    Look how happy they were to qualify, how much it genuinely meant to them. I feel a lot of that sincerity is lost in today's football.

    • @jamesmason8436
      @jamesmason8436 5 месяцев назад

      Context: they'd failed to qualify for WC '94, hadn't had to qualify at all for Euro '96 and were in a very tough WC qualifying group which went down to the last game: this one.
      England players were equally delirious when they qualified in the last game, with the last kick, for WC 2002. Beckham free kick and all that.

      Venables drew as many games as he won. Qualified automatically for Euro 96. Won 2 games in normal time at Euro 96. Not better than Hoddle or Sven, in my opinion. Oh, and he resigned after the FA understandably wanted to judge him in competitive matches and not just the 18 friendlies he managed.

      By summer of 1998 Gazza was in terrible shape, in the friendlies against Saudi, Morocco and Belgium he was very poor. Glenn gave him until the last possible moment to get in shape, and was really generous considering he was playing Division 1 with Middlesborough, not even in the Premier League but he didn't. And never did again sadly.

    The journalist in this sums up the insularity and naivety of Uk press for 58 years. Thinking England were better than they were. England have NEVER destroyed a world class team in finals of a tournament, incl Holland in 96. List all their victories and its not impressive. Finally, most of England is waking up to the fact that they have either lacked the technical players, the mental winning mentality or the right manager. And the 3 failings have cost them everything. Look at Eng line up in 2004 v France. Its a dream in every position, with a good manager. So what happened...mental break down.
