"Confusing what is real" is the last lyric and then the girl realizes that there was nothing going on. It was all in her head. This song is so incredibly relatable to many people who experience PTSD and forms of anxiety arising from trauma. Our brains really do try to make stuff up in our heads..it's insane.
This song is said to have a special meaning to Chester especially, since its lyrical content is based on his own life experiences. And due to such, he reportedly got emotional when he was called upon to perform "Crawling" live. While listening to Linkin Park's "Crawling", it becomes obvious that the narrator is dealing with a serious situation. The lyrics read as if he is inflicted with some sort of internal dilemma. And this dilemma ultimately results in "too much pressure", 'confusion', 'insecurity' and other unfavorable conditions. But what exactly serves as the source of these issues is open to the interpretation. This song manifests that nasty feeling that something is crawling under your skin. Much of the lyric delivered by Chester Bennington deals with the side effects of taking methamphetamines - a drug he used throughout his teens. The anxiety, hallucinations and a feeling of things crawling under his skin. The song, though, can apply to anyone feeling uncomfortable and helpless. In the video, the girl (played by Katelyn Rosaasen) is physically abused by her father. At the beginning, we can see all her bruises. Many of the lyrics demonstrate how hard it is to break the cycle of abuse ("These wounds, they will not heal" and "It's haunting, how I can't seem to find myself again, my walls are closing in"), and how self-confidence is crushed. The blue crystal background closes in on her at the beginning of the first chorus - this shows an emotional shell that she has built around her. The thick make-up is like a mask, trying to hide what's going on inside. The septum ring is designed to link with Chester's lip ring. When the girl walks away from her boyfriend, it's because she's too scared to get close to people. This is also true for the high school bathroom scene. When Chester sings, "Against my will I stand beside my own reflection," he and Katelyn are looking at each other. She looks like she wants to get out of the shell she's in. She also sees painful memories from her past in the crystal. When the second chorus starts, the crystal begins to break and chunks of it are flying about - this is her shell falling down. It represents her father's departure, as does her smiling at the end with the roses in the vase. She's not wearing the thick make-up because she doesn't feel like she needs the protection of a mask - she's got nothing to hide from.
It was devastating when Chester passed away, he was so young at the age of 41. It ended an era of music. Thankfully we have people that are seeing and hearing him for the first time, let's keep great music alive!! Thx bro for your genuine reaction to this great band that had an entire generation in they're hands.
Mike Shinoda is the other singer. He’s done a lot of solo work recently. Post Traumatic was an album he released in the wake of Chester’s death and it is fantastic. The singles he’s been releasing lately have also been on point.
Love all the Linkin Park songs. I just keep giving options (there is so much more) for you. Would love to see 'What I've Done' one of there biggest hits :)
Digging into what this song is about and writing it down will probably become a literary journal 😅 But here is the gist of it. In one of the interviews, Chester explains : “It’s easy to fall into that thing - ‘poor, poor me’, that’s where songs like ‘Crawling’ come from: I can’t take myself. But that song is about taking responsibility for your actions. I don’t say ‘you’ at any point. It’s about how I’m the reason that I feel this way. There’s something inside me that pulls me down.”
The live version of this on RUclips (black and white thumbnail) is so moving. It’s slow, intimate, and brooding knowing his life ended the way it did 😢
Man, i’m just one minute into the video but as a lifelong LP fan, i’m amazed how you were able to put into words, the tiny cringe feeling that listening to Linkin Park has. The quality of their music is as strong as the lyrical and emotional depth of their songs and as you say, “you gotta have the apetite to feel a little melancholy” is exactly what that is. And sure thing we all can relate to that. Great choice of words here. I’ll continue watching now
Please react to What I've done by Linkin Park, next. Mike Shinoda is the other co-singer/rapper/producer/multi-instrumentalist/graphic-designer and the band called him "The Glue" If you wanna hear more from Mike Shinoda, I recommend listen to his side project Fort Minor - Where'd you go
It’s not melancholic music. It’s pretty therapeutic to sing/yell with Chester and the guys. They won a Grammy for this. His family and friends did see it coming and helped him so many times. It’s hell living with an alcoholic and it only worsens when you add suicidal ideations. It becomes impossible to be with them every single second of the day. I’ve been there.
It’s really difficult too try and explain it to people that may not understand it, from my own experience cutting was a way to feel something as for many years from events etc all my senses were shattered and felt nothing for many years. Sadly this can be a desperate attempt to simply feel something. Much love to everyone ❤️
In the music video she was being abused and by the end of it her abuser left and she was happier. For Chester it hints at what Chester went through as a child as well as the fact that he abused himself with drugs and alcohol addiction to deal with the mental pain of the abuse. Chester was abused by an older boy who he thought was his friend. Chester wrote most of the lyrics to this song to help deal with his feelings in a healthier manner than doing drugs. Chester used music to help him deal with his feelings and it is what helped him to live as long as he did. Music was just 1 of his therapies to deal with his mental health problems. Chester loved the fact that his songs helped the fans as well because it helped them to know that they are not alone in what they feel. Chester didn't want anyone to feel like they are alone in dealing with mental health problems. It helps to know that others are also dealing with the same problems in life because then you are not the only crazy person.
To the reactor .. remember this quote from Bruce Lee .. the key to immortality is living a life worth remembering.. R.I.P Chester .. great reaction good man 💯✌️🙏❤️
I would love to see your reaction to Wardruna - Raido (a song about his horse). The vocalist in Wardruna said he wants to showcase the old the tradition of when people had songs for everything in their lives. People sang while they worked, before they fought, and in many more contexts where technology has unfortunately taken over the role of entertaining us.
Linkin Park is one of the best bands of this century. They are also one of the most empathetic bands, possibly ever. They created Music For Releief - a program that helps countries and families rebuild after natural disasters. Maybe you dont like their music (how can you not), but they also literally care about other people. Does your favorite band do that?
