    I think the message is how young people tend to think that they are going to be young forever and that they can be reckless all the time but with their irresponsible ongoing behavior they are taking away their older version’s time 😢 its so well done. the last 20 mins were pure comedy but the message stands strong

      The message is so incredibly obvious and hamfisted, yet at the same time done in a really, really nonsensical manner. Literally why would Elizabeth ever continue the procedure past the first time her finger went old? She has no memory of what Sue does, she experiences 0 pleasure from it all.

    I'm so glad The Substance meant the rebirth of the career of Demi and her performance impressed me as much as her co-star Margaret Qualley and about the movie, it's about self-accepting and constant fighting yourself when you refuse to get old especially, if you're a Hollywood celebrity and have to follow beauty standards-

    Moral of the story- be thankful of your age and enjoy life. Yarning for youth and beauty will lose golden time of your life and you will be left with ugly monster.

    • @Axehilt
      @Axehilt 3 месяца назад +4

      While that's literally what happens, as a moral is nonsense right? Metaphorically or literally: _nobody yearning for youth loses their life or becomes a monster._ I think only in the loosest sense are there any parallels at all to real life (ie the story might've involved an older adult acting progressively more and more like a child in their pursuit of youth, and _that's_ the reason things go bad. (You know, things like they revert to their older self, but they show up to their job late which they never did before, and so things get worse and worse because they keep making the types of bad choices younger people make.)
      A better (but ridiculously vague) moral would be, _"be careful of shady deals,"_ or more specifically, _"be sure a deal doesn't cost you more than you gain."_ Those are morals worth spreading (and the story does loosely support it).

    5:12 a small detail I really like is how much care Sue had for her other counterpart in the beginning. Towel under her head and brushing her hair behind her ear. I’d say it goes to show how the innocent youth are crushed and twisted by the bitter old and end up just as twisted as them. Pair that with later in the movie where Elizabeth drags Sue’s body, Sue’s head repeatedly banged against the stairs. Just a nice detail I noticed and liked

      Yes, that's the point. She thougt she would benefit, as she was told by the 'company' in the begginning that it's only one person, so she though she will enjoy the life of Sue, but that didn't happen. But the phone continued to repeat the 'no you and she, just one' like a mantra to keep her baited. When she tried to end it, that was when she realized that there is indeed two people, but she didn't want to take away Sue's chance.

      She DID benefit. The new being created with Margaret Qualley‘s face WAS her as well. The moment she was born, there was Margaret Qualley, an iteration enjoying a new body, and Demi Moore, another iteration left behind. At some point Qualley begins acting hostile towards Moore so it seems like they are different people, but I think that’s the point of the movie, that it is not two separate beings but self-hatred. A young version of the mind becoming hateful towards the inevitable old aged existence, which only leads to self-destruction
