    Cool video showing the entire process. I'm glad you included the metal buckets as well. Growing up in upstate NY this was a way to make extra money as a kid. Gathering sap buckets. I'll take that job over bailing & throwing hay anytime 👍

    • @klinefarms4815
      @klinefarms4815 3 года назад +6

      That’s a good question! When figuring that we count taps not tree’s. Some tree’s have two or more taps on them. It also depends on the weather and season, how much a tap could produce each run. The run in this video we averaged 1.7 gallons of sap per tap. Last year for the whole season we averaged 1/5 of a gallon of syrup per tap. No we do not plug holes the tree heals itself on it’s own.

    1.) Will the tree repair itself when a person drills a hole into the tree?
    2.) Does drilling at an upward angle help the sap run any better?
    3.) How deep of a hole is needed, especially in a Pine tree?
    4.) Can a person visit the farm and learn first-hand how to tap a tree - in a way that it will not cause permanent damage to the tree?

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  2 года назад

      We only tap maple trees. The hole is 5/16 and only drilled about a 1.5 into the tree. Hole never drilled in the same spot from the year before. The tree heals itself very quickly. If you have some maple trees on our property... tap them and have fun!

    • @klinefarms4815
      @klinefarms4815 3 года назад +1

      It can if a tree is tapped to young or has to many taps put on in a season. Making maple syrup goes back to Native Americans and if done right won’t harm the tree’s life span.

    • @scouterandrew8888
      @scouterandrew8888 3 года назад

      It’s supposed to help if you drill north south east west every following year, then move to a higher level. When you return to the low level the tree should be and inch or so thicker and healed. 3/16 tubes also heal quicker than 5/16

    • @HomegrownPassion
      @HomegrownPassion  3 года назад

      No we definitely don’t want to do that. They follow good practices and make sure their taps are clean and they only tap trees that are big enough to heal themselves. There’s a guide on how many taps can go on a tree based on diameter and they stay on the conservative side.
