As a firm lover of strip planking, wood and multihulls I so resonate with you stories and feeling... I have a 46 Roger Simpson designed strip planked cat...
I love your design and craftsmanship, she's a work of art... thank you for sharing what you have and looking forward...
    All the best, always...

I faffed away most of the afternoon trying to work out how ended up with the rudder 4mm thinner than I planned and how I’m going to build them back up. Those rabbit hole consumes so much time. Enjoying the series, keep it coming.

Thanks for the video - good stuff about faffing around. I built my cedar cat and a friends foam tri of the same length (11.6 metres). We mostly used 0-90 biaxial for the foam tri and I used double bias +-45 outide and uni inside my cedar cat. The 0 degree glass orientation of the biaxial (0-90) is made redundant by the long grain strength of the cedar core. That is also another reason why cedar boats have lighter laminates than foam boats - foam doesn't take any global loads. We actually beaded and coved the foam after the foam we bought was too stiff to conform to the mould in sheet form but didn't bead and cove the cedar - just straight edge planks.

Thanks for the info above, sounds like 2 different and interesting builds. And nice to have a contrast of materials to compare different cores. We decided to go for the balanced laminate of biax inside and out, although a uni inside skin was a debate that we had at the time :)

Great video. Great logic explaining which materials were chosen. You should be so proud whenever you board the boat from the dinghy.

    Simply Grand Lawrence!
Thanks for your honest and direct comments (felt them fitting a bit too well on me) regarding the construction and design "Rabbit Holes" you are right on the money, literally and figuratively on this one. I've built only new steel commercial ocean tugs (with crews and other's money) , but I've rebuilt every boat I've owned (me and my money...rip out, redesign, and rebuild) and I can identify a bit with your efforts.
Cheers for a good job, done well, and in grand form,
    Marty

Useful and inspiring. Thank you for all the detail Lawrence. I am still working on plans and models, but it will happen when we recover from the Covid debacle, which almost destroyed our business. I have a timber factory in China, so when I finally start it will be quite quick to build if I plan well. I will put half a dozen blokes on it full time. At this stage, getting the design right and the building techniques all worked out are a good use of time.

Sorry to hear about your business, and hope that the recovery is well on the way. Preparation is everything and you're definitely making best use of time - planning is never wasted. Models are a great resource - we made expensive use of models for WH. Best of luck with the project :)

Great videos! I'm working on a much smaller project myself, a 15" bluewater capable boat, yes I know ;-)
Would love to see some more details on the track you made for the engine if possible.

Sounds like an interesting project! We're hoping to highlight more of the smaller carbon features soon, like blocks and the cars we made for the mast and engine tracks - so keep a look out :)

Amazing journey it must've been! And still is. I see some modern parallels with the Ran sailing channel, currently building his woodencore boat.
    Looking forward to more videos!

Laurence, your videos are fascinating for me. I am the proud owner of a very similar catamaran called Cloud 9. She is one of the very earliest Dazcats...in fact the very first Cruising cat built by Darren Newton. She is also strip plank cedar laminated withh 600 g glass inside and out. Not sure what expoxy was used. Originally C9 was 35 ft. When i bought her she was extended to 39 ft. The hull shape is very similar to WH. The coach roof is also very similar with side windows similar shape. Did you ever keep track of the hours it took you to build WH? I still have the 1994 paperwork for C9s original build....12000 manhours! The refurb and stern extensions took another 4000 hrs in 2002.
The structure of C9 is as good today as it was when it was built 30 years ago. WH is a youngster...she will outlast us all. As you pointed out in your video cedar core does show "print through" after a while but this is easily faired out if it bothers you.
I am a great fan of cedar core construction. It enables curved hull shapes which provide very strong hull forms for relatively light weight.
Very interested in how you built your rotating mast. Having been a hobycat sailor i can imagine your mast must provide a lot of power.

Hi Chris, I'm so glad that you're enjoying owning Cloud 9 - what a great boat, I remember her well! In fact, Emma and I attended her launch :) I think I even made some canvas doors for her interior.
I've known Daz since the beginning, and he's a great guy. Wild Honey is often mistaken for a Dazcat.
I always think all boats are the result of cross-pollination, so WH has a nod to Roger Hatfield at Gold Coast Yachts, Peter Wormwood and Adrian Thompson. And obviously Phil Morrison, who designed her in 1991! So she's not that much of a youngster :)
But obviously with the man hours involved, quite a few boats leapfrogged her into the water, while we were toiling away in our polytunnel.
Our rig is pretty interesting, and we're hoping to do a video on it in the spring :)

@@SailingWildHoney I still have canvass doors! I had new ones in 2002... function over form...they are simply "fit for purpose". I spent a lot of time with Darren and his team in the yard when we refurbished C9. I have done work on most parts of the boat so I know it very well but I dont have your boat building skills. I even have most of the paper line drawings used in the construction. You must have known the original owners John and Eileen Marshall both no longer with us sadly. Never understood why they sold C9..not sure they understood just how good the boat is but they did a lot of miles in her commuting across the Atlantic. They bought a Dean 400 with the most extreme rake on the mast I have ever seen.
Really looking forward to your mast video. I doubt whether many people really appreciate just how much work you put into WildHoney! You have created a "BfL" .... "Boat for Life"....not many of those around.
I believe Derek Reynolds was the designer for C9...cant remember meeting him. Have been to a few of Darrens parties so we may have met at some point.

I’d like to build a similar craft one day, especially with the use of cedar strip planking. I’m curious about your design in regard to the key stress points between the hulls and the cross beams/pod section. I’m currently building a Wharram tiki 21 as my first project.

That sounds like a nice little project! And thanks for the comment - we have foam composite beams, bonded to foam bulkheads with staggered laminates to distribute the load into the hull skins :)

Did you log how you spent your time? How many hundreds or thousands of hours were spent on each stage e.g. planning, woodwork, laminating etc etc.
would you be faster if you were to start again or is that just the time it takes?

    • @SailingWildHoney
      @SailingWildHoney  6 месяцев назад +1

Oh crikey! Great question. We did log time for a while but it was a bit disheartening at times so it pettered out. We were also working to support ourselves, and juggling all the ups and downs of life. If we were to do it again, it would definitely be quicker because we have learnt so much and have much clearer ideas about how to go about it. Also, for a lot of the initial build, there wasn't really any internet to provide resources and inspiration :)
