- Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was a well-known British philosopher, writer and speaker, best known for his interpretation of Eastern philosophy for Western audiences. He left behind more than 25 books and an audio library of nearly 400 talks, which are still in great demand.

I know if I was on my death bed, I would want to see this. I think this video could be highly beneficial for older patients in hospitals. I've shown this to several doctors and nurses, and gotten great feedback so far. If you know anyone who works with the elderly or hopelessly ill patients, please share this with them. I'd love to hear their feedback. These ideas could fix some of the major issues in our current healthcare system. I also want to give a big thank you to those who support on Patreon! www.patreon.com/AfterSkool
For patiants maybe. But could be a lot less applicable as biological imortality technology is becoming closer. Not even talking about having superhuman bodies. Sooner or later, we will all die. But why not have a bigger lifespan and longest period healthy adulthood?
Gleb Strelets I feel what you mean. That would be cool though. But If biological immortality becomes a mainstream thing in the future then of course a lot of people will want go on that route. Alan Watts said. We need to make more room for the next generation to come, which I agree so they can bring change and utilize this realm to their greater good. I honestly don’t have a problem with immortality but if people would want to live longer then in that case either they may just be to afraid to face death or they are just holding on to the physical world to the point they don’t wanna leave when there is other life we can experience that could be way better than Earth. I think Earth, it could also get over crowded maybe.
@@Rynergy99 I think that in Elon we Musk (stolen phrase from Burgercrueg)... I mean, Elon Musk would and his companies would probably create a successful colony on Mars at that point. And I think that space habitats and biological immortality would go mainstream at the same time, because real estate would start to become more expensive at when BI started to work in practise as a product. And wealthy nations in which such a thing would go mainstream would probably have even less birth per capita then.
P S BI would make bigger part of society want to protect the envorinement. In the begining, even the elites would probably start fighting for ecology, because no one can predict when space habitats will even become practical. Middle class is the next affected.
You're doing something great!

There's certainly a correlation between traumatic life events and deeper intellectual and existential thoughts. In the same way you don't think about what would happen if your phone was stolen, all the information that could be lost, we don't think of how much our life is worth to us and others, and what it's all really about, until we might lose it. But it's not exactly necessary. Some people think ahead, they see the point and they see through all the bullshit society pushes, putting up distractions from the real meaning of life.

What a truly amazing and beautiful 10 minute speech. The current human condition is so strangely unnatural and depressing that I grew to become a miserable depressed adult with not a single clue as to what I was doing here.
It is through the wisdom and teaching of those before me that have opened my eyes to the reality behind the curtains.
Although I still suffer through life, in many ways I feel far more free than ever before.

@@r-gart the ego is a funny thing.
I’ve worked in trauma care most of my life and have tried to preach this, but you truly meet with massive hostility from the institutions and family. I always tried to convey to the patient that death is the natural part of life as common as birth.
The patience will most likely come to these conclusions on their own as they fade closer to the event. Even if not, death will reveal it to them. And what a good laugh they will have following this!
Alan Watts has given more to me than anyone I’ve ever actually met in my time and it’s so cool
I've loved Alan Watts for over 20 years and he never gets old.... even repeating the same! Awesome!
There are people in hospitals who cannot talk, move their body, cannot eat or drink, etc. They can move their eyes and look around the room. Their families keep them alive thru hospital machines. The hospitals see these people as a source of money- to charge insurance companies and collect money from family estates.
Ask yourself, would you want that to be you?
No I absolutely don't
You know what would be good for a guy like me? Just to be in a coma. Keep me alive! God damn it! And give me a TV! I want to watch Geraldo! Because let's face it you have to be brain-dead to want to watch Geraldo in the first place. - George Carlin
The state of being unnatural is coined by humans. How do we defined something as unnatural if it simply occurs or is created? If we are to mold the environment to our fitting, wouldn’t that be natural evolution of the environment? How is it unnatural to use that knowledge to preserve someone’s life? Personally I see no issue with choosing a natural or morphine based death....
I wanna die in the sun under a tree. Not doped up in a cold white room.
Well just about all you said was wrong... Most people that end up in the hospital have some kind of insurance,? and they've already signed a waiver saying they want to be hooked to a machine and kept alive and or, unplugged after a certain amount of time.
Been there done that.

Namaste, I absolutely love Alan Watts, so much of his great teachings resonate so well.
Great video for all humanity to fully comprehend.
My Grandmother always said very lovingly that “That the old must die because this is the natural way of things” “The young could die and this is unnatural” “Appreciation for everything, everyday in every way is the best way to live”
I have no idea why this made me tear up the way it did, but I'm just in awe right now.
I never get tired of listening to Alan Watts
Great video. I think this is why psychedelic/mystical experiences can be so profound. They remove your ego so you feel like you're dying, yet it's the most natural and familiar feeling ever.
My last few shrooms trips I’ve focused on killing my ego and I’ve came to the conclusion that ego is the perpetrator of depression and bad thoughts.
In the beginning, Allan Watts inadvertently and unscrupulously knocks out everything you believed or you thought you knew. Then when you wonder how is he going to tidy it up, he ends with a bang that silences your doubts in him. And then you realize he's a genius without setting out to become one!
As an Oncology and Hospice nurse for decades I'll take being doped up during death. I've seen what people go through when they're not and it's agonizing and terrorizing for those whose families deny them narcotics.
After Skool’s conceptual artistry is mind blowing! Alan Watts thus illustrated, adds clarity to his profound insights with symbolic visuals perfectly matched.

wow. you just made my day. Thank you!!!
First of all, I absolutely love your artwork and the way you enhance these excellent lectures. As to the subject matter here, I suppose I am one of the fortunate ones who has always accepted the fact that death is inevitable, and have had no fear of it going as far back as when I was a 6 year old and first experienced the death of someone very close to me. As I always tell people "I am not afraid to die, and if it were to happen tomorrow I'd be OK with it, but I am not doing anything to necessarily hasten the process because I also like my life." However, if I were ever to get some kind of terminal diagnosis I would take the quickest, most pain-free path to the end, because if I can't be active and feel good, there is no point in being alive. I have also had the end of life discussion with a parent and a grandparent, so the scenario he talks about around the 5:00 mark is something I've not had to deal with. While those deaths were sad, we in the family did have the "it's OK to go" discussion. I am surprised and dismayed when I hear that people can't or refuse to do that with a loved one who is near death. I've told my family I won't be waiting around to hear that from them, because I already know it's OK, but some people really need to hear that before they let go, and it's cruel to withhold that.
Thank you, the sad thing is that there are families, like mine, that are not bad really but can't or didn't talk with me about the fundamental aspects of life. Now I've come to realise that the more I actually inform myself about those topics and the more I dig and think about it the more I accept it and actually see the real value of life and existence. Still I couldn't let go of the fear cause there is still a lot that I would like to do and be but I've at least come to a point where I'm thankful for every day and life itself
I’m mad the thing I can’t get out of my head is how that old man blinking scared the crap out of me. ❤️ the video!

Thank you!
Joining the field of oncology with the mindset that dying is a good thing might not be the best idea. From what I understood from this video, we should just let nature follow its course and let the patient die of cancer soon enough. Why bother trying? lolz

The imposition of a proposed expiration date on life can be a liberating divine discovery; especially when learning of a looming end invokes deeper awareness & appreciation of literally every aspect of life- rather than to waste away remaining time with unnecessary & _distractive_ worries over impending "doom".
If you live to grow old and die of natural causes then you have experienced life but if death comes too soon and you die sudden, unexpectedly and it is a tragic death...then you suffered in your life and that death is not what you willfully accept as part of life. So you struggle to survive to stay alive.
To grow old and die old is to die gracefully
Maybe that's why we have to remember that death may come today and live fully in the moment.

I am not scared of death. What I am scared of is dying. The process, I mean. With agonizing gasps and all. Dying with physical pain, unless I am lucky enough to die in my sleep. And what if chronic illness leads me to death? The pain of suffering the illness for years + the last agonizing gasps of death... it is these things that worry me. No amount of philosophy can make you escape this grim (and highly possible) reality. I have seen a person in my family dying after living for years in constant physical pain. The pain tolerance of humans is very weak, I tell you. It takes just one toothache to drive all positive philosophies out of your mind. You then rush for a painkiller, pop it, get relief after about an hour, and then relapse into your life-is-beautiful-and-worth-living philosophy again.

Death is only sad for the living. The dead do not feel sad, we all avoid death to make life for the living less sad. But what is so terrific about life? At best life is equal parts hardship and enjoyment, even though most of us don't experience it as positive as that. Shouldn't we want it to end at some point? Doesn't the idea that all of this trouble will come to an end comfort you?

Wow that line about devouring everything and not returning to the earth to be devoured is really telling of human nature
Jay Bisky that line is actually flawed and clearly untrue - but serves as an easy point to make about the greed or supposed ego/supremacy of mankind. Our efforts to preserve our bodies posthumously are feeble in the grand scheme of time, even the ancient Egyptians were only able for preserve for thousands of years and poorly, which when talking of the natural order isn’t long at all (to put that in context universe is 13.4 billion years and earth 4+ billion years) so in the grand scheme of things we humans do return ourselves...every atom back to the universe to be recycled...hardly hoarding when you really think about it.
kwamewins yea but we ourselves don’t view it that way that’s the reason we have cemeteries so we can pay respects to a corpse when in reality we could use a giant gasifier and make methane from decaying corpses
Coming to the conclusion that I will never understand it or how it all works is one of the most oddly satisfying and freeing feelings ever.

I think it is brilliant the way your 'cartoonimations' bring the great thinkers to people who otherwise might not care.
disagree with his supposition. You do not loose the wonder of the natural world smply because you become older. In the right envionment it only grows with age.
You do though even if it’s beyond your choice, the innate curiosity that comes with being a child and not knowing about the world goes away even if you don’t think it has because you become comfortable with life and your surrondings
John benedetto is right... you’re stripped of your innocence day by day as a child and eventually innocence is turned into a callice. I believe you’re confusing appreciation with wonder and innocence
That's what he said
I agree with you,you don't have to loose the wonder of the natural world if you don't want to.There are endless things to learn if you want to learn um.But most people give in to social pressure to make that money and be successful and they forget about the things that really matter.
Great video as always and incredible drawing. His wisdom is so much like that of Buddha, we care more bringing new life yet don’t respect the concept of death nor its meaning.
