I've ran an evolve 50m for larger crowds than one would think they would work, it does a great job. For high SPL and coverage in larger rooms, it doesn't cut it. But for most normal sized bars and restaurants, it's perfect. and these have bigger drivers and woofers, and twice the power. and they're rated for a lot more SPL, so I can't see why I wouldn't try them with 500. Though I use bigger tops and sides for my gigs. I've seen people do full shows outside with great volume with turbo sound ip3000s. They sounded great, covered South Bend well, and are a column array.

For the sake of argument, if so many people are already happy with their Evolve 50 systems, i don't see how they couldn't appreciate the upgrade. Seems like these new Evolves are such a polarizing issue. If people buy them prematurely without demo-ing them first or seeing other reviews of pros who have really tested them in the field, then that's on them. Worse case scenario they can just re-sell them and get another system. Chill out people!! 😅

You're absolutely right, 1000%!!! That was the first thing that stood out to me when they reviewed the tech specs….no true 3-way speaker setup. It’s a huge oversight for a new product release, especially when trying to compete with other brands. I own the LD Maui 28 G2, and they’re hands down some of the best-sounding, clearest speakers I’ve ever heard in a column setup. The fact that they’re 3-way with dedicated tweeter horns makes all the difference. Great video, Nick!

Not an issue at all. If the speakers can handle mid frequency range just fine, they will handle all inputs just fine (until you start pushing them).
The real issue is the amount of people they "handle" - the hell they do.
Running 2x 18" subs with 129SPL and 132SPL accordingly - this is barely enough for 100 people and it is missing the real sound pressure.
Will probably expand with a few dual 18" subs and 4 more tops to start building a nice wall. 25kW is what I call handling 500 people where you can really feel the bass rattling your bones.

My guy, Nick. I feel your conviction on the fact that the EV system can't handle what it promises, I do. However, the point that you're trying to attack these speakers on doesn't really back your argument. Can 3-way speakers sound better than 2-way? Sure! But there are PLENTY of 2-way speakers that sound better than 3 -way variants. If you want to go down the sound quality rabbit hold with these, then do that. The point of these speakers is to be loud, not have pristine sound quality.
If I were to attack these speakers would be based on how they sound at high volume levels. If I had to guess, most column array speakers suffer from a degradation of sound quality at high volume levels. Now, one speaker may be able to hold their own at a higher db than another brand, but it's going to be negligible if these type of speakers are used within their intended environment. I would guess small to medium sized weddings at best. Whereas larger crowds like school dances, large collage parties, or huge weddings would NOT be the intended application for these speakers. It all comes down to physics, these speakers cannot move enough air and have large enough drivers to keep up with higher volumes without distorting or leaving some frequencies behind. That's where tradition 12" or 15" tops and dedicated subs come in. Not only that, but you will need to project sound at a higher point in order to hit everyone's ears, which you cannot really do with column array speakers.
What I would really like to see is a shootout between some of these column array speakers, maybe throw in a 12" or 15" traditional top paired with a sub as well.

Many DJ’s finesse the volume when they talk. This guy walks around announcing while ANOTHER DJ controls and plays his tunes. That’s his style, it works for him, that’s his method of doing weddings. One-man show DJs are at the decks pulling the volume up and down as they announce / MC so there’s no cut-through vocals to worry about. 3-way speakers typically sound great, especially as it pertains to clarity but if the Evolve 50s were good, these HAVE TO BE better. If you’re a small band with vocalists, the 2-way Evolves are likely NOT the best solution.
That being said, the Evolve 70s still seem like an absolute winner. Not too big, not too heavy, and noticeably louder (by 6dB) than the workhorse Evolve 50s.

I think you’re correct 80% and a little off. First of all I’m always a point source top over 2 15” sub guy. Have been since the mid 90’s. However most of my parties I could easily handle with column arrays however I’ve never bought them. I think it would greatly benefit me to buy a set and pair it with a small setup like the prime go for a 10 minutes setup. For small shit. However. I’m a turntable. Rev 7 guy and the setup time pain far outweighs the convenience aspect. As far as the columns. I heard a dj the other day use a colum array at a senior night basketball gym and the whole gym thumped. I was impressed. And it wasn’t 12” subs. I think the room dimensions and acoustics is the part you’re missing. I’ve played rooms with 200 people but the ceilings were 80 feet high and sounded like ass. I’ve Dj’d clubs with double that in a small room with low ceilings in a rectangular room and a smaller setup sounded much better. It’s all about the acoustics. The quality of the speakers, the delay like you mentioned last video and it helps if the dj and mc is good. I think the evolve 90’s can handle and perform great in a room with 500 people. Assuming half or less are on the dancefloor and the other half sitting or at the bar. Which is usually the case until the last 30 mins of the wedding party etc.
just my 2 cents. I’m an RCF top and bottom guy. No homo. Just sayin. I’m willing to expand.

So, you might not understand the line array theory, but it not being 3-way doesn't mean anything until you hear it. 6 or more identical drivers sharing a baffle (or coupled baffles) work to create farther and wider HF dispersion. In fact, 8 small drivers paired up like this might be better at the LONG THROW for the HF than adding a driver and horn for the HF.
The '# of people' is always a guess - what material is the floor, the walls, are the people standing or sitting, there are too many variables.
Chances are, these new EV's will be great - They sounded good at the NAMM demo room, I was there. (of course, that's an 'ideal' setup) - but you may need to look into the actual working theories and known science involved with developing PA products before you just speculate that it won't be as good as another option just because that one is a 3-way system and one is not.

You can use audio ducking or "Talkover" and completely bypass the whole issue you are arguing about; 2 way vs 3 way and clipping your speakers while making announcements and playing music at the same time. The feature is built into many DJ controllers. You should also be using EQ on your microphone channels to mitigate this as well. So your basically arguing that anyone using a 2 way system (Any 2 way tops, Evolves, Evox, Maui 5, Bose L1, and a ton of other all in one column arrays) to DJ is a moron because of this single issue you have. You have not even heard these speakers in person and are arguing something that you can only speculate. I have a set of Evolves and use them mainly as singles for ceremonies and cocktail hour speakers and they sound great, are light and portable, and sip power when running them off of inverters. I do like the sound of 2 way tops over subs better and whenever I can utilize that I do. We were recently in my audio suppliers warehouse testing out the Maui 44 G2 and when compared to the Evolve 50 and Evox 12 with out changing any settings we all thought they sounded louder but were muddy and didn't sound as clear or pleasant to the ears. After applying some EQ they brightened up a little. For smaller events/venues I will use a set of the Evolve 50, medium I use a set of EV EKX 15p over subs, large I use a set of RCF NXW 44-a over RCF 8004as subs, Extra large I rent a decent line array system from my local audio company. There are so many variables that justify when and how an audio system can be used to cover a specified amount of people. I just don't feel like your argument has much traction when there are easy workarounds for your main complaint.

    Hey Nick,
I want to start off by saying I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot. However from a science perspective and I have a reference to it, your argumentation of comparing a 2-way system to a 3 way system is in my opinion incorrect.
Each speaker, transducer has a frequency response to it, I remember about 10 years ago Shure brought out a single driver in ear system that could produce more than any 4 way in ear system. Now I know speakers are different than earphones, because the main thing is the throw that’s what matters here and that’s what I think your whole argument should be. You are right about it not being able to handle 500 people and likely over promising, but it has nothing to do with being a 2 way system, rather its missing a high frequency driver and a horn that throws the clarity around, futhermore a 12 ot 15 also throws the mids further (thats basic science) compared to those 3/4 inch drivers this uses.
You dont know the internal crossover points or amplification for that matter or the way the dsp is setup.
Your conclusion is correct, but your argumentation is not.
Frequency response, coverage patterns along with peak spl are what differentiates speakers

Nick, I use 10 different top cabinets. Four are 3-way and six are 2-way. All are horns, not piezoelectric, lol. I prefer 3-way as the clarity is better, cuts through more with MC work, and even brings our musical parts cleaner & clearer such as guitar. The 2-way usually end up being used for the wedding ceremony and or Dinner music. But dance is always 3-way.

As a singer the idea you can’t sing using at line array speaker system is utter nonsense. I have used all types of systems. The EV 50s can handle 200 people. I have no doubt a pair of ev70s can handle 300-500 people. Finding some random say 1000 to legitimise your argument is setting a false premise. These are aimed at 250-500 audiences and are lighter, better looking, cheaper, louder than ALL the competition. I have no doubt I will be buying the evolve 70.

We have a tone of EV speakers ETX. EKX, ELX etc... But regarding Column array speakers Ev never was an option. RCF is killing with the NXL series because they are versatile. You can build the system as your needs. Even you can us the tops in stand alone mode for a speech for example. For AV companies RCF its a much better option.

Had db Technologies ES1203 for several years. Fantastic. 132db. The real downfall of most of these brands' systems is not that they don't have a HF horn, it's that they don't have an adjustable speaker pole. Ya gotta get the tops above the crowd for them to throw. But yeah, if you're mixing a heavy metal band, you do need a HF driver.

Honesty+ as always Nick 😂😂👍👍Guess what system I bought a month a go :-) EV took too long to deliver so I did some research on the Maui's - Having speakers already from both brands I do love the Evolves for anything up to around 100 pax or medium sized venue with 10 banquet tables - any bigger than that the 50's will struggle instead I'd usually bring in some extra 15 tops +18" Subs. The Maui 44's sound epic and crystal clear with the 3-way setup and the ingenious castor design that protects the sub controls while in transit was also a key feature that made me hand over a significant amount of dough. Any company that puts that much care into their design is worth investing in IMHO. Good work Bro ;-)

I know they are designed differently (Spread of coverage/angles, types of drivers, etc.) Outside of that, i've always said these systems are not the same as Tops(point source) & Subs. These systems are equivalent to Just Tops. outside of the angle and area of coverage. Yes, as far as sound it is similar to a Two-way top, where the low end driver was set on the floor and the mid&highs are high, which is more efficient for bass. But the SPL numbers are still the same or less than your average 12" top. Watts only tells you how much electricity is using, SPL tells you how loud it is. i do think the form factor on all these types of speakers is very cool, however they have their place, they are not a generic solution for ALL events. If I ever decide to buy a set, im partial to the RCF one just because it is the Only system that has an adjustable stand to fly them higher if needed. with these fixed units it is hard to setup for the same. I always saw these as a perfect companion to a live musician at a small venue, not a club speaker. Great idea for cocktail hour, small corporate gigs, private home parties. I would not depend on these for All receptions or events. Im sure you can use these for far more event types than what I mentioned, however they need to be matched to the right type of event.

  • @VitoProduction
    @VitoProduction 5 дней назад

The point you're making has nothing todo with 3-way vs 2-way speakers. If you're going to generalize it like that, MOST 2-way speakers do sound better than 3-way speakers because 3-way speakers need more complex cross over design and face more challenges with time alignment, when done right yes 3-ways will "SOUND" better but doesn't mean it's "LOUDER".
What I believe you're referring to is that the EV Evolve's are not horn-driven speakers which doesn't allow it to project as far as your typical QSC K12. To your credit, yes you're not going to want to use the Evolve outside or in a very large hall if you're audience is going to be furtur away or you have a lot of reflections (a gym). For indoor weddings, bars, most corporate events etc the Evolve 70 & 90 is still a good option because you want higher SPL in the dance floor without projecting back to far and the sound reinforcement you're going to get from that subwoofer.
Your inability to talk over the music is probably because you're not leaving enough headroom on your mixer or the speaker cannot go loud enough to give you the headroom you need. The Evolve 70 can output the SAME SPL as an RCF 935A. Think about the RCF 935-A you have and I've seen you use, even tho it's a 2-way it still has a lot of DSP correction to time align the horn with the bass driver even tho they are almost perfectly aligned, it's so important that they branded it has "FiRPHASE DSP" now throw an extra speaker in there then you have 3x that work.
The bottom line, only if you need to regularly project sound far should you have second thoughts about upgrading to the Evolve 70, 90. Otherwise it's not that black and white.

  • @MrKnightfx

I vehemently disagree with your opinion. I have heard a 4 piece band with vocals through the EV EVOLVE 50M rig at a outdoor venue, and they sounded amazeballs. My wife and I heard a Jazz quartet through a EV Evolve 50M rig at another smaller outdoor venue the same day and it still killed. Every sound system will have various limitations. Too small. Too big. Too heavy, Too quiet. Too loud.... etc...etc. Whatever. Some folks like the tower style system for the esthetics, and ease of set up. The drawbacks don't affect them because their chosen system serves THEIR purpose. I actually agree with you that a 3 way point source system will achieve better fidelity. The real rub is your opinion doesn't carry very much weight because you have not heard these new Evolve 70 and 90 speakers yet.

I do agree most djs who don’t work in live sound or know about live sound don’t really understand how speakers work. But to say these speakers won’t be good just because they are not 3 way. Is kinda unfair with out hearing them.. also sound is subjective to everyone. Also stating that some speaker can handle 200 or 500 people 😢isn’t correct.. it really depends on the size of the room and the dance floor your tryna cover.. i would still give these speakers a chance and listen to it before I let someone else tell me what the speakers is capable of doing. 3 way is great but more importantly the size of the tweeters and horns is even more important. Also the material of the box is important also. IMO

I would never purchase a PA based solely off of specs. You have a very good point about 2 way vs. 3 way but even with those specs in mind I still would want to hear the system first for myself. I would want to hear it with different genres of music and with someone talking over it on the mic to see how well it handles the vocals. I personally use the RCF Evox 12’s and although it’s a 2 way system I am very satisfied with the SPL and overall quality. I believe that alot of it also has to do with the amp module. But anyway this PA is ideal for small weddings and corporate shows. I would never put it on a large show with an audience over 200 people! For school events and concerts I’m brining out my dynacord cobra system. I would never ever put a small column array on these types of events and risk disappointing my customers! I’d rather charge more money and bring out big sound than be lazy and do things half ass.

The EV's crush any other brand for musicality for live music applications. If you are DJing, I guess you dont need as much nuance' in the drivers as music is compressed/mastered etc so its going to fit into other boxes like RCF, Bose etc.
But for live signals that needs a really musical response Ill take the EV's any day. You could do a 4 piece band and the vocals wont get lost in the mix, especially with the 70s and 90s.

One thing people need to know with a big horn loaded speaker like RCF art 932 there's no way you're going to get that loud column array systems don't throw far . Now the QSC KC looks very interesting because it's a horn loaded speaker. But I'll always choose a 2 way speaker with sub combo over a column array system. Those column arrays are meant to throw sound wide rather then distance.

The other thing with any of these column arrays, if it fails you loose a top AND sub. With split tops and subs, if you have a failure, while still bad, it's no quite SO bad. And being able to do subs on sends is a real advantage, and I don’t believe you can do that with any column array. And a third thing...with these columns, your subs are ALWAYS split, which is usually the WORST way to deploy subs. At least with split subs and tops, you have the option to cluster or boundary load the subs when it's feasible. I'm not often able to do that, but OMG, when you can...and they're on aux sends...wow...just wow...

This is a perfect example of why you should listen to speakers before giving an opinion lol. If you think the nxl14 is a cocktail speaker, you shouldn't be giving an opinion on speakers at all lol

This is common with Ev products. They are outdated with their technology and the new stuff they come up with is comparable to their old stuff, I have videos in my channel comparing ETX 15 to the RCF 945. Now I know they are in different leagues but what obvious is that EV limits too fast. Still some indoctrinated people comment saying that I didn’t take the ETX to +10 amplification, which it’s ridiculous cause they are limiting at way less than that. The manufacturer says to step back when the limit hits the solid signal, but these people still fight you saying the comparison is unfair because the ETX can go all the way to +10. Hahahhahahahahahahahhah. Incredible

I have one question. Have you heard these speakers yet?

No. I haven’t. Just like every other influencer claiming these speakers are amazing. Instead of telling everyone to buy them, I’m motivating people to do their research.
