I think Tim made a good decision casting Johnny and since burton was known for his twisted and weird imagination and Johnny was known as a teen Star at the time so he was so casting him was a bit odd for some filmmakers but not burton

During a flash back you see a large factory machine the inventor built, and in one section there’s a conveyor belt with a metal human-shaped figure with scissors for hands (used to cut whatever came by on the conveyor belt). It’s implied that one of these “metal humans” was used to create Edward.
