The outlay would generate interest for customers along with perhaps a learning opportunity. Is durian no longer available in Chinatown in NYC? I remember the place on Elizabeth St was not so bad. But I imagine this is much better......mmmmm.....
Around 15 years ago I left a durian in a garbage bin at a recording studio in Dumbo. The building was evacuated and the firefighters were called to hack down the door of the studio thinking it was an oil leak. I saw one of your mango videos and I just want to say you have to try Sindhri mangoes, ''Chaunsa' mangoes, and Anwar Ratol mangoes
The 'Sindhri' mango is a mango cultivar grown in Sindhri, a town in Sindh, and other areas of Sindh province in Pakistan. It is a large oval shaped mango which is extremely sweet and aromatic.[1]
It is considered the Queen of Mangoes because of its taste.
'Chaunsa' mango (Urdu: چونسا ; Hindi: चौंसा), also known as 'Chausa the King of Mangoes'.
The fruit has a golden-yellow color when it is soft, is almost fiberless, and has an aromatic, pleasant, sweet flavor. Commonly available varieties in Pakistan are greenish-yellow. The unique taste and richness in its flavor makes it a worldwide favorite. Some consider it the best mango in terms of its rich aroma, sweet taste, juicy pulp and high nutritional value.
Anwar Ratol (sometimes spelt Anwar Rataul) is a small, yellow variety of mango known for its sweetness. It is sometimes called the 'mini powerhouse'. It is cultivated in the Punjab and Sindh regions of Pakistan, and near the village of Rataul in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is very sweet in taste with less fiber.[1]
There are two variations of this mango:

The early season variety is fragile and prone to the climate elements. Much of the crop is destroyed by strong wind and heavy rain, but it is also the most popular and sweeter of the two varieties. Its growing season is very short - just a few weeks in May and June.
You have to get them early in season though.

Ha! She must be a very brave kitty. Never tried durian, but if I have juiced a lime to put in a recipe, my cat will jump away from my hands like the cats in the video. You'd think I beat her the way she jumps back. 🙀

It is cheaper than getting on a plane for sure but can you justify spending 70-100+ dollars on a fruit I am not sure. Maybe some day I will have that kind of money to try one.

They now carry durian at my local Kroger's in Ohio. Anyone have any advice on how to select one, as they are very expensive? What signs do I look for to pick a good one?

as much as ive heard of durian, i still have yet to try it. im not afraid of how it might taste, and ive had my fair share of smelly foods, but rather its the texture. some say its like cream and the texture of canned pears; others say it is like eating wads of hair covered in custard because of the stringy and soft flesh. what is it really like? what might you equate it to in an appetizing way?

    • @chuutoriel8767
      @chuutoriel8767 3 года назад

Nearer to the pit it can get a little stringy/fibrous, but it's still pretty soft and creamy throughout, a lot like custard. If you want pick every bit of fruit off the seed, you'll need to chew on the fiber surrounding it, but it's really not at all tough, and rather melts in your mouth pretty easily. I've had stringier fruit.
"Wads of hair" is a little overblown, IMO, but then again I love durian and don't really have sensory processing issues. We eat it frozen so that it kind of resembles ice cream.
If the stringiness is going to be an issue for you, I think Durian ice cream would be a great alternative to the actual fruit. Not sure if that's being sold in your area, but the recipes I've seen of it online do involve straining the fruit to get rid of the fiber

At what temperature are you consuming these fruits? You said they're frozen, but they look thawed. Are they cold, room-temp, warm? Seems like temperature would affect taste.

Durian looks rather delicious as a fruit but knowing fruits it may as well not taste any good (to me personally of course). I've not tasted that many in general though
