We all knew middle eastern and Egyptian music were gonna be bangers but alot of times people forget that india's a part of Asia too and forget to represent their cultural influences into their animes and games, therefore stopping people from getting a taste of our nation's music. Not always do I give mihoyo a W but they've earned one for bringing out our culture and its music globally for people to see. Maybe now we'll start seeing more anime and games being inspired from our nation now too instead of just being overridden with high medieval, Japanese and Chinese fantasy. Good job yu peng Chen

    I really like this one. I think those "synthesized" sounds are very computer-y kinds of tones meant to invoke the idea of information or data. Sumeru is the nation of "wisdom"--of knowledge, information, and memory. But it reflects those concepts both in human ways (academic learning, almost sci-fi information systems, etc.) and in nature (the patterns in nature, the memories of the forest, etc.) Without getting into story spoilers this boss has themes of "evolution" and "adaptation", and you can see from the trailer it has various helix motifs in it's attacks and the corkscrew-seed elements in the boss design--very literally the information embedded in nature. To me this song is very much about the clash and dance between the knowledge of man and the knowledge of the natural world and whether they can find common ground...

    fun fact: this whole theme was originally a battle theme from the chasm that was scrapped. you can still find the old beta version on youtube. for apep, they remixed it with a more sumeru flavour.
    it does make it a little bit sad that this theme wasn't actually made for apep, but it's also a good thing because it means this great theme they composed but never got to use hasn't gone to waste.

    • @NijiKonohana

      Well, we don't know if it was actually scrapped in the first place. The original beta version had Sumeru elements as well (before Sumeru was even released lol), which was why people were speculating that it was a Sumeru soundtrack, and not for the Chasm. So there's a chance that this theme was meant for an earlier concept of Apep, and we now get to hear it in its full glory ;D

    • @Pascll
      @Pascll Год назад

      @@NijiKonohana it didn't have any sumeru elements. it was a very standard western orchestra sound with more piano than usual, which is the chasm's usual style: mostly western orchestra with extra piano. sumeru sounds completely different from that, it has more of a south asian and middle eastern sound. the unused track has nothing in common with sumeru music at all.
      the music also just has the same vibe as other chasm music.
      there's also the fact that the unused track is 4 minutes long: much longer than boss themes in genshin. it's also both phases combined into one track, which kindoff shows tbh with how short apep's second phase theme is. it's probably the shortest battle theme in the game, being 1 minute. boss themes are usually 2 to 3 minutes.

    • @NijiKonohana
      @NijiKonohana Год назад +1

      @@Pascll Oh when I said 'Sumeru elements', I wasn't talking about the instruments. The original beta version was using the usual Western orchestra, but the climax part of the song (around the 3:00 point onwards) had chord progression and tempo that is more closely associated with Arabic-style music. That was why there were already theories that it might eventually be a Sumeru theme back when the song was first leaked in 2.6.
      But again though, these are all just theories. We won't know unless someone from Hoyo-Mix comes out and confirms it lol.
      I won't comment on the length of the piece... There's no hard rule for it in Genshin. There are some environmental pieces that range from 5 mins to under 2 minutes too, so it honestly just comes down to how long Hoyo-Mix wants the song to last.

    • @Pascll
      @Pascll Год назад

      @@NijiKonohana environmental music has a much bigger length range, they can be long or short. but battle and boss music does have much more of a limited range to how long or short it can be. battle themes are all around 3 and a half to 5 minutes, boss themes are all around 2 to 3 minutes.
      environmental music has a different purpose from boss or battle music, so it has a different length range to suit that purpose. battle themes have a more specific range to their length because if they're too short, they could end up looping too many times, which isn't an issue that environmental music has, so it can be as short as it wants, as environmental music doesn't loop.
      the unused theme is much longer than any boss theme but it the right length for a battle theme, while apep phase 3 is much shorter than any boss or battle theme, so it'll loop pretty quickly if you don't finish off the boss quick.
      it's also important to note that the unused theme isn't cut up in multiple phases, it's one continuous theme. this is why I think it's unlikely that this was always meant to be two phases.

    I absolutely LOVE this theme. It's one of my favourite battle themes in the game.
    The main reason why is because the instrumentation, melodies and general movements to me show me a couple of things:
    1) The use of the bassoon (and rest of the woodwinds) gives a very... well, 'woody' sound, which obviously represents the fact it's the *Dendro* dragon, the Sovereign of Wisdom and
    Rainforests. It sounds *ancient* and *mysterious,* which should be the case since she survived for all this time after the Primordial One defeated the Dragons TWICE.
    2) you can hear the stages of Apep while fighting the Guardian inside her (because remember, we are INSIDE Apep during the fight).
    First the more lethargic section gives us the image of the current corrupted state of Apep, like an old withered tree standing in the storm, trying its hardest not to crumble and collapse.
    The next section is Apep's Guardian's inner struggle of fighting that corruption while simultaneously fighting the Traveler, who Apep and the Guardian both see as an invader/pest/enemy.
    Then finally, the corruption has been dispelled and the grandiose, divine, noble and royal aspects of Apep and the inner Guardian are heard, notifying that Apep is fully in control again, the Guardian is fully healed and everything functions as intended again. The Dendro Dragon Sovereign is back, and she is conscious of that.

She is a playful and curious personality but has a lot of doubt in her responsibilities and power because of the events of the main story. The music sounds adjacently similar to the Horntail theme in MapleStory. The similarities are subtle (the chromatic build-up, the digitised background, etc.), but it has the reminiscence. I'm not sure if this is intentional, but considering how you can draw some parallels between Sumeru and the desert that was once a forest together with Leafre and the Minar Forest, it could very well be, as with some other Genshin OSTs that sounds undeniably nostalgic, but you just can't really wrap your finger around where you've heard the leitmotifs from. I do like the fact that what Hoyo's trying to do with Genshin is a celebration of different cultures as well as games and anime, considering that their mission of "Tech Otakus Save the World", and that also reflects in music as well.

    I agree that this feels more like our theme while fighting against Apep. This theme feels like an epic of a hero's journey. Heroic af

    am I the only one that hears Alhaitham's demo music throughout the end of the song? (the part he calls "our theme" at 10:55). It sounds just like it if it's not the same, which is super interesting after you mentioned the Egyptian demon Apep being a foe of the sun god. There have been theories about Alhaitham being associated with King Deshret, as maybe some sort of reincarnation or distant relative, and King Deshret is often associated with or symbolized by the sun.... hmmm...

      I do hear it too! I would have commented on it had it not found your comment on it, I wanted to make sure no one had brought it up already. However, while the Alhaitham and King Deshret thing has been said left and right, there are many direct contradictions in recent patches that take away Alhaitham from him-Ashikai mentioned this during one of her latest videos on 3.5's Archon Quest. Alhaitham has no Sun symbology, in fact he is much closest to the Moon and the night, and in Egyptian mythology that translates to the god of knowledge, wisdom and patron of the scribes, Thoth, represented as a man with an ibis head-the ibis is a bird with a curved long beak that resembles a crescent and so he is also god of the Moon that substitutes Ra while he is in the underworld fighting evil spirits and Apopis/Apep. Incidentally, one of King Deshret's Three Magi/counselors was the Ibis King, referred to in-game as 'the scribe of scribes', who advised Deshret against going through the Eternal Dream hive mind project.
      (Spoilers for Alhaitham's Story Quest and Nahida's 2nd Story Quest!)
      It happens that is exactly what Alhaitham's Story Quest is about stopping Siraj from creating a hive mind, something that a year prior Alhaitham had advised against. And Nahida's second story quest features the elementals being some sort of collective hivemind as the Hydro-Fungus-Elemental carries them as the story progresses, amusingly enough prompting /evolution/ in the process-reminder that Siraj in Alhaitham's Story Quest proposed the hivemind as a form of human evolution, and amusingly enough as well, when later bickering with Kaveh, Alhaitham snarks: "What about you? Are you going to devolve into a Fungus?" Which is very eyebrow-rising considering Nahida's 2nd Story Quest and the concept of a hivemind collective that achieves evolution by sharing knowledge and emotions but retaining a sense of self, unlike Siraj's hivemind reducing the subjects to Siraj Number X. I believe Alhaitham's connection with King Deshret stops at the Ibis King being one of his advisors, and that the hint of his theme represents the hivemind, the shared knowledge, memories and language-all terms Nahida mentions as the elementals perform their sacrifice, and I would point at Alhaitham being the Scribe-recorder of history which is made by these three elements-and language, brought up a number of times in Nahida's quest, being Alhaitham's degree as a Haravatat graduate. Also, Nahida using the allegory of an 'eagle' got an eyebrow raise from be because, well, that is what Alhaitham's name means and it is also his constellation (Vultur Volans is another name for Aquila, the Eagle). Do I believe it might tie in with King Deshret?, maybe, taking the Ibis King as reference. Do I believe it is about Alhaitham being/representing Deshret?, no, because the game contradicts this in many ways. Do I believe Alhaitham plays a role much bigger than people imagine in the deeper lore/concepts of not just Sumeru but also Teyvat?, absolutely. /bites wall at the shattered mirror in 3.5 and Alhaitham's mirror motif
