Nice work!! 60 years ago my dad bought a push reel mower.. getting those cutters adjusted just right made all the difference. Nice the dually-dually running so well.. Well Done!
I am loving the reel mowers, they are fun to watch. I need a rear view mirrors on the mower to watch them. The dually is running super, I am loving it too! I may have to put it in the Christmas parade... Thanks for watching.
One of the issues with pull behind reel mowers is the tires on the tractor lay the grass down. Now you have dual wheels on your tractor just multiplies that. If you could rig it somehow to push the cutters instead of pull them I think it would work better. You would not have to keep looking over your shoulder when passing trees and other obstacles as well. Excellent find/donation sir. Great work.
Well they do mow golf courses with them. If I had the money and flat land, Id love to have something like this. Of course on the golf course they pull ten to fifteen behind a bigger tractor lol. Big green rooster tail lol.
You got reel mowers that are used in golf courses to mow fairways. I would take a stab at saying they are probably Jacobsen brand. I mowed an easy eight hours a day pulling a bunch of them with a width of 30 feet width. You brought back memories. The down side of reel mowers is they suck at cutting crabgrass. The proper way to say Poulin is Po-Lin. That is what I have been taught and told by someone from Louisiana. Where the company was located years ago. Reel mower needs to be adjusted and you can sharpen the blade by running them backward using lapping compound. The same stuff you use for grinding valve seats. When adjusted right you should hear metal sliding over metal. Cuts like scissors. Peace and out. VF
That is a lot of cool info, I cringe when I watch old video and hear how I said Poulan. Now days I say it Poland, which is closer to how you say it. thanks so much for watching.
You need to sharpen every single one of those blades before adjusting the bedknife, there are specialized tools to make sure you sharpen the blades evenly and don't get high or low spots.
When adjusting the reel to bedknives you need to set it so there is mimimal contact. This will impove the cut of the mower units do. To test your adjustment spin the reels by hand and put a piece of paper into the cut. When the reels turn there should be a metel on metal scraping sound. if there is a clicking then the blade is to tight. Also about every other year its a good idea to back lap the blades it helps in maintaining sharpness. Worked on a golf course for 8 years. I love the cut of a reel mower over a rotory mower any day.
It sounds like you really know what you are talking about and I thank you for all the advice. Does it work on tall grass at all? It just seem to lay mine over. I liked watching them in action. Thanks for watching.
That's a very helpful hints, my dad was the head mechanic at the golf course where I worked and he taught me how to adjust the reels to the bedknives and I always carried a pick set in my pocket to remove pine straw. I accomplished mowing 18 holes of ruff in one 8 hour day using a five gang Toro ruff unit behind a Ford 2910 tractor, the boss was at a loss for words after I took him out on the course to prove it to him, he didn't believe me when I told him I was finished with the ruff
I have worked on a golf course all my life too, I now own it. Paul West is right on the money, advantages you can cut lower and they are much more faster and smoother, downfalls are they are much more to maintain and grass has to be fairly dry and they can't cut grass if it gets too tall. You have to be careful now to over adjust them or it will take away the angle on the bedknife, both reel and bedknife has what is called relief in the grind so when the metal contacts it is point to point like a scissors. In the old days we back lapped them but that is a thing of the past.I If you take them to a golf course or a golf course equipment supplier they can sharpen them, we use a spin grinder for the reels and a bedknife grinder for the bedknife's, Bedknifes will eventually need replacing finding them for this mower maybe difficult. Your mower looks like they are what is called National's they are riveted in you cut the rivets and heat new ones and bang them in, problem is it warps the knife and they are impossible to grind, a lot of guys tapped the holes and went with countersunk screws. Toro, John Deere and Jacobsen are the big 3, I like Toro over anything, RR products has replacement bedknives, www.rrproducts.com. We cut our greens at 1/8th .025 height with reel mowers it the only way it can be done.
Interesting video! I've only seen a 5 gang reel never a 3 gang reel, and being pulled by a modified garden tractor. Impressive setup! We use a 5 deck rotary blade machine as the 4500D on the golf course. Some courses still use the 5 gang but also have either the the 4500 5 deck or 4700 7 deck. The cut from a reel type machine cuts much better but blade sharpening is a pain
Reel mowers can be great, watch some of the lawn related channels, they go over the blade to bed knife contact and how to maintain it with the reel mowers...they need to be pretty much rubbing to cut nicely and will occasionally need to be sharpened or honed. You can test whether they are cutting right by spinning the blade over a piece of paper whilst the paper is touching the bed knife, test in several places all along the length of the bed knife.
chud327 thanks I will and I also plan on making a silage trailer so it looks like I’m a mini forage harvester haha. Check out ‘murray bros’ on RUclips they have some great mower videos if you haven’t already seen them. Have a great day

It's possible, just spend the time and make the effort to know your neighbors. Every step with god. I'm certain you'll find one within a 10mile radius.
@@chud327 oh and your reels are real easy to sharpen. You take one of the wheels off and hook a drill up to the drive and run it in reverse. There is a graphite compound you put on the blades and it auto sharpens while you run the drill.

It almost looks as if the reel mowers in their frame would fit under the Poulan. If they don't interfere with your front wheels in turns, you could actually turn this beast back into a riding mower with the mower under the belly.
That is actually a cool idea, but then I would not be able to watch it cutting. I need to mount it up front so I could really watch it. Thanks for watching.
You can sharpen the reel mower on your workbench. Take one drive wheel off and put a drill on the drive put mower in vise take valve lapping compound apply generously to the blades turn drill on spin for a few minutes then check sharpness add more lapping compound and spin more if need .
If you had a riding lawn mower 42inch cut attach 2 -20 inch reel mowers on either side of mower thats additional 40 inches of cutting thats a total of 82 inches of cutting that would cut your mowing in half

Would love to get my hands on a set of those reel mowers like that. I am curious how fast you can pull them before they become ineffective or explode.
FireAndGasoline probobly pretty fast cause the blades spin at the speed their being towed
Jacob 014 yeah but at some point they are gonna fail not being made for speed. Do you think they would work at 50+ mph?
FireAndGasoline nah , I'd say your in the green up to about 25 Wich is still pretty fast , when most mow at about 3 mph

If you wanted to plant a small patch of wheat you could use this to cut it. I don't know how you would bundle the straw or thresh it.
Mishawaka Post this would not work to cut wheat. You would have to use a sickle bar or haybine if the wheat is not taken with a combine.
The wheat would shell out unless u have a swather, combine, or scythe
I guess it would just chop the wheat up...
