      Amazing word choice, and with highly impressive emotional composure. But here's a question: what would you do if at the final point of navigation you were pointed at meaningful automobile traffic? So it came down to your life vs. whoever you might crush or kill from the chain reaction on the ground? Luckily he threaded through what he first sensed was significantly dense automobile traffic. What if he hadn't had a hole to squeeze into? Would you veer to the median or the shoulder? And would it make a difference if you were carrying 160 souls, vs. only one?

But if you where on a large jet full of people I think you have to just land it and risk others. I would like to think I would sacrifice myself if I was a sole pilot if the road was full. But who knows in that moment. Great question 👍🏻👍🏻

    Let's not forget to praise Foreflight for all they offer to us GA pilots. Enabling the glide advisory feature can be the difference between a forced landing or a stretched glide/stall scenario. In this case, it really helped him and his ADM. Instances like this are why I love the aviation community -- we're all here to help one another.

    • @VASAviation
      @VASAviation  4 года назад +67

      Decision to land on a road must be very difficult to make but this guy did it and he survived without hurting anyone on the ground. Should he has tried the runway and the crash could have been worse.

    • @ckeilah
      @ckeilah 4 года назад +2

      T. Burns did the debrief prove his decision to be correct, or could he have made the runway, even slightly short, and landed safely?

    • @burnn3
      @burnn3 4 года назад +39

      @@ckeilah That's a good question, but hindsight is always 20/20. Looking back there will always being something that could've been done better. It's also important to note that Foreflight is a FAA-approved resource. While it won't prevent you from receiving a deviation from the FAA or an investigation from the NTSB, it is highly regarded as the prime tool in the NEXGEN general aviation world. I've personally tested the glide advisory ring while flying in a Cirrus SR20-G2 from 8500ft it's pretty accurate--so accurate that it even accounts for wind in its visual presentation of glide distance. While I am all in favor of trusting one's eyes to judge the distance of a glide, the FAA or NTSB would probably rather hear you used a trusted resource as a back-up vs. just eye-balling it. With that being said, I emphasis that it's assisting his ADM, not replacing it. Also, I did not read the NTSB or any debrief reports... I am just a CFI/CFII/MEI ramblin'.

      Half the time the two aircraft were talking to different controllers (tower and NorCal) and in different classes of airspace. Note the airport/tower only controls up to 2,600 ft and the following Cessna was above that most of that time. Once near the airport the tower may/will call traffic advisories for aircraft in the same airspace, but since Modesto is class D airspace (think no or limited radar) the pilots flying in visual conditions still have responsibility for separation.

      There was a GA pilot quite a few years ago that had engine failure over a forested area and crashed. Had friends with him with some injuries so pilot decided to walk out for help. A couple of hours later he was picked up by rescue chopper (looking for his aircraft) and he directed them back to the crash site. Unfortunately the chopper clipped trees on approach to the site and went down with him on board, but he walked away from that one as well! 2 crashes in one day and still upright!

    The way the prop was bent... it was not turning, or was slowly windmilling when it hit the pavement.

    • @andreabrignoli8470

      Gliding does not mean the propeller stops.
      The propeller stops if:
      1- Engine seized.
      2- Propeller is feather.
      3- The Airspeed is very low (generally about stall speed or less)
      Otherwise the drag will turn the propeller.
      Especially on a single engine, Variable Pitch propeller when the engine fails the system try to bring the propeller on the fine pitch so the air will turn the propeller and help to restart the engine.
      And when this happens the propeller is in windmilling

      Single-engine piston-powered aircraft (with the exception of a few powered sailplanes) do not have propeller feathering capability. Feathering a prop means changing the pitch to the lowest drag position (leading edge straight ahead). Multi-engine aircraft all have feathering available to minimize the drag on the engine-out side (adverse yaw). This allows aircraft controllability. Engine failure in a piston engine aircraft usually results in a stopped propeller, regardless of what caused the failure (seizure or not).

    Hello VASAviation. This past Saturday, Oct. 12, I was at the Atlanta Airshow where a Canadian Snowbird jet crashed ~7 miles west of the show at KHMP. The crash happened about 1:27 pm Eastern Time. The pilot ejected safely, and wanted to know if you could find any ATC audio that may have been involved. I jets were on their way to the show from KFFC. Thank you!

  • @Xanthopteryx

    This makes me smile - not the crash, but how everybody got involved in a very nice way. The pilot stating the problem and then thinking out his mouth (what he was planning to do), the other plane just without questioning going in to help looking, the casual laid back talk (with a bit of, important, chit chat on the frequency), the willing to help each other out and just - everything!
    The only bit i really dislike is this "Declaring an emergency". We have two GREAT and CLEAR ways of doing this: PAN-PAN and MAYDAY. Please, use it!
    Engine running rough but seems to work out fine: "PAN-PAN" and then when it gets more serious just "MAYDAY". Wen used correctly, there is no confusion on how serious it is and everyone knows what to deal with.
    BTW: In Sweden, giving the guy a ride to the airport (if not in need for an ambulance ride) would be a no brainer - of course the police will do that. But, in this kind of impact (also with cars) we like to take people to hospital for a checkup. You never know what hides inside your body because all the adrenaline and everything makes you feel good even if you are having neck injuries or internal bleeding or something. Better safe than sorry.

    • @Xanthopteryx

      @@VASAviation And PAN-PAN and MAYDAY is ICAO standard. ICAO recommends the use of that instead of "Declaring emergency" or other alternatives since the use of other phraseology has caused confusions and error handling in distress situations.

    Wonderful work on all sides (except possibly of the mechanic, if the fault turns out to have been something missed on inspection)
    however, I am concerned how much pressure/workload the controller puts on the N64048 pilot, who is clearly in extreme emotional-distress which is reducing his capacity to fly the plane (he was amazingly professional but he was definitely distracted by 'outside of cockpit events' knew it, & signaled to the tower that he was in a less then ideal frame of mind a number of times)...
    given that he was clearly less then comfortable with how his mental state was effecting his performance, should he have declared some form of a Pan Pan (what at sea is called a 'securite' or 'Potential-Mayday-Watch')... I see he tries to explain his state of mind indirectly, but the Controller (also under stress) fails to catch onto it....
