  • 4G leadership - can we expect a more level playing field? Is the system fair? Is it transparent? Is the government running out of ideas? Will the new prime minister have the full backing of his team? Will he become party secretary-general before the election?
Veteran journalist Bertha Henson in a no-holds barred interview with IQ Chief Editor and former NMP Viswa Sadasivan.

    Weird line of questioning.
The questioner would ask questions like what changes you like to see and at the same time qualify that the people in the status quo are already so fantastic always acting with good intentions. I mean if that was the case, why bother to seek change?
For example, the questioner suggested that people from the outside should come in but they may not be well tested as scholars. I mean, why the hell do you want untested people to come into the system? Or why are scholars so well tested. If they are so well tested why look for outsiders?
I guess what this interview show is Singaporeans themselves don't know why they want change but at the same time mouthing they want change.

He ends the interview by psychologically steering the viewers to his direction, i.e., to his stance that the viewers should also trust his summative conclusion to support a candidate they do not know at all as opposed to the position that Bertha stated, namely we know more that the current PM is more of the same as he was an administrative service officer who reported to his former boss.

It seems like very rigid, and are not helpful in answering problems. After all still need customer services officer assistant to answer the call. It take up a lot of unnecessary times and it is not improving but backwards in services. Certainly things digital can't give you answers to enquiry left more doubts and frustrated. SG does not belong to anyone person's grandfather. The supreme law of the land gives voters the power to change leaders if they deem it's needed. It's human nature those benefitting a lot to not want change. It's also natural that those who disapprove several policies and seeing no signs of change possible to want to send a signal to the establishment. You need to change the SG Constitution to remove this power and then you can sleep in peace. Ban elections and you can have no change. Or migrate to China and enjoy dictatorship under one party. Don't be selfish. If the 40% wants change that's their legal rights. 40% deserves a proportional representation in parliament seats which is Not the Case Now.
Next time you not happy with the 40%, don't tell them to leave SG. Tell them to Vote Them Out! Understand? Don't fool them to leave SG and leave SG with only anti-diversity-of-views people. We don't need bigots in sg

There ws recognition during the discussion that the private sector should not merely follow the government and but act show leadership and work together rather than merely let the Government lead the private sector follow. Instead of following up on the idea of the team, and how it can be implemwnted and what the advantages are, the discussion moved on to persons who are 'successful' in the private sector joining the government. This bnefits the Government because it has people with a different experie ce in theiir midst but what happens to the leadershio that we want to see in the r=private sector? The idea of the private sector and the Government got a mention with hardly any follow up.

No big idea in Singapore is because increasingly, there is nothing much Singapore can actually offer. Cities and countries can catch up to Singapore - slowly, but surely. We have some manufacturing but not major enough to make waves in the world. We have no farming or agriculture. We just have people.
How much do you expect people can produce or innovate if it is just people as a resource? It will be easy to replicate.
We talk about innovation, wanting to change, but what is there for us to change when we are not producers of anything much?
Will the world demand of our services or products? Who will when there are better and more varied alternatives elsewhere?
I am not trying to be optimistic, but singapore better be on its toes and the people better be careful cos come few elections down the road and the world becomes more and more different, we may very well lose out position and placing in this world.

Good observation and point...already there is a feeling that S'poreans are becoming too proud and complacent and turning into "a little island with smug people". Pride comes before a fall. Of course many countries would love to be in S'pore's position but there is a problem with high cost which is affecting not just individuals but businesses as well. On the micro level, ncreasingly I see S'poreans being priced out of the good "middle income" life that many aspire too, esp the older generation like myself. I can't speak for the younger generation but among my contemporaries and peers, many have expressed the view that it's better for us to move away as the island state is becoming more and more expensive and not conducive for retirement.

Affordable rental from HDB is a second priority

Leasehold property means once time is up, the lease will revert back to the landowner. What you are suggesting is a perpetual leasehold ie equivalent to a freehold property. You pay peanuts and you expect to stay in a freehold property in land scarce Singapore? There are 2 types of HDB rental right now. Rental by HDB or by owner. Rental by HDB is already very affordable. Are you suggesting government to intervene for rental by owner too?

    • @leolee1959
      @leolee1959 3 месяца назад

One of the reasons why Sg $ has such high exchange rates vis-a-vis neighbouring nations; is due to the value of Singapore's real estate. Their corporations - large and small have no faith in their currencies. They and MANY global corporations 'parked' their capital in Singapore-domiciled banks.
This made Singapore the No. 2 Direct Foreign Investment destination by US $ valuation. No. 1 is USA because only she can print US $.
Think about that. It isn't China or Japan or Germany. How much US $ is remitted to their respective state-domiciled banks due to their economic output ? Yet Singapore is miles ahead of No. 3, China. Why ?
It is almost a certainty; many of these Letters of Credit are directly paid into the respective corporations banks accounts domiciled in a bank located inside Singapore's jurisdiction.
There must be a mind-boggling sum of $$$$$$$$$$ being remitted daily to banks located in Singapore. I can safely guess most of the motivation stems from Tax Planning or Tax Evasion for a truer meaning; especially for US Corporations. I can also guess many of these corporations accept payments in Sg $$$$$$ to avoid scrutiny by US Federal Reserve or Authorities.
The impact of so much Sg $ being 'internationalise" must be mind-boggling. But it has a huge benefit for a small economy; the currency attracts high demand. Or literally speaking, our monetary authority can write Sg $1 M paper or digital cheques and there would be a queue of folks lined up to buy.
For a nation that has to import ALL its commodities to feed, clothe and house citizens, this translate into buying other folks materials & output; at a cheap price. This reduces the cost of tiles for an MRT project or your home renovation.
This sort of gives one an idea why Prime Minister Mahathir was so cheesed-off at the price Singapore paid for Malaysian water - when converted to Sg $$$$$. He would be much less cheesed-off if 3 Malaysian sens is = 9 Singapore cents. Then he can crowed every morning what a bunch of ass-holes economists - are doing over in Singapore. In conclusion - the insinuation is - Mahathir IS the ass-hole.
If the TOTAL real estate values in Singapore is pathetically under-valued, overseas folks would have MUCH LESS confidence in our $$$$; because some of those liquid cash are certainly being converted into real estate holdings to earn capital returns ( there's no capital-gains tax - if you're savvy enough ).
As a HDB owner, you buy 2 or maybe 3 units in your life time; but you need to eat everyday. Just compare the price of a plate of fried Hokkien Mee in Singapore and in Johore Bahru. It probably cost 10 Malaysian Ringgit and 5 Singapore Dollars. Unit for unit comparison, it costs twice as much to eat take-out food in Johore. Dont forget, an Malaysian employee do not earn twice - in unit terms - the monthly salary of his equivalent job-holder in Singapore.
This subject - HDB pricing - is something not easily understood by common folks who struggle daily under a salary only to see foreigners living in up-scale condos, driving flashy cars and dining in expensive restaurants. Citizens of Zurich (Switzerland), Honolulu (Hawaii), Monte Carlo (France) lived with the same problem - ie; Envy.
"money" parks there; citizens KNOW it and the worse effect is - they DON'T get to spend any of it.
You can always get a 2nd job - as a citizen there are no restrictions. Many foreign employment-pass holders wished they could but Sg laws forbid it. There is plenty of reasonably well-paid occupations on a part-time job basis.
PLENTY of other cities would loved the position enjoyed by this city-state Singapore. There is no dispute over this.
We just have to work our asses off - there's no choice on this subject.

I find this confusing, on one hand you find the policies of processing is confusing (which I do agree) on the hand you cannot see the big idea from the new team. Not all policies introduced are going to work on the ground even with the best intentions but it still needs to be tested and you never know if this is going to be the next big idea. The next big idea comes from little ones formulating with changes in between. I do agree with Bertha about the selection of the presidential candidate. There are just too many “qualifications” before a candidate can qualify. I think the way Iswaran and specially TCJ cases were could be better handled and I think LHL realized this. Honestly, how many in the private sector is willing to forgo that fat paying jobs and open themselves to public scrutiny. How many of these Tan See Lengs are prepared to just dive into this. So that leaves you with only the talent in the public sector. Remember how the Keppel executive was thrown out of PAP after word got around he was not the most favourite guy to work with in SAF, in the intro of the new faces? Anyway this is a new political era in which public scrutiny with all the social media attention is more intense. The 4G generation and particularly PM LW (my school mate in HBS) need to galvanize his team and show us how he’s going lead us. I too dunno him but give him and his team a chance to demonstrate their worth and judge after that….continuity is not a bad thing given you’re so new.
