My advice Kate is to hang on in there. I discovered McKenna in 2000 just after he sadly passed. I was (and forever will be) a Bill Hicks fan and he name-dropped him on one of his shows and my journey started there! I was young, as was the Internet and his talks/lectures/insights were scarce online - but I bought his books. This is what I recommend! Read him first, then listen to him, then understand him. I’ve often declared his the most important intellect of the latter half of the 20th century for years to friends and family, all of whom feel the same way as you- and as I don’t consider myself intellectually gifted by any stretch, I can only conclude it’s because I read him before I listened to him! So give it a whirl, and welcome to the rest of your life 🙏 x

In late 1999, McKenna described his thoughts concerning his impending death to interviewer Erik Davis: (he was diagnosed w/terminal brain cancer) I always thought death would come on the freeway in a few horrifying moments, so you'd have no time to sort it out. Having months and months to look at it and think about it and talk to people and hear what they have to say, it's a kind of blessing. It's certainly an opportunity to grow up and get a grip and sort it all out. Just being told by an unsmiling guy in a white coat that you're going to be dead in four months definitely turns on the lights. ... It makes life rich and poignant. When it first happened, and I got these diagnoses, I could see the light of eternity, à la William Blake, shining through every leaf. I mean, a bug walking across the ground moved me to tears.
That’s beautiful. And Such a Simplified Answer to Living in The moment or Truly Living. Each Conscious moment should be Soaked up, eXperienced fully and Felt with any and all senses. McKenna being Moved to tears by the Beauty of Creation in his final phase of this Dream, is an Honest and Real Awareness of The Divine Beauty All Around US at all times, Its so Sublime and We being so desensitized and Stimulated by a myriad of Illusory issues mentally that we fail To SEE it with Eyes that Feel and Feel it with Eyes that See. McKenna most certainly was already aware of this but his tears were not from noticing IT for the first Time, but possibly for the last. Our Experience here is so beautiful. And yet trapped within this construct of material thought and desire, we must Focus fully and with discipline On the Truth of Our lives. Thanks for sharing that ✌🏻
I was a tradesman in my 20s, tool and die, I recorded hours an hours of Terence McKenna talks and for a few years would listen to them most of my workday while working. I still have a fondness for Terrence and was always sad that he died so young. His talks got me through that period of my life for sure!! Thanks for recognizing him!!
I love to hear Terence too. I may not have the interlect to comprehend and process all of McKenna's thoughts and theories. But I never get tired of listening to him. I learn things slowly. An hour or 2 (sometimes more if I'm lucky) with Terence is so engrossing and immensive it can be its own psychedelic experience. The notion of not giving yourself and all your learning to one philosophy or leader/guru etc 'Build your own damn boat' is one of my favourite all time McKenna quotes.
Me too! His wisdom and insights have been a welcome companion throughout my adult life. I had the pleasure of speaking with him once after a talk he gave in London...a truly beautiful human being!
I was lucky enough to meet and hang out with Terrence in the jungles of Plalenque , Mexico in January 1999. He was part of the psychedelic conference at a hotel called Chan Ka...I was part of some back pack travelers living in El Pan Chan. One of the guys in our group was attending the conference and that's how I was able to get in and meet everyone. We hung out by the poolside and Terrence just talked he was so mesmerizing. We came another day and met up with Terrence and Johnathon Ott about coming to our camp. Terrence came over and we all sat in a circle and listened to him speak!!! He also talked about the expansion of the universe and time. I didn't know the significance of that experience at the time. What Very lovely man, so humble and intelligent. I think he died later that year...so sad. A true visionary!
I love the growth Russel has embraced in his life. I really appreciate his videos and his will to share. I know he doesn’t read comments but if you can share this with him, I would love for him to be aware of my gratefulness.
TM was such a gift. For a season of my life, I would fall asleep at night listening to his talks. His heroic dose method for navigating psilocybin. It changed my life.
I absolutely love listening to Terence McKenna. His descriptive language is so eloquent. His insights and understanding of reality were on point and his mind was truly fascinating. 💕 ☮️
@Darren He wasn't seeking spirituality in the way of people from the hippies to now have, that whole movement micro dosing, smoking DMT, abuse of drugs etc, he was better than that and used the drugs more like how some of the medical system is starting to study again. These drugs can change lives for the better especially if used by the mentally ill, but are never to be abused. They are true medicine only and can bring positive changes in ones life, sometimes only with one use. I still have my core which has not been changed by very infrequent psychedelic use. I have seen people find God, Jesus etc through psychedelic use, like yourself. These are extremely complex substances that need to be understood from every angle. Just because I don't believe in belief systems doesn't mean I don't have a hope and faith in something that may or may not be.
@Darren Darren, I watched your video and I agree with you even though I also agree with most of Terrence McKenna's view. May I suggest 'Advaita Vedanta'? It's the pinnacle of the Vedas, most of the time overlooked. It speaks about the natural state of ignorance we are in, how to acquire knowledge of the true self, but also it deals with the power of projection and veiling that cover our consciousness. I read you have found your path and if you like I can recommend two books on this advaita subject, if you are interested of course. Thanks for the video it is refresing to see a new prespective on something I am familiar with.
Terence McKenna once claimed he was a “true anarchist” which I love and even though when you hear him talk it sounds very esoteric he actually was an extremely skeptical person, which just goes to show the power of the psychedelic experience
He lead me in that direction 30 years ago and if 2020/2021 hasn't done it for you I don't think you will. Government is a prelandline technology in a post smartphone world. - Michael Malice
@@NathanCline12-21 I like Malice, the problem I have with his views is his tendency to externalise evil which in my opinion can only lead to disaster if put in practice
He knew it's important not to get wrapped up in the ideas, and be a witness to events. As Terence once said (paraphrasing): belief is the killer of creative objectivity.
It's debatable, "the power of the psychedelic experience". Not all can grow from absolute despair and misery. Just a word of caution (yes, from experience. :))
I've literally spent years listening to hours of McKenna's audio orations and narrations combined with Allan Watts, Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson and many and their beautiful minds. Parallel with that I've became acquainted with the work from wonderful Paul Stamets and his thorough mycelium research and his acknowledgement and confirmation of the misrepresented/misunderstood theory of "stoned ape hypothesis" in McKenna's book "Food of the Gods". Throughout the years one thought was always present in my mind and that is the notion of all of "us" as "One Being" manifesting itself through confines of our society (faster and faster with the means of technological byproducts such as social networks), and which has gone through its "puberty phase" and is now looking itself in a mirror of society and it's not "happy". Also I recommend very recent and beautifully presented experience while on psilocybin mushrooms, by Sam Harris. Love u all ❤️ P.S. I'm sorry in advance for my English spelling and/or writing since it's not my native language
I've been doing Alan Watts and found Terence McKenna brilliant but a bit harder to get my head around. I find your analysis useful. My favourite Terence quote is " culture is not your friend" ......
Alan Watts is fantastic. This is particularly hard hitting, right from the start. Title is "Your role in the game of life": ruclips.net/video/3EJcdqN0LrY/видео.html . "The social game is played with an initial rule. The first rule being 'this game is serious'... or 'this game is not a game'". He talks about how "the joker" character has this insight... which explains why Russell gets it so well.
@ Kate:There is no current or past teacher who comes close to Alan Watts. While he too pontificates like many of t'others, Alan gets to the kernel of the kernel faster. Alan has said on several occasions that he talks because he is paid to and that's how he earns his bread, so to speak. "This IS it and YOU are IT." Most folks don't understand the striking of the gong as a symbol of Zen.
I like Alan Watts and Terence McKenna both but I like McKenna more. I know what you mean with having a hard time wrapping your mind around his philosophy, but to be completely honest I don’t think Terence McKenna himself would have claimed to have his mind wrapped around his philosophy either lmao he often said he had some bats in the belfry, but the more you listen the more you will understand his craziness
I truly have liked Alan Watts as a philosopher more than anyone else, but Terence McKenna is absolutely great too. It would have been wonderful to see the two of those talking about some issues together. Could have been a mindblowing discussion to say the least.
I am so grateful to you bringing terrence Mckenna's work to us. This past week I've been blown away by his enlightened state and explanations of his experiences. Mind blowing, breathe taking beauty and experiences. I love it. Thank you Sir ☺️
You definitely assisted me with moving forward with my podcast called My Heart Remembers. I was living in a area where even using the word "Spiritual" is frowned upon never mind the Divine. This was to the degree that I felt uncomfortable all the time. So the idea of my making a podcast called me to the point of fear. My daily practice was suffering and this suffering was to the point where I was physically ill. This brought about the loss of any way to be a part of my community as well. I have been doing my podcast weekly for over two years now and I... Thank you so much for your help. Peaceful blessings be with you and your family.
I enjoy this kind of content Russell!!! keep going and thankyou!!! :)) “The imagination is the goal of history. I see culture as an effort to literally realize our collective dreams.” - Terrence McKenna
I absolutely LOVE Terrence McKenna!!!! Listening to him speak is like a trip within itself!! I agree wholeheartedly that he is far underrated!!! Gone too soon, Father Psychonaught
Thank You Russell! I have told my son many times that Terrence was right with the "Timewave Zero" project that he conceived. I remember thinking as I dug deep down that hole, "I can't believe I understood everything that man just said, but I did". Now, all these yrs later, being able to take myself to "a 40,000ft. view"...he was spot on with everything!
It changed the way I watch TV... that is, I try not to watch it much now haha. The chapter on TV is horrific. The drugs we take define us and, therefore, society and subsequently the world. You have natural drugs (nature) or artificial drugs (no nature) is the essential message of the book. Weve chosen "no nature"... and surprise surprise were now destroying nature 🤣🤣 🙏
I like Terence's delivery and presence ... He was ahead of his time, I thought he was referring to social media but just learned that he passed in 2000 🌹... Digital media is definitely more mind controlling than other forms .. it plugs people in for almost their whole day thereby having enormous influence, whereas other forms such as tv, newspapers and cinema only gain our attention for shorter periods ... Thanks for sharing the wisdom and perspectives of these very interesting people ... There's many I hadn't heard of before until your useful recommendations ✨💛✨

Terence McKenna was an exceptional being! Wish he was still alive today ~ but I guess his ideas are! He gave so many excellent talks including in 1998 about how to supply Clean Energy in this one called Don't Follow Leaders. You can find it on RUclips ♥️
@Darren If you had done a little more research, you would have found out that doctors expressed that his brain tumour categorically had nothing whatsoever to do with the psychotropics he was taking.
I’m glad we can appreciate someone’s deep understanding of the nature of this universe because of hallucinogens. Some of us have been channeling such information with extra sensory abilities. I don’t care if acquiring information with hallucinogens is more credible... as long as we get to the truth. Maybe science will catch up.
Ah I remember the optimistic promise the internet held… so sad how it turned out. Personal responsibility and education is the only way out. You got to want it though and it has its own consequences.
So nice to hear Terence put into words that have been loosely floating in my head I.e. that we are no longer a cohesive culture but rather layers of niches. There are up and down sides of this. For me I feel like I never know who I’m meeting. There was a time you knew certain beliefs were a given.

There are indeed many paths up the mountain, Russell has certainly done opiates, and they also have a tangential effect, a way of viewing social reality opposite to the given narratives.
How could anyone push the dislike button on this video? Terence McKenna is a legend, a god father of the study of consciousness and reality. Thanks for the video.
Mckenna inspired me to get into mycology. I gave that up years ago but the effects will never go away. That's what opened my eyes to what was going on in the world
'Rejecting Authority' I think the video is called. We can see the duality in this evolution with the separation of the Public into groups LBTQRSTUV...It can protect us from authoritarian control and fuel it.. I'm deeply suspicious of all things Covid..how healthy is democracy, public health and cultural output seeming? I went to church for the first time as an adult recently (at this point just "exploring") and I found myself simultaneously disagreeing completely with one of the speakers (on covid) whilst recognising the unity despite the disagreement, in our shared use of the church. Much of western civilisation is/was rooted in Christianity, its history and use of power is obviously mixed but irrationally or not, I'm not sure, I fear we are in the process of replacing the Church with something far, far less Holy.
Russell, if you like McKenna check out Marshall McLuhan. He predicted the internet back in the early '60s and his philosophy of media and how they change our patterns of thinking is still overlooked and misunderstood today. For my money he's THE most underrated philosopher of the 20th century.

The physicality of the atom is only 1% of its existence, yet that is all most of us are aware of. And even if we are thinking, most of us are thinking about physical relatable thinhs. Thus we are multidmensional beings and it is there that lies the true final frontier. The way society is going, it is the only option open to us and the only option which will give us truth and eternal lasting effect.
I was thinking this to myself the other night. I believe that social media will retrospectively be viewed in the same category as the wheel and electricity. It's impacts on us as a species have been so profound.
Love this! Let’s use all these brilliant minds, past and present, to spring board forward into the reality that we can have. Love is all that matters. Let’s focus on positive uplifting information. So sick of MSM and most internet platforms.
I had listened to McKenna for several years, as well I had read his books. There’s no doubt that for me he was one of those amazing humans get got the chance to have them on video and audio. There’s a really good channel here in RUclips that breaks down his lectures.

@100% Quality Interesting, I didn't know anything about the correlation of melanin and awareness. Divide and conquer is an old dominance tactic. Take for example what happened in Ruanda, they divided people into different nose types and the consequence is the horror we know happened. I see they are now trying to divide people again into vaccinated and non vaccinated, as long as people are unaware they can play with their minds. There's only one race, the human race, it doesn't matter skin colour, country, sexual preference, religion, political view or anything, we all need each other and the sooner we get out of our arrogance the better. Take care 😉
We can't live a transactional existence. It doesn't leave any room for love, which exists in communal groups (the Many) who are shepherded by the One. Without that One-to-Many relationship, this Home is going to collapse on itself. We need to uplift the One. The end is nigh.

Yes, agreed. 5 years ago, I saw a video of him saying what would happen during these times, how fast things would speed up in relation to everything, including Nature, just before a new cycle begins. It's showing to be spot-on.
If you're friends with Michael Pollan, I'm sure he's got lots of Terence McKenna material from writing "How to Change Your Mind" ha. It's one of the best comprehensive books on psychedelics IMO. I always thought death would come on the freeway in a few horrifying moments, so you'd have no time to sort it out.

If I heard a tradie working while listening to McKenna I'd pick them up, well attempt to.
You took the words right out of my mouth brother
Under the skin with paul stamets please, he was friends with Terence. He must have some good stories for you Russell

And Rick Doblin. And of course Dennis McKenna.
Paul is a genius
Yes please. Great idea. Paul Staments is amazing.
Don't forget his brother Dennis! He's got plenty of interesting stories and a wealth of knowledge of his own
I'm so happy that Terence is making a comeback, at least for some, he's been with me for a long time and I doubt his voice will ever leave me.

Same and same ✌️
I absolutely love listening to Terence McKenna.
A true visionary just suggesting theres a different way of looking at life hes gold to listen to really opened my mind
He has the most annoying voice and really hasn't got that much psychedelic experiences.

"The meaning of life is sex, drugs, and rock n roll .....and higher mathematics"
-Terence McKenna
Alan Watts 🤯🤯🤯🤯 I love listening to him. So relaxing. 💞👑🙏🏼

Is it even 1%? I doubt that is even close. Much, much less. Thanks for your input. Cheers.

Feels like listeing to a bed time storyteller that brings you insights, wisdom, peace and fufillment .
Terence vocabulary is incredible and opens and broaden your perception.
I've loved listening to McKenna for years now & I love that you spoke highly of him in this episode. Nice. x L.
