PHENOMENALLY TALENTED! Kalapana was and is the number one best Contemporary Hawaiian bad ever. Too bad Mackey Feary is gone...he was a uniquely talented singer with one of the most beautiful voices in music ever. LOVE how the guys are jamming in this video.
One of the greatest Hawaiian bands, and the greatest instrumental ever! Black sand by Kalapana! Grew up with the songs and sounds of them in the '70's and '80's!
Michel Paulo is very great sax player. Just seen him play with kalapana on utube. He"s a wicked sax player. Love kalapana tunes, listening to their music everyday..Mackey did have a beautiful voice, wish it would of not ended for kalapana..RIP u r missed...
malani is my uncle, and his music at family parties , is always a joy, i often listen to his music when I'm down which has been daily. i hope that you too will sing my fave "naturaly" when its my time to be with grandma adams, pa adams and pa kaleiwahea
Sorry, that's not Michael Paulo on sax, it's Colin Katada from Hilo. Another tragic story: not sure when, but some time after this show, I learned that he was bipolar and stopped taking his meds. He went into a depression, and took his own life. He was great player, wasn't he? Colin Katada, we miss you.
@@jeffdeponte Thank you for enlightening me about Colin Katada. I think I was looking at another video of Kalapana, as Sir Michael Paulo did once play with Kalapana, and by mistake, posted on the wrong video. My mistake. That is tragic, isn't it, about Colin Katada. I am so sorry. Thank you for your knowledge of all you have discussed with me. May Katada be at peace now, and may God continue to bless you with great knowledge and intelligence.
@@scarlet8select696 I once spoke with Gaylord Holomalia about Colin. He told me that Colin was a bit younger than the rest of the band, and that it had been his dream to become part of Kalapana. He idolized them! He achieved his dream. Rest in peace...
This is one of my all-time favorite KALAPANA jams which I've used for many of my Hawaiian videos. I hope to make it to their reunion at CECILIO & KAPONO's 35th Anniversary "Back in Da Day" concert at the Waikiki Shell on August 23!
That's Kenji Sano on bass and Gaylord on keyboard. This was the time when Kenji and Gaylord joined Kalapana in the 80's. you may visit the kalapana's facebook fan page to get to know the members better. And visit wikipedia for better info, srhs420.
and for me, I don't THINK that I am right and you are wrong - I am SURE that you are wrong about Kenji on bass and Gaylord on keyboards. sorry, but you deprive the guys of the recognitions due them. I am a Kalapana fan from age 11, and I've been listening to them for nearly three decades, as I hear and read some members and sidemen come and go. I am not commenting on what I don't know or what I am not a hundred % sure. I only speak of what I am sure of.

Kalapana could have possibly have been the greatest local group or band of all time!!!!

Fantastic live performance of a legendary jam. 🤙🏽
Great!! This is one of the most important part of my "Immortal Instrumentals" playlist.
Saw them in concert back 1999 at peseo park Guam USA great band
Timeless... still one of my favorite songs!
Watching these Kalapana performances gives me a chance to see more of the Michael Paulo videos. Even in the old days, Paulo was a king.

@@jeffdeponte That is so nice of you to inform me of this information. I will read more about Colin, as you have definitely pricked my curiosity.
@@jeffdeponte If you recall, Michael Paulo did play with Kalapana at one time though.
DJ is still smoking on that guitar...his sound and style had a tone all its own...distinctive just like Carlos Santana...
Look at everyone's faces in the beginning, how genuinely stoked they are. That's the sign of real music!!
