I still remember meeting Mackey and Malani for the first time at the Waikiki Shell. My friend John, Mackey's nephew, took us backstage after the concert to meet them. They were super cool and down to earth. Years later my friends and I went to listen to Mackey play at the Juice Bar? (old Kengo's) on Kapiolani Blvd. He hung out after the gig to talk story with us. We asked if he would take a listen to our demo that we had just finished recording with Kirk Thompson. He took it and gave us his number and told us to give him a call. The following week we called him and he invited us up to his house. He was so generous with his time giving us feedback on our demo. We talked story, listened to music, and laughed a lot. He even gave us a "sneak peek" listen to some of his new songs coming out on the next album. As we were leaving he invited us to come back with our guitars to jam. Good times! Though he had many dark struggles, as many of us do, I could always tell that he was a kind person with a good heart. You can feel it in his music and I can say after spending some time with him that you could feel it just being around him. It's good to know that both Malani and Mackey found salvation in Jesus! Mahalo braddahs for the music and the memories!
I visited Mackey performing solo. I'm from the mainland. It was magic. Amazing how many hit songs he created. He was 'down to earth'. Humble & kind. I still admire him to this day & for all time.
I known Mackey since we were 12 years old . We hung together for years when we were growing up . He's got a heart of gold and is tough as nails also . I played Pop Warner football with him and he's a good athlete. His family are all good people I know his brothers and sisters and love them too . We were all so proud of him and so sad when he passed . I went through a period of depression thinking how could I have helped him and why I didn't try harder to check on him . He's with God for sure he told me in my dreams when he stopped by to visit . Rest in peace Mac save me a place in the jam up there . God bless !!
Thanks for sharing! Good to hear from someone who grew up with Mackey from small kid time. I'm friends with his nephew and niece and was blessed to have met Mackey and hang out and talk story with him several times at gigs and at his house. He def had a heart of gold and yes we will see him again in heaven!
I flew regularly from California & always took in the sounds of Mackey & Malani. Gone are the days when they brought so much beauty into the world. They are Hawaii. I still listen to all their songs today. I miss them terribly. Mackey was just too cool. His voice still resonates like no other. Thanks for posting. Took me back to good times.
Yup gone are the days... the music nowadays is just not the same. So good that you could fly in and catch their gigs, nothing like hearing them "live". I'm so glad I kept these vhs recordings of them, not knowing at the time that they would be gone too soon and that one day there would be a platform like youtube to be able to share it and keep their memory alive. Aloha braddah🤙
Here it is 2022 and re-discovering Kalapana's music again is so soothing! Mackey had a rugged, but gorgeous look about him, and when he sang, it was the voice of an angel! How we were blessed that he shared his vocal and musical talent with us with such heartwarming and heartbreaking songs. He's jamming now with Malani, DJ and all the other rock icons in Rock and Roll Heaven!!
I had the privilege of meeting Mackey at Kalihi Union Church’s Men’s Ministry. He loved God and also used his songwriting gifts to glorify and give praise to the Lord. Shared with us a song he wrote about his love for Christ. It was awesome and inspiring.
Awesome you were in ministry with him. Didn't know he went to Kalihi Union. His Forever and One Day album has songs he wrote glorifying the Lord. I wonder if one of those is the song he shared with you guys. Be blessed braddah!
Mackey was visiting that one evening. Thanks for sharing about his album One Day and Forever! Never heard those songs before. If I remember correctly, the song he shared with us wasn’t recorded yet and he passed away shortly after. Such an awesome talented and gifted man he was.
Mackey and I were best of friends back in the early '90's. We worked together as skycaps at the airport. The airport would play "Moon and Stars" and I pointed at Mackey to let the passenger(s) know that he was singing the song. His airport badge had his real name Bryant. Locals would ask him if he was Mackey Feary and he would say "no that's my brother". Crazy stories I can tell you. Because I was with him and wearing the same airport polyester aloha shirts and going to different hang-outs. I was considered local instead of haole. I met Danny Kaleikini because Mackey and I were at T'Bones (long gone) in Mōʻiliʻili. As I look back I wish had appreciated his music more than I did. After all these years I still miss him. He is in my dreams often. Some good. Some bad.
Thank you for your stories. I thirst for stories about Mackey especially happy ones. It breaks my heart to think he was a lonely man 😥 please do share some more please !

Two with broken wings will fly forever
So many memories Kalapana will always be my surfing days at Diamond Head then heading to Rainbows for mix plate grinds
