Not sure why they printed that last part of the note - that was meant for KoA not you guys :P I also asked them to put extra oil ;) Just kidding...or am I? Sucks that you had to pay an import tax/fees. Very cool looking blade though, crude but heavy duty. Almost reminds me of a modern take on a xiphos or something. Can't wait to see it in action! -Chip
X Infinity hah yeah I know - just saying the blade shape reminds me of a xiphos. As I understand it, the design was first implemented in 1897 during the Philippine insurrection - nasty stuff. The US likely copied the traditional Philippine bolo and militarized it. Makes for an effective jungle blade, I want to see how well it can baton wood
nishi ran oh yeah, shipping was quite expensive going from the KoA warehouse in IL to Skall in BC, Canada. Worth it though, glad to contribute something new to the collection :)
FoardenotFord maybe it would have been cheaper if you had received it in Boston and then submitted it to Skall as a gift. At least where I live it'd have 90% chance of not getting charged and even then Skall could go after them and say "I didn't buy this. I didn't ask someone to buy this. Hell, I didn't even know it was coming!". It'd add up as shipping, but there would be no taxes over the product cost.
That would be cheating, rooting me to one spot severely limits my ability to talk with my arms and legs, and how are you supposed to understand me otherwise ;p
It's an American fighting knife made at the end of WWI. Most of these didn't actually get delivers to Europe before the war ended, but a lot were issued during WWII, especially in the Pacific. Marines used a lot of whacky looking knives, as there wasn't a surplus of new made fighting knives and bayonets. Initially, since there were so few knives, a lot of guys brought hunting knives from home. I've got a couple good examples of this. The military actually bought up lots of hunting knives from outdoors companies. Then of course there's all the theatre made examples. Just too broad of a topic to ever fully cover, especially in a RUclips comment.
It's an U. S. Army Bolo knife for both military and civilian use. Introduced to the army in 1917, the one you got there was manufactured in 1918. Quite an interesting piece of metal, and also one with history
It's not an oil, it's Petroleum jelly. Generally it is used to protect from corrosion, same function as an oil. Petroleum jelly is more viscous, thus resembles some kind of oily wax. Useless fact #278. You're welcome
I just want to say that you two ROCK! I found a single video of yours researching swords for a upcoming video game project, and now find myself tumbling down the rabbit hole of history, learning so many incredible things, and actually get inspired to get more work done just by popping on a skall vid and immersing myself in a different time-period. Pay no mind to the edgelord trolls, they seek only the attention the you two have painstakingly forged by being passionate, forthright, intelligent, articulate human beings who have worked very hard to get where you are today. Looking forward to hearing more about the interesting knife gift!
The knife looks interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action. Also, I've gotta say that both you and Cara are looking quite good. Whatever you're doing to be fit and healthy I commend you both. I'm still working on it myself.
Model 1917 Bolo. US-issue in the latter part of WW1, but manufactured in large enough numbers that limited numbers were still in use by US forces in WW2
Similar, but not quite. It's a 1917 Army Bolo, the first standard-issue commando knife in the US military. It's based off the bolo, the classic weapon of the Gauchos in Argentina and Bolivia and has rounded edges that won't break but a stoutness that lends to hacking and can keep a good edge, not unlike a leuku from Finland or a penang from Malaysia. Great blade.
It is a replica of a US Army bolo knife, made between 1897 til 1918, but used by the US though WWII. The US military was still a frontier style military, so they needed weapons and tools with a more survival slant too them. The bolo was designed as kind of for hatchet use, and it could also be used for digging. This replica seems rather well detailed to what it was back during that time, including the semi-finger groves.
Always find that kind of design for a knife blade quite fascinating, the forward curve should increase both chop and draw-cut performance, but it also have a straight leafe point good for trusting, just slightly off centered.
My grandpa brought home a bolo from WW2. Handed down through the years, I finally got my hands on it. Apparently, it was a weapon that was used in WW1 but was re-issued in WW2. It featured a blade with a chisel grind (one large bevel on one side and a small to no bevel on the other).
for remobing oil or grease use break cleaner. dont know if its good for knives but brake discs get cleaned by it spotless and the cleaner should disintegrate 100% without leaving remains
Have to agree ordered from windlass. A triedge stiletto. I'd have it cleaned put back in the sheath and if I let it sit say a week or two it be oiled again lol
Its a replica of a WW1/2 bolo it was IIRC issued to hospital corps, and the Corp of Engineers. Primarily a a brush cutter and utility blade, was not intended as a weapon but I guess if it was what you had it would do.
It is a copy of the 1910/ 1918 US Bolo knife. These were used by artillery, machine gun crews and the hospital corps. They were also used in WW 2. The handle on the originals are like your copy. They are based on the 1903 Springfield bayonet.
Cool. My grandpa was in WWII at Guadalcanal and gave my father his side pistol, a .38 Colt short-action, semi-auto used by Navy personnel on his deathbed and now dad plans on giving it to me upon his passing. Too bad neither had any cool knives. :)
I agree with the other comments, Cara is looking different, and I think it's just that she's gotten in better shape. Which is dope, I hope both of you can reach whatever fitness goals you guys have.
Not burlap. Cotton webbing material as made by MEC = Mills Equipment Company - produced a wide variety of webbing equipment for military organizations around the world spanning several decades.
looks almost like one of those spade knives soldiers used back in ww1 or 2, can't remember which.. they adopted a spade shaped blade for faster and more silent kills and could be used as a trenching tool in a pinch..
That's a really interesting blade shape. Given I haven't held it and looked closely, I might have missed a few things, but it almost looks like a kopis/falcata-leaf blade middle ground. Only smaller of course. But it really does look like someone said, "you know, that kopis is just too unwieldy, but let's retain some of it."
In the pacific theatre during WWII, the US military was short of jungle machetes, so surplus cavalry sabres were cut down and repurposed... perhaps one of these was later cut down further to a bolo. This would partly explain the US 1918 markings.
Man it's from 1918, if they knew about unscrewable pommels the wars wouldn't have lasted that long. U.S. barely discovered the power of pommels by the end of WWII and covered it up with "atomic bomb" so that other countries wouldn't copy them.
MonkeyEngineer It has 4 unscrewable counterweights: The two big screwheads and the two even bigger handle scales. Each can be used as an unscrewable pommel! Now enough with that outdated joke.
Wow, Cara seriously lost weight and is getting fit (she was rather cute when bigger, though)!!! Also, notice just as you're going for the 90's boy band look, she's doing the first season Ragnar one with her hair. Kult of Athena does do some seriously awesome and badass weaponry including the neat Gaucho knife they sent you. All around cool. :)
The shape looks like the end third of a sword you reviewed a while ago (i don't remember the name, it was strait at first but the last third was "bent" forward)
yeah made in india. I had ordered a knife thaat was produced in india too, i had to let it dry for a while, there was so much oil on (and in) it that i could fill half a cup with it.
Make a video on how skilled were European knights!!! and maybe a couple examples of a training or thing people did to be able to move that well in a full armor suit and swing a sword!!
Completely unrelated to the video, but I like the choker necklace thingamadoober that Cara has on in this video. It's pretty cool looking! :D ...And I guess the Knife is also pretty neat. *Cough Cough*
Is there a way for us, the sender, to pay that tax thing? Instead of Skall paying for it. I never knew Canada had a tax for receiving packages outside off Canada.
1917 Army Bolo, based on the classic Gaucho knife from Argentina and mass-produced for "bush units" or commandos in WWI as a perfect machete and all-purpose blade while being easy to sharpen and doesn't require much upkeep. Coupled with a Colt .45 1911 semi-auto and about 60 rounds in the form of 10 spare clips on the belt you have along with a good flashlight and light fatigues the perfect "tunnel rat" set.
I'd actually considered sending you a seax a while back. I was about to ask for your address to send it to, but I decided to get an estimate on the price of shipping first so I entered a random address in Victoria, saw the shipping was more than the weapon and promptly backed out of it. The stupid thing is you're so close I could load the box in a catapult and land it in front of your house, but I can't send a knife at a reasonable price.
You both look very healthy! Congratulations, your hard work is showing Skall!
Not sure why they printed that last part of the note - that was meant for KoA not you guys :P I also asked them to put extra oil ;)
Just kidding...or am I?
Sucks that you had to pay an import tax/fees. Very cool looking blade though, crude but heavy duty. Almost reminds me of a modern take on a xiphos or something. Can't wait to see it in action!

you're a nice guy chip Thumbs up!
and a question if i may'
did they charge you taxes also ?
00
nishi ran oh yeah, shipping was quite expensive going from the KoA warehouse in IL to Skall in BC, Canada. Worth it though, glad to contribute something new to the collection :)
FoardenotFord taxes man I tell ya
They are the real crooks :(

Be a good husband and buy Cara a little box to stand on.
That would be cheating, rooting me to one spot severely limits my ability to talk with my arms and legs, and how are you supposed to understand me otherwise ;p

Konstantin K. it's a reproduction
She has been working out.Look awesome girl!
Thank you! I appreciate the encouragement, I've been on medical leave the last month so I'm going a bit stir crazy wanting to get back :)
Knife looks cool, Skall is awesome, Cara is awesome, channel is awesome. All that needs to be said.
Thanks. :)
MagusX 84
Agreed, agreed, agreed, agreed and totally agreed.
Skallagrim I think it's a spaxchit or something like that. A all in one ax knifey entrench tool.
Dat look when Cara pulled the knife out. XD
Lol 1:58 minutes into swords and chill and he gives you that look
I haven't seen any of your vids in at least a year or two. You both got in great shape since! Congratz.
It's not an oil, it's Petroleum jelly. Generally it is used to protect from corrosion, same function as an oil. Petroleum jelly is more viscous, thus resembles some kind of oily wax.
Useless fact #278.
You're welcome
vaseline
You guys are hair goals

I'm happy to see you both looking better and better by the day.
2:40 her look when he pulls it out
sorry ...
not sorry
I prefer 1:57
true love :D
I love your unboxings first thing. Not over the top.
On an aside, you guys are styling.
It's a "smatchet", I remember first reading about it in William S. Fairbain's "get tough" combat manual for the British troops in WW2
It`s almost, but not quite a smatchet.
Model 1917 Bolo. US-issue in the latter part of WW1, but manufactured in large enough numbers that limited numbers were still in use by US forces in WW2

With the utmost respect: she's so cute! Love the t-shirt, the hair, the braid, the collar thingy...

This looks like it could serve as a practical working tool for certain tasks. Can't wait for a test and review.

I'm excited to see the results of the tests. I've had my eye on that knife for a while.
Have to agree ordered from windlass. A triedge stiletto. I'd have it cleaned put back in the sheath and if I let it sit say a week or two it be oiled again lol
I just got a Browning redwood 364 knife and I'm really pleased with the quality
Hey, Mr. Skallagrim! I just wanted to say that you both seem much trimmer than the last time I saw you, lovely to see.
Its a replica of a WW1/2 bolo it was IIRC issued to hospital corps, and the Corp of Engineers. Primarily a a brush cutter and utility blade, was not intended as a weapon but I guess if it was what you had it would do.
Holy! Cara's arms looks so strong!
Squats
Skall, hard work is showing. Same for Cara.
...man I've not commented on your videos in years. Felt congratulations were in order though
Thanks!
you guys look great! whatever you're doing, it's working.
It is a copy of the 1910/ 1918 US Bolo knife. These were used by artillery, machine gun crews and the hospital corps. They were also used in WW 2. The handle on the originals are like your copy. They are based on the 1903 Springfield bayonet.
oh shit my great grandpa had one of those for WW1. My grandpa gave it to me.
Cool. My grandpa was in WWII at Guadalcanal and gave my father his side pistol, a .38 Colt short-action, semi-auto used by Navy personnel on his deathbed and now dad plans on giving it to me upon his passing. Too bad neither had any cool knives. :)
You two are adorable.
Come on, UNBOX IT RIGHTLY ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ
Opening it with a pommel?
Anurabis you fool!!! unboxing with the pommel would disrupt the space time continuum!!....
X Infinity how would you intend to unpack something with itself?
_"X Infinity how would you intend to unpack something with itself?"_
RIGHTLY
Is there a pommel letter opener?
I agree with the other comments, Cara is looking different, and I think it's just that she's gotten in better shape. Which is dope, I hope both of you can reach whatever fitness goals you guys have.
Not burlap. Cotton webbing material as made by MEC = Mills Equipment Company - produced a wide variety of webbing equipment for military organizations around the world spanning several decades.
You guys are my inspiration!
looks almost like one of those spade knives soldiers used back in ww1 or 2, can't remember which.. they adopted a spade shaped blade for faster and more silent kills and could be used as a trenching tool in a pinch..
Looks like Royal Welch Fusiliers knife from ww1, or something similar, trench knife/work knife.
i have seen a knife similar to this one before, it was a Navy copsman's knife. this knife was used to amputate the limbs of U.S and Allayed forces.
As usual, Cara looks pretty awesome. I quite like their hair, and that is a cool shirt they have on.
Really love Caras hair. Looks really good in a tail like that. Not a huge fan about the green colour but that is just a personal preference.
Reminds me of the WW2 Smatchet, but the blade shape is slightly off.
Cara is looking damn fine as well x
In the pacific theatre during WWII, the US military was short of jungle machetes, so surplus cavalry sabres were cut down and repurposed... perhaps one of these was later cut down further to a bolo. This would partly explain the US 1918 markings.
the brown paper is for oil remove purposes perhaps?
Kara is looking fiiiiine! She has been working out for sure.
I'm not shure that was oil, maybe chip got too excited when he was wrapping the sword
Giant butter knife of DOOOOOOOM! :P
Cara I love your shirt!
Aaaaaaand cutest couple of the year goes to....
You both look really good!
but can you unscrew the pommel?!?!?!?! thats the real question
MonkeyEngineer dead meme
never!!!!!
Man it's from 1918, if they knew about unscrewable pommels the wars wouldn't have lasted that long. U.S. barely discovered the power of pommels by the end of WWII and covered it up with "atomic bomb" so that other countries wouldn't copy them.
Julian Lawrie it will only die when skall ends it rightly!
MonkeyEngineer It has 4 unscrewable counterweights: The two big screwheads and the two even bigger handle scales. Each can be used as an unscrewable pommel! Now enough with that outdated joke.
This looks like a knife suitable for forest / jungle survival kit. Old design I must say.
you both look amazing and healthy!
Always good to see Cara.
I now want to see Cara's tattoo. Wonder if Skall has one too or not.
He does, on his left arm, you can spot it in some of the first person videos
Never noticed before. Thank you.
The shape looks like the end third of a sword you reviewed a while ago (i don't remember the name, it was strait at first but the last third was "bent" forward)
I wish I was going out with the kind of girl that carries a knife down the front of her shirt :(
crazy with sharp implements doubly worse
Yeah, it's called a felony, lol.
LambentTyto What felony? Where applicable, conceal carry permits exist.
Have you ever thought about getting materials/equipment and making your own knives or swords? That would be something I would enjoy watching.
The only Windlass blade I have came with rust spots on it, so personally I would have excepted it being better oiled...
yeah made in india. I had ordered a knife thaat was produced in india too, i had to let it dry for a while, there was so much oil on (and in) it that i could fill half a cup with it.
That first blade reminds me of how the spartans swords were with how thick the meat of the blade is.
I own an original 1917 from the Springfield Armory, love it.
Once I get better with my spot welder I'd like to send you a square foot of welded, mild steel chainmail. Yes, I'm in Canada ;)
Make a video on how skilled were European knights!!! and maybe a couple examples of a training or thing people did to be able to move that well in a full armor suit and swing a sword!!
col. farbrian covers them in his books. they where used by allied troops From WWI to WWII
damn, your woman got in shape! Ohhhhh, Foxy lady.... good job. Both of you actually. Good job guys. Have a nice day.
The first thought I had was, "It looks like a smatchet."
Skall and Cara...you both are such a cute Couple :D
Love these unboxing Videos with you two in it, always cheers me up^^
"Who says that I'm harmless" WIFEY MATERIAL.
I miss my ex who wasn't into medieval stuff per se, but was into modern bow hunting
1:55 me if i was a girl
Jim Geerts would be a great way to bring a knife everywhere
he knows he has an amazing girl
@Skallagrim.. just smuggle the packages :). They send it to somewhere in US border closest to you, you cross the border with the package in the trunk
Looks like the partial edge on the back side is hollow ground, unlike the rest of the blade...
I think it's complimentary to a gift when two history nerds get lost in discussion and forget the camera is even there!
I don't always participate in guitar duals. But when I do I make sure to unscrew the bottom strap button and end my opponent rightly.
Skall and Cara are so adorable together, that I ship them like a an anime fangirl! ^_^'
You guys rock!
Why ship people who are already married? :)
Skallagrim oh, You know! cute moments between couples don't stop when people get married. :D
You should make a video on the chances of Daenerys army against Lannister army, the dothraki vs knights etc.
Haven't seen her for awhile. she seems well
It looks a lot like a Cold Steel Smatchet. Which is based on a WW1 design.
Someone really needs to send him a box full of pommels.
Its like a smatchet with a mauser bayonet handle and an old g.i. style belt attachment
Cara is looking fantastic!
Ugh, that blade looks like you could cut a few potatoes with it and you got everything you need for some french fries - oil included. :-P
caras arm are growing. you looks so good! (I womder how slim you are right now) keep it up.and you to grim:D
Plumb used to make axes as well.
Skal's look when Cara pulls out her knife :P
If we sneak into Canada and use one of their post offices, does that still work?
2:25 and the following seconds are glorious! XD
Oh how I now want to see a review of Rambo V Crocodile Dundee knives... that'd be sick af.
Looks like a beefed up bayonet. Like an American WW2 era bayonet had a baby with Bowie knife
Just a fyi, if you declare the item as a gift the Canada post won't tax it.
Completely unrelated to the video, but I like the choker necklace thingamadoober that Cara has on in this video.
It's pretty cool looking! :D
...And I guess the Knife is also pretty neat. *Cough Cough*
Is there a way for us, the sender, to pay that tax thing? Instead of Skall paying for it. I never knew Canada had a tax for receiving packages outside off Canada.
Every country has import tax for international shipments. I know that businesses can pre-pay the fees, but not sure if individuals can.
It looks kinda like it's a combination leaf blade and bowie-knife shape.
skall, that bolo knife was made famous by the Harlem helfighters, a full black American unit during WW1.
That knife might be a flat grind for right handers.
