The Velvet Bulldozer and SRV, it doesn’t get any better than that! King as a lefty learned to play a right handed guitar upside down without even restringing it. Mind blowing!
Awesome review as always brother. And thank you for doing this one for me. I knew you would get a kick out that song and performance. Albert King is the coolest baddest cat ever in Blues music - you combine Stevie the baddest cat on guitar ever = pure Gold! I will have another request/review for you next week before Christmas - this next one might just be SRV's most insanely fast guitar work he has ever performed. Look for it in the 'Buy me a Coffee' section. Man I love revisiting all this great Blues music and going down the rabbit hole with you my friend....
If you watch one of the many docs or bios done about him, his guys said Stevie didn’t have stage clothes and street/home clothes. They were just Stevie’s clothes. Purse pants, a red shirt and green hate with a huge plume. That was just Stevie. So fun. He didn’t even see it!
The first time Albert King met SRV, Albert said "you're that kid who's been stealing my licks." There is another song from this session called _Don't You Lie to Me_ that you should check out.
👏👋🎸💙👌🫶‼️Couldn't click fast enough! Thanks David for recommending this one. I was planning on requesting Don't Lie To Me from this same session. The whole 90 minutes of "In Session" is a Treasure of Pleasure💙🎸💙 And Sohum you have already become my favorite Stevie reactor. Great job🫶. And you were witnessing two Blues Guitar Gods having a blast. They met in Austin Tx at Antone's Blues Club when Stevie was still a scrawny teenager and jammed every time Albert was in town. Self taught from age 7, he learned to play from listening to the Blues masters and, of course, Albert being one. The more familiar you get with Albert's playing you will hear licks and phrasing influences in Stevie's playing. The year is 1983 and Stevie is 29 here and Albert is 60. Albert known for not liking most people absolutely loved Stevie and they were great friends. Soham I do believe you have just been waiting for the Blues to wash over you and I predict there will be a wonderful discovery for you to make. I will be here for it💙👌💙
Sometimes when a younger guy plays with one of his mentors/heroes, he kinda pulls back and underperforms a little, out of a healthy mix of respect and intimidation. This wasn’t one of them times. Whole album is epic.
This entire album is brilliant ! Cream did this song as well and it was the first time I heard it. But this is a master piece and as blues as you can get ! :)
There are a few reasons why Albert sounds like his amp should be turned up when playing with Stevie. Stevie used 0.13 gauge strings (still bent the c*ap out of them) for that rich deep tone and used the fat end of the pic to attack the strings with lots of power. Albert is playing a left handed guitar with strings reversed (!) and never learned to use a pic. And used much lighter strings. There may be more to it but for these reasons alone it makes a huge difference.
"Wine and Women" is all I crave...
Albert was one of Stevie’s mentors. Steve just adored the old guard and gave them respect. ❤🙏
SRV had an affinity for both Albert's (King and Collins who was also from Texas Stevie grew up admiring and listening to)
The album from this session is just fire. It's one of my all-time favourites.

Cheers friend. You picked a great song for my reaction. The blues rabbit hole seems like its calling my name....
For more blues, check out anything by Buddy Guy.

I wish you saw the talk at the beginning
Two greats...

You need to try Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart doing “I’d Rather Go Blind”. You will definitely fall in love with the Blues.

Wine and women not why women. Bring up the words. ❤❤❤❤
Albert considered Stevie his godson. Albert didn't get along with many other people
You notice anything different about Albert's guitar? Left handed and strung upside down like playing a right handed guitar left handed.
