- Lucinda David is an international debater and adjudicator, having participated in prestigious competitions in Asia, Australia and Europe, and was the Chief Adjudicator of the World Universities Debate Championships 2012, hailed as Olympics of debating. Lucinda is currently the Debate Director of the Lund Debate Society and one of the forces behind developing competitive, academic debating in Sweden. Her advocacy is mainly driven by her belief in reclaiming public discourse and promoting free speech by running weekly debate cafes and organizing workshops and debates on varied topics and issues critical the community at large. In her talk she describes how debating can change your life.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

A very insightful speech. Joining the debating club was the best choice I have ever made in my life. It completely changed my life. I used to a painfully shy girl who lets people walk all over her. Debate gave the the courage to speak up and to speak out. Debate opened many doors for me and connected me to opportunities.

Great! I am a debater and debate really helped me to be contextualized into the world. It really made it clear why I should read and write and be an active part of the world. The last part about being kind really resonance with me because I know that debating is empowering me to be kind and not to be limited by provincial or selfish thinking.
Well said! We need to encourage critical thought and ways to convey those thoughts verbally. There's way too much BS floating around these days spewed forth by people who refuse to think more than 5 seconds and would completely fail to defend their arguments if challenged to a debate.
Let's see if any of those people (read: trolls) will try to drown the comment section with their "enlightening" thoughts.

That, was the BEST SPEECH, I HAVE EVER SEEN! Congratulations to Lucinda Davis for all that she is now today. And most importantly, ALWAYS WAS AND WILL BE.
You probably don't remember me anymore. But you came to Bangladesh once in NSU and you gave an equally awesome speech there. And then...you met us all with smiling, happy faces. And you made me 2nd in a speech competition, apparently! :P And if you still haven't recognized....oh then I have to show you a picture that I snapped of us then! :D
Debating is defined by this simple sentence Speak-up Speak-out. It takes a courage to say what you think on, and I salute your courage to go in a danger zone and debating with people there. We can resolve many things through debating. Me too I start learning debating for the sake of my ideas and feelings. I started that with the members of my family by creating a space of debating and thinking. I allow my sister a space to talk with me, and I encourage her to do so and that has well return on me, in my work I debate not a lot with my colleagues because we work. However, that changed my life. We can't accept to live under a unique thinking we are thinkable beings, we need a space in the outside of our minds to create a connection between people and what allow that is just debating our ideas. Society can't make any progress if its people don't see things differently. The world is not unique it is diverse and it is unique in its diversity.
