Now what would be cool is if TaylorMade still had some of its original golf clubs they could send you and you see the evolution of TaylorMade drives so you’re not comparing it to other brands.
I’m 49 years old. First driver was the big Bertha warbird. 29 years later I’m hitting the ball just as far. About 280 carry with a Taylor made M1. What could’ve been if I had these clubs when I was younger
Yes there has been big changes since the persimmon days. But we were still looking for little gains then too. My last persimmon driver I competed with, had a graphite shaft, and a carbon fiber face insert. That was high tech for 1992. LOL Great driver. I still have it. ;) My evolution of metal woods I competed with after that was, Callaway GBB, then into Titleist 983e and then into Titleist TS3. The ball has made a lot of changes over those years too. You definitely had to hit the driver more precise back then. You didn't get away with anything. It's almost like cheating now,... you can dial in a driver with the hosel, ...and the drivers are so forgiving and hot faced. LOL They are way more user friendly and easy to find something that works for you. We would have to root thru barrels of drivers and look for one that looked good and felt good with the waggle.. and then you went and hit balls with it for a few weeks to see if it was a keeper. LOL What a change since those days LOL
Thats because old drivers have tons of spin with just a little miss of center. Its way harder to hit it perfect everytime. Its the reason why im all for making driverheads smaller. The pros are not penalised for off center hits with those big heads. Go watch the older master tournaments here on youtube and watch how they work their drivers.
I just turned 50 and when I started playing I was around 10 (1982). I started out playing with persimmon and you’re right it was about that time that Taylor made came out with the “metal wood” lol. I had that Cobra driver and I think that’s the driver Tiger played in the late 90’s. I’ve never heard of those drivers between the Cobra and the Diablo. Those were impressive numbers with the persimmon but now go find a ball from that era and do it lol. The changes made in the golf ball have has as much impact on distance as driver technology.
So in the past 15 years (Diablo driver), there’s really a minuscule change. Especially considering none of those shafts were fit to you. Basically, you can pick any driver off the shelf from the past 5-10 years and expect very similar results. Fortunately for companies, golfers are dumb. And every year so many buy into the longer, straighter, better hype. Rinse and repeat every season. Yet never seem to get any better.
70 yard difference and add another 30 at least for the ball improvements. I was a long hitter and tour caddie in the early 70’s and 250 was an enormous drive.
Very cool vid. Yonex and Cobra made great drivers in the 90s. You should consider doing a vid where you try different ball types from the past 30-40 years. Example: Wound balata ball, wound surlyn cover, 2 piece - 1 layer like the Spalding Tour Edition, Pro V1 thru the modern golf ball.
so close to 500k !!! LETS GO MICAH , i been here for a long time with you brother. congrats my man - keep grinding and ignore the idiot haters #hoosierboys
I started playing golf 40 years ago so I've seen how clubs have evolved and even seen some of the clubs you hit. To be frank, most of those clubs were "bargain bin" clubs that most didn't play. Ping was one of the last companies to make a persimmon driver. My dad used to play that in the mid 80s. Wilson, Big Bertha, Ping and Taylormade were the real big dogs when it came to many of those older clubs. One of my favorites from the early 2000s was the original Taylormade Burner Driver. It would be really cool to see how far you hit one of those. In my late 20's I used to hit that 310 routinely using Wilson Staff golf balls.
@@richardbicker640 thanks for the clarification. I was 13 years old back then and didn't know much about club construction. But they were still made of wood with a metal base screwed to the bottom.
I watched Greg Norman hitting persimmon drivers back in the late 70's in Australia, he was hitting them 300 - 320 yards consistently. No kidding it was a sight to see!!!! He truly is the best ever with a driver in his hands. Which is why he was number one for so long.
That wooden driver is not persimmon. It is a laminated maple driver. You can see the layers that were glued together. The persimmon heads were more expensive and had better "feel" at impact. I know...I was there! Also, try hitting the balata wound rubber band ball with that driver...it goes nowhere. I made a video on my channel using both (I still have all my clubs from the early 1970's including the Wilson Staff blade) showing this. Did you know Wilson Staff irons have won more majors that any other brand? Because back then almost everybody had them. It takes a lot more skill to hit that old stuff well and straight than todays equipment. I'm an old Geezer now still playing (.05) index and I enjoy watching your golf journey! Ignore the negativity...
You’re built for driver content. Good stuff. If you were able to pair the golf ball used at the time each of those clubs was released, you would see even greater variances in the technology. No doubt the club tech is better (especially shaft). But THE BALL is a massive difference.
Micah, one of the biggest issues you faced with this driver comparison is that you hit mostly way off brand drivers. I grew up in the 50s, 60s and 70s and started playing golf around 1965. I played a laminated wood driver and could consistently drive the ball between 275-280 carry and 295-300 total. You used a Northwestern Driver, which was about as cheap a club you could find back then. Same goes through the years. Try again using comparable tour level clubs and you’ll see a more true comparison.
Interesting that you seemed to drive it really well and consistently with the first wood driver. You gave us a lot of yards, but your dispersion wasn't huge
Cool video👍 subtract 20+ yards and add 2000 more rpm with that laminated head if the correct era ball was used. Also looked like it had a non period shaft. BTW, Great content the last few weeks.
Would love to see numbers with a Balata ball. This shows that the powers to be are looking in the wrong spot to control distance on tour. Simple solution, persimmon woods and blade irons.
Jack Nicklaus had a 270 yard average in 1980 when he was 40. He was estimated to have somewhere between 275 and 280 in the mid 60s. His longest recorded drive in a PGA event was 341 yards in 1963 when he was in a long drive contest. It would be very interesting what he would do with todays technology. You probably should have hit a TM 320 TI and an original Bubble Burner Driver to compare the mid to late 90s to stuff from later on.
@@masterofdisaster9194 probably. Golf balls were very different back then. It would be interesting seeing Micah hit a persimmon driver with an old MacGregor or Spalding golf ball from the period.
@@masterofdisaster9194 I don’t think he would even have much of an issue doing so. Late 60’s through early 70’s his swing was as athletic & dynamic as anyone in the game today..
So I really enjoyed your workout session and just to be honest I don’t so much care for this type of video with older technology.. I would love to see a workout video based on how well you golf that day.. for instance you are going to do a circuit of pushups/hammer/jump rope 10-10 each side-50 double unders or 100 singles for 5 rounds… each bogey is a weight added to the vest.. each birdie is one taken out… I think that would be awesome content
That wood driver was a Northwestern brand club. Not persimmon. Laminated maple likely. Northwestern was sold out of big box stores like Canadian Tire up here in Canada. in the 70s 80s. You should find a real good persimmon driver... that Northwestern, would be like a Walmart box set driver as far as quality goes. Nicklaus played MacGregor that would be a good place to start looking. Get something with a steel shaft too, for full effect.
Yonex ADX would have been late 80s early 90s. TOUR Select was that other one.. that was like a discount golf shop bargain brand. Not great quality either. LOL that Ti Innovation one got qook'd after that one was the Tour Edge Diablo... about 15 years old. that was the first of the lot that has the hot face. I think all the others before that were all old dead face era clubs.
would like to see comparisons with the top drivers in those eras....before hot face rule... and then some more post hot face rule... with the balata and early prov1 and callaway red and blue.. matching balls from the same era as the clubs. pre - Callaway GBB... Titleist 975j post..TaylorMade R7 ... Titleist 983E and some proper persimmon woods with balata balls.
499k so close, Let’s go bro! Loving this series, happy to see you open up about your frustrations and your new perspective on golf/competing. Keep it coming brotha! God bless!
Steelwork when not golfing. No need for a gym cause all the tools are heavy, material is heavy, all the muscles get worked daily. Outside and making things. Best job in the world 👍
TiMatrix is junk.. I think he paid about $75 for those all those clubs with the Cobra Ti being about $20 & Diablo $40.. surprised he didn't cave the face in more of them. Being on TaylorMade staff, you'd think he could've gotten a Pittsburgh persimmon, System 2, Burner bubble, Firesole, 300 series, 580, R7, Rocketballz.. interesting video nonetheless
Hitting a bunch of no name drivers from the past vs a current Taylor Made fitted specifically for you doesn't really say much. If you test Taylor Made drivers in your specs from the last 10 years I'm guessing there wouldn't be too much difference. Still enjoy watching you swing for the fences tho!
Now what would be cool is if TaylorMade still had some of its original golf clubs they could send you and you see the evolution of TaylorMade drives so you’re not comparing it to other brands.
