I think it could be the door handle, I mean that's the only thing around there unless he got something which mounts on the window/ where the seal it?

get an external mic and wire it through the window inside the car

google "gorilla tripod", i'm not 100% sure he used one.. But I know I have used mine on my car before and it came out pretty similar
