Hey! Im one of the founders sons (not the one that sold the gamecube, his younger son by four years lol, so i dont remember the cat bite 😂) and my dad says he loves both of your Pickles videos
I think my favorite bit of my dads past though is when he made a port of an old game called Kwik Snax and got permission from the company to publish it, and since this was such an early era of videogames, they didnt really care what you did. So my godfather (who also worked with my dad for art) made the credits scene have a little cartoon doodle of both of them. You can actually still find it online, its pretty funny.
Oh! And there was a "beta" conceptual version of Pickles that wasnt called Pickles and didnt have monkeys but instead had weird geometric dudes. You be able to find some videos of it downloaded onto some old ds things that had a ton of random test footage downloaded on it, ask my brother about it! (I dont currently have good contact with my brother but I will soon)
Also I love the "A" nickname for my brother im gonna start calling him that lol
I love uncovering lost media videos and the cutting room floor community so suddenly having something from my childhood at the center of it is really funny
My Uncle works at Nintendo and he said that they almost went through with green-lighting Pickles but they must've forgot to call back.

Also idk if it was entirely a greenlight situation but id have to ask him. I just dont think they ever finished anything before having to cancel due to money issues

This was probably the best person to have gotten their hands on this game. Not only tons of gameplay and information was shown, but now the game has been sent away for a backup, I really hope for the best with this game and channel!

@@hipkiddo1252 what? For real? Wow...i didnt knew the Copy was Lost but the prototype version was found. I do Hope the original programers Who made the game had still the game intacted. At least the source code. Would be nice if they allow share them.

It's sad that there are so many collectors just want to keep these unreleased games for themselves. I would just do like this guy and share it to the world while still keeping the real rare physical copy on the shelf. It doesn't ruin the special uniqueness and rarity for me to share the data so long you still have the original physical thing as well as making you famous for finding and sharing long lost media rather than just stayed forever hidden dusting inside your storage.
Munster is probably pronounced "mun-ster", like the old black and white TV show. Dude probably looked like the Frankenstein character. I've heard my dad call people Munsters before when they looked large and ogre-like.
I feel a Pickles revival simmering somewhere in someone’s mind~! If the internet is good for anything, it’s reviving lost media made by good people!

Thank you for covering this further! This is awesome! I dunno how this didn’t click with developers. This idea for gameplay is really unique even if it’s not fleshed out entirely due to it not being a finished game. The new levels you got to work actually look like they have better video quality output than level 1 from your first video. Nice!

Something about old cancelled games like Kirby GCN and Pickles are so cool seeing how much potential they had but we're cancelled for unknown reasons or had no funding or didn't have enough time to publish said game for the console it was made for from how the Wii released. Old game prototypes and betas and demos are always so amazing and sad seeing what we could've got but didn't.

Found the first video on a random RUclips recommendation, these other levels look more polished (yet still buggy/unfinished, of course) than your first video, and this game looks like it would have been fun as hell if it had ever seen the light of day. Glad it's been dumped for others to enjoy.

I'm curious about what all was planned for this game. I could imagine some rather interesting multiplayer modes for it. It seems like having 1 player control the movement while another controls the riding monkeys (kinda like Mario Kart Double Dash) would've been neat. I kinda wish we could find one of the more complete builds.
Oh and on the subject of rare Gamecube stuff, I did notice your copy of Pokemon Box. Impressive!
It would be amazing if an indie dev used this game for inspiration. A spiritual remake of a game that never was.

Unironically id be interested in working on that myself. Taking on the mantle and reviving one of my dads games would be hilarious. Ive thought about it before, even before I saw how much people loved Pickles lol

Because I would be interested in working on such project as a programmer and level designer, if you aren't too good on the technical aspects of the gamedev. I have made (sadly on permanent hiatus) a 3d platformer in the past so I know how to do it.
It may be possible to get the code from the NR disc using the NR reader which should show the other levels (if they are on there)

It sounds so strange that they couldn't find a publisher as I'm very sure it would easily been picked up by some Japanese publisher consider there's so many much more absurd and obscured games releasing in Japan.
Heck, it could even be a real hit in the west too as the premise and execution wasn't really that absurd or risky for a western audience as I'm very sure many kids would absolutely love this hilarious game about stacking monkeys with different abilities on a unicycle. Maybe almost all publisher was already busy with so many other games and didn't really have the time and space for adding one more game for their schedule at the time.

People love to complain about working on license projects, but to me it is a good way to find ways to work things out while having to a keep to strict criteria. But talk about a money passion project I will jump on board.
Make sure those Gameboy prototype stickers are properly adhered or risk flashing it
It was simply a much funner time back then, it’s a shame to think that what was could never be again. It’s at least aspiring to hear that some of the original developers who used to work at Santa Cruz used their time from then to inspire future indie projects of theirs. It’s at least good to hear that they’ve all been doing well, I’m glad that you thought of sending it to Hard4Games as when he used to be involved with Forest of Illusion he helped the purchase of another game that could’ve been, Dinosaur Planet with the iconic Rare charm most familiar on the N64. I hope that just like it, the community can do what it can to complete development for the game Pickles.
Idk much about nr discs, but surely you can use a disc resurfacer to try and fix the issues on the disc?

This game is obviously a passionate project and had potentially, but it might have had a really tough time trying to compete with other games of the time because the stacking mechanics is very limiting.

I think the idea was to fling the monkeys on your tower at the Boss (big elephant , or clown). the way you fling them is using the ramp mechanic to make the tower lean then release them as it leans forward.
That elephant is right out of diddy Kong racing!

How did you find these levels? Was it just constant completing level 1 as last video you couldn’t get further
I’d constantly turn off and on the system and try booting a new level. 99% resulting in a crash 😂

Level 3 seems to be a scrapped boss fight
I think I recognize a couple of sound effects from Jazz Jackrabbit 2. Perhaps same sfx library or those sounds were used as placeholders?
I think the idea in level 4 to unlock the little elephant is to stack the monkeys high enough to ring that bell, but clearly the bell is unfinished.
THE music from the first level played in this video is from super Mario sunshine hotel delfino
there is also a second world on the iso and old versions of world 1 that seem to have more data than the current version.

If there was a Pickles remaster, I like the idea of it being about Pickles chasing after the antagonists for cancelling their game.
Be like when Rare was making Conker, to set it differently from other kids games they turned it into an adult game. Give Pickles a different edge.
