In the mid 50's, one morning I was sitting out under a tree and in the distance a John Deer was towing a hay bailer. As it came up the field against a slight hill, it started blowing perfect smoke rings. The sound of the tractor, along with the birds, cows mooing in the distance is something I'll remember until I die.

We used to sit outside after supper and listen to the two lungers plowing or disking.
We would listen to the birds settling down and the crickets.
      Good memory

North Dakota The A was a three bottom tractor. Dad farmed black jumbo ground and some clay hills with three bottom plow behind an A with no problem. Although some years that were wet, we had to "drop a gear" to get through. Plowing was a relaxing time for me, especially fall plowing. I would take the windshield off the heathouser so I would stay warm and yet have the cool air in my face. Then just enjoy a peaceful evening and the sky full of stars. That was back in the 1950s and 60s before all the light "pollution" when you could see all the stars yet. I felt that was one great evening, and given a chance, I would do it again.

Imagine fitting one of these with a Power Block, a Heisler head and Johnson manifold with a Carburetor off of a G to feed it. That's how you handle 3-14s with an A and recover like that. Little over 54 hp. Do the same thing to a G and you got about 74 hp. You had to use Automotive regular and not Farm gasoline in both. This is also a Cyclone A which had better pistons and compression to begin with than All Fuel Long Hood As. The gasoline 70s had a 376 CI were as the all fuel 70 used the 412 ci from the G. Doing all of that to an All Fuel G or 70 gave you more power than the gas 376 in the 70 Despite it having a 2 bbl Carburetor. I don't recall a 2 bbl intake for the all fuel engines or a Heisler head for the 376 ci 70, 302 ci 60, but they may have. The 60 handled a 3-14 without issue so few farmers did much or didn't see the need to coax more power from their much improved number series tractor.

Pulling 3 furrow plough in quite a high gear but the long stroke engine develops high torque as the revs drop.

The early model A were less horsepower but the later model A's could pull 3 bottom plows just fine. Did it for years as a young kid helping my grandfather on the farm.

No its not if you have it tuned up just right it will pull a three bottom plow my grandfather had a 1949 john deer A that him and i use to farm with and we farmed with that tractor and we had used a 3 bottom plow in the black dirt and a 4 bottom plow for the softer sandy ground we used that john deere A to pull those two plows we had on the farm but that tractor didnt have no problem pulling the 3 and 4 bottom plow tilling up the farm land plus we also have it a over haul and gave it bigger valves and we had bored the block out 60 oversized that it more power and we put a john deere G carb on it tuned the carb just right and we gave it a new bigger tractor pulling race cam in it and thats how we was able to use those 3 and 4 bottom plows we had on the farm and at night you can see fire coming out the exhaust and you can see exhaust manifold turn bright glowing cherry red boy those bring back good memories when i was younger growing up on my grandparents farm farming with john deere A hearing it run and running strong heck that tractor would pull out a big stump idling with no problem without opening up the throttle all the way like most people do then spin the wheels and get nowhere
