  • www.friendsofjohnnyclegg.com - In 2018 a group of well-known musicians came together to celebrate the life and work of Johnny Clegg and recorded a special version of his song - THE CROSSING.
All proceeds will go to the ‘Friends of Johnny Clegg Fund’ for primary education. The fund is all about changing lives of young learners all across South Africa, through literacy programmes and using technology in education to pursue outcomes-based interventions. The Fund is managed by The Click Foundation who will distribute funds to their various centers across South Africa.
Visit the FriendsOfJohnnyClegg website for more information on the singers, or how to contribute to the Fund.
    THE CROSSING - JOHNNY CLEGG
Through all the days that eat away
At every breath that I take
Through all the nights I've lain alone
    In someone else's dream, awake
All the words in truth we have spoken
That the wind has blown away
It's only you that remains with me
Clear as the light of day
O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)
A punch drunk man in a downtown bar
Takes a beating without making a sound
Through swollen eyes he sways and smiles
'Cause no one can put him down
Inside of him a boy looks up to his father
For a sign or an approving eye
Oh, it's funny how those once so close and now gone
Can still so affect our lives
O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)
Take me now, don't let go
Hold me close, I'm coming home
O Siyeza, o siyeza , sizofika webaba noma
(we are coming, we are coming, we will arrive soon)
O siyeza, o siyeza, siyagudle lomhlaba
(we are coming, we are coming, we are moving across this earth)
    Siyawela lapheshaya lulezontaba ezimnyama
(we are crossing over those dark mountains)
    Lapha sobheka phansi konke ukhulupheka
(where we will lay down our troubles)

Johnny was the first 'celebrity' I ever met in person. I passed him in a hotel parking lot and said 'Howzit Johnny.' He kindly returned the gesture. What an incredible life. This tribute is testament to the lives he's touched with his music. I grew up listening to The Scatterlings of Africa on LP. My first musical influence now that I think about it. Thanks for the 'firsts' Johnny. Your love for South Africa and it's people will be fondly remembered and honoured. Thanks for posting this Karen.

I love that country, it will always be dear to my heart. I’m so glad I got to see Johnny Clegg live a couple of times. Always shed a tear when I hear his music. Johnny Clegg was not only a great musician and songwriter, but he was flat out one of the finest human beings that ever lived. His integrity, courage, and compassion were unmatched. Not only South Africa but the entire world were blessed by his presence, and we're all diminished now that he's gone.

This video should be played before every Parliament sitting, before every political rally and before every interview with any politician. Because this is who the broader public is. And despite the attempts by our politicians to divide us, this harmony is what most South Africans want. This should be the soundtrack to our revolution, where we take away the divisive rethoric from our politicians and remind them that most of us want peace and unity. Well done to all the artists. You made a middle aged white guy shed a tear for what South Africa is suppose to be.

One day when the politicians and media are put in their place, we will get there. I just hope my kids get to experience South Africa as it should be, the SA Johnny Clegg and so many others fought for.

Africa divided by those who viewed themselves as superior to others. Then oppressed by those who did not want to share. Along came Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu and many others that paid dearly to make the world understand that freedom and equality is not negotiable. The legacy of Johnny Clegg put it in song and here we are as a united nation...

I saw him while I was in my hometown in Chiapas, Mexico for the first time on TV at the Biding Ceremony of the South Africa world Cup on 2010, I became a fan of him instantly. A year later I had the chance to see him live in Montreal, Canada at his Human Tour, It's been the best show I've ever been. At the end of the show he signed shirts and discs, he signed a shirt I bought at that concert and gave him big a hug and told him how much I admire him and that his music reached so remote places like rural Chiapas in southern Mexico, he smiled staring at my eyes and reply with a huge thankyou shaking my hand with both his. He was so human, so humble, so kind.. I was hoping to see him at least one more time in my lifetime, sadly it would not happen. The world doesnt see artists like this very ofte. Farewell my beloved Johnny Clegg.
I listen your music almost everyday.

I have been a fan of Mr, Clegg since the 80s. As a citizen born in the US, I am jealous that we do not have a national hero like him, a bridge between cultures, pointing the way to a brighter future. He's your Pete Seeger, & Dylan (if Bob was more politcally active), & your Eric Clapton, adopting a music tradition from another, so very worthy culture. He has rightfully celebrated the value of every culture, that can be woven into the tapestry of Humanity. What a Great Heart !!! I cry everytime I watch/hear him & his brothers, sisters, mentors performing together. Long may his life guide us !

I just found out that Johnny has passed away. I'm utterly heartbroken. Such a beautiful man. Such a great version of this song. Glad he got to hear it.

Stuck here in a very strange U.K. This is the song I play everytime I miss my motherland (which is a LOT of the time!) One day, I too will come home, to do my small part in building an awesome South Africa, for ALL of us, in whatever way I can contribute!

Paige Mac sang at my wedding. She even serenaded my wife and I during ceremony. What a beautiful country we live in with beautiful people. We need to encourage the inherent goodness that lies within the vast majority of our lands people. We must stand #strongertogether and be the change we want to see.

As a 74 year old Jewish family gentleman, I watched this for the first time today, Xmas day, 2018. And cried a little. Also being a former muso of many years it had just that much more meaning to me. My best wishes and sincere blessings to you all who made it possible AND to JOHNNY CLEGG,..............to say more about this incredible, amazing person loved by SO many would be futile. It's ALL been said already. Go well dear friend Johnny. Mayelana zomusa.

May South Africa find the healing it so desperately needs in the manner of this song. From a biracial American who cares.

    I asked the wise man,
"How many Anthems of Hope, Tears of Compassion, Prayers for Deliverance and Hands Held in Healing will it take, to rescue my country from the Yoke of Darkness" ?
    And He replied....
"As much as any Good Soul is willing to Invest. For that Reward is Priceless".
    JohnK.
This was so awesome, not only did it bring tears to my eyes, but I posted to all my friends & family, both in SA & Abroad. Thank you Karen & all who participated.
May your day be filled with Love & Kindness.
That Day too will Dawn 🌅🕊️🌈

Ten years out of the country, and forgot what being South African is. Then this video comes screaming at me.... I'll admit I had a little sob. And to recognise faces and voices from a time and place long forgotten.. Arno, Karen, Freshlyground, then Juanita and Patricia from my earlier days. THIS is the community of people with whom I belong.
I'm coming home (or at least this video made me want to start the process)
I've watched this more than 20 times in a row.

Beautiful song indeed. I first saw the original song late in 1992.I was sitting with my dad.My dad then told me that it was about a friend of Johnny Clegg and a fellow bandmate named Dudu Mntowaziyo Ndlovu who died in the same year. This has been my best song eversince. It brings tears to my eyes even to this very day.
