England v Moldova taking over from Italy after having lost home earlier to them was a great result particularly as a Long term England massive fan from Italy like me.
Not really. Gaza wasn't fit and anderton played v well as wing back for england in 98. Le tiss wouldn't be so good as wing back as he struggled to run.
17:00 - how didn't Kinkladze get a penalty? Maybe the replay showed something different, but from what we saw here I don't know how that commentator was so convinced???
Venables drew as many games as he won. Qualified automatically for Euro 96. Won 2 games in normal time at Euro 96. Not better than Hoddle or Sven, in my opinion. Oh, and he resigned after the FA understandably wanted to judge him in competitive matches and not just the 18 friendlies he managed.
I drove from London to Rome to watch that game with my 3 mates , stayed in a hotel next to some apartments not too far from the stadium, the room had a roof garden . We was outside singing and doing the conga all night long ! Woke up drove back to London , was well over a 1000 miles . I think we thought we was in the Italian job , great Memories, walking back to hotel was very precarious lots of trouble from locals attacking the English !
Having watched the absolute footballing dross that was Euro 2024 I yearn for these days where football was an exciting attacking spectacle not just a tactical, attritional chess game with all the joy taken out of it. I’m not just talking about England, although we were one of the worst offenders, but the whole thing was just boring.
By summer of 1998 Gazza was in terrible shape, in the friendlies against Saudi, Morocco and Belgium he was very poor. Glenn gave him until the last possible moment to get in shape, and was really generous considering he was playing Division 1 with Middlesborough, not even in the Premier League but he didn't. And never did again sadly.
Ferdinand so bang avera ge. That finish when thru late on at home to Poland. Always the mark of a nothing player when that's the best u can do in that situation
The journalist in this sums up the insularity and naivety of Uk press for 58 years. Thinking England were better than they were. England have NEVER destroyed a world class team in finals of a tournament, incl Holland in 96. List all their victories and its not impressive. Finally, most of England is waking up to the fact that they have either lacked the technical players, the mental winning mentality or the right manager. And the 3 failings have cost them everything. Look at Eng line up in 2004 v France. Its a dream in every position, with a good manager. So what happened...mental break down.
Not a very good manager in 2004 unfortunately. The players are definitely there, the managers have often been well below par probably because the best don't want away from club management.
Can't blame one player for the loss against that quality Italian team. I'm sure if played against teams like Georgia, he would have banged the goals in.
Not picking Gazza is like Argentina not picking Maradonna and it's ridiculous but then you think it was Scholes instead and you understand a bit but really should of been Ince who was dropped! Ince was a work horse but not a player like Gazza or Scholes

Look how happy they were to qualify, how much it genuinely meant to them. I feel a lot of that sincerity is lost in today's football.
