One of the things I liked the most about Arcane is how hard the female cast carries the show. We have all these women, all different, all of them showing strength and agency in their own ways, without falling into stereotypes, without having to make them shine by making the male cast stupid, but just because they are great characters, with motivations, fears, flaws, skills, and goals. I hope that other shows take note of this and let us enjoy richer and more representative characters.

    • @jonesjeremiah
      @jonesjeremiah 2 года назад +207

That is what is so refreshing about this show. So many of these new shows who try to be woke and write these feminist female characters just don't get it. It is not about being male or female it is not about political correctness, sexism or equality it is just about writing good and realistic characters. Their gender, race and sexuality doesn't matter at all we can have empathy to all of them because their motives and actions are so believable. It is amazing how well they executed this.

    • @PIRATER0B0TNINJA
      @PIRATER0B0TNINJA 2 года назад +154

@@jonesjeremiah I mean...representation *does* matter. The problem is token representation, where characters are added to tick off boxes on some kind of "woke checklist" to create the illusion of representation, rather than just creating a diverse cast of rich characters from the outset. Arcane is perfect because its cast of characters is both diverse *and* extremely well-developed. You can quibble that Ekko got a short shrift, but he still had some very prominent moments and has clearly been set up with a role and an arc for Season 2.

The dialogue that Silco says “Is There anything more undoing as a daughter?” Is One of the most important ones and also applies to all of the parents on This show.
•Ambressa exiled Mel just because she could not handle her daughter’s dissapointment in making the hard choices
•Markus stuck being Silco’s Lapdog for the stability of his daughter, even when he wanted to end with Silco far ago.
•Vander betrayed Silco in order to stop a War with Piltover and to take care of his adoptive sons and daughters.
•And Lastly Silco, he was definitely going to give up his dream and work of a lifetime of making Zaun an indepedent nation, just because he couldn’t abandon nor betray his daughter in order to do so.
    That’s powerful Writing.

The Vander thing is your own assumption and I've talked at length in other places how I don't think that's what happened at all.
Vander was willing to give himself up for Vi and returned to violence to protect her. That was Vander's thing, not betraying Siloc cause it's implied Vander didn't do that for a noble reason, if you think about, it actually makes no sense that that was the reason.

    • @lockekappa500

Even if its because Vander made a deal with the enforcers and Silco wouldnt back down in his aggression towards Piltover so Vander had to backstab him to "ensure the peace" Regardless I still think Vanders daughters were his undoing, for better or for worse. He literally dies trying to save Vi jumping out a brick wall, when he could have easily stayed and killed Silco and probably lived.

I'm saying Vander and Silco were in the same side and show blatantly shows that Vander wasn't a good person before adopting the kids, and he doesn't deny it. Vander knows what he did to Silco was wrong, he doesn't deny it. Silco became the way he is because if what Vander did to him. Also Vander found his humanity on that bridge with Vi and Powder. Deciding "hey I'm not going to fight anybody cause our people aren't worth dying for this" then immediately going "ANYWAY gonna murder my brother for not agreeing with me" quite literally makes no sense. He clearly became non-violent after adopting the kids, he never got violent when the whole bar wanted to fight, he didn't even fight back when he was sure he was gonna die, why would he have gone to try to violently murder Silco right after establishing the new moral that no death is worth is, Vander even asks if anyone was hurt on topside he doesn't even want topsiders to die anymore, him trying to kill Silco AFTER that revelation makes no sense.

That moment where Jinx is holding the minigun over Cait and Vi tries to snap her out of it by bringing up their family is brilliant, and shows that Vi and Silco both know a different girl. Vi thinks that reminding Powder about their family will snap her out of it but only ends up, unknowingly, just causing a lot more pain to Jinx because that family is literally the thing that haunts her and is the core of her trauma and bringing it up makes her just go deeper and deeper into despair. Silco, on the other hand, knows that these are the ghosts that haunt Jinx and moves to protect her (notice that he only starts to struggle against his bindings and go for the gun to shut Vi up after Jinx is clearly in distress). Both Silco and Vi tried to help the girl they knew, Jinx and Powder respectively.

Also I doubt that Jinx could have ever gone back to Vi. Vi loved Powder not Jinx, their sisterly love is no longer unconditional (which don’t get me wrong, her sister became a homicidal Sociopath with a high body count) but I think Vi is semi afraid of Jinx.
Basically Vi couldn’t accept Jinx when she’s helping. Silco excepted Jinx when she killed him as to him she is the embodiment of Zaun wild and chaotic but beautiful underneath.
On the other Vi could except Powder, but Silco couldn’t because he views Powder as basically the opposite of how he views Zaun

Zaun and Piltover could have been equal partners in something great. But Piltover instead broke the undercity and forced its citizens to become dependent on them, while they slowly suffocated.
It's a lamentation of Zaun as Jinx as its manifestation blows up the peace talks, but it still lies the blame at Piltover's feet. It's like a mirror to 'Friend Across the River'. Rather than asking for a pittance and begging for dignity, Zaun cries out through this song that it will no longer accept the hurt and both laments and rejoices in how Piltover finally has to suffer a blow as grievous once as it inflicted regularly upon Zaun's people.

I don't think he wants Jinx dependent on him, I think he wants her independent. He loves the part of her that is Jinx, and everything else. Vi and Vander can't love that part. I still maintain that Silco, in his final moments, was defending Jinx. He saw what Vi was doing to her, even if she didn't, or just didn't realize she was making it worse. He wasn't playing tug of war, trying to bring her back to him. He pulled that gun and tried to shoot her to stop her from hurting Jinx. He was a broken, deranged, and psychotic, but he loved that girl more than anything.

Also, you were mentioning how the Shimmer definitely enhanced her? They hinted at that when she brought out the platter too, because these writers don't miss a single detail. Jinx was wearing both gauntlets while doing so, even though the right gauntlet was broken and it should have been impossible for her to lift it like that. We saw Jayce struggle with it without the crystal and Vi took it off. We also saw Jinx shake out that wrist when she dropped the gauntlet. Great reaction! It’s crazy to think the guys that create VI and Jinx almost 10 years ago made this masterpiece with no tv experience! After the typical shopping around Hollywood, Riot took a chance and let these guys do it themselves. They love their creations so much and it shows. They also built this incredible relationship with the animation studio Fortiche that began with the music vid “Get Jinx” which unveiled Jinx. That studio has done tons of shorts in the past 9 years in different styles and love LOL characters. Arcane animation is ridiculous.
Arcane was the barometer to see if they could do series about their game and if people enjoyed it. They got their answer pretty quick lol. Season 2 won’t take nearly as long. They explained how having ZERO experience created tons of issues and roadblocks as they learned. Also they took their time casting voice actors they felt fit their characters. The VA’s are amazing. Even the child VA for Powder was like 13 and crazy good (that scene where Vi leaves her!)
Btw if you need a little more of VI and Caitlyn and a tease how they fight together … check out league of legends Warriors animated short 2020 ( you’ll love it). Can’t wait for more from them - so many really interesting characters in the world they created.

The finale is what I like to call, "How everyone failed to help Jinx". Everyone at that dinner party failed Jinx in their own way.
First we have Cait. The thing I love about Cait is her compassion and empathy despite her upbringing. How she hugged Huk and her partnership with "her good friend" Vi were prime examples. Here however, she failed to see the hurting sister of Vi who needed help and could only see the criminal Jinx who was "To far gone". Her law enforcement instincts were out in full force. Not completely her fault with her being kidnapped but still.
Second was Silco. Silco is a bad man, but not the worst father. He's an active listener, and encouraged Jinx's creativity and genius. However, their relationship is toxic. He does put his own past and demons onto Jinx, feeding her paranoia and abandonment issues.
Finally we have Vi. Vi is an incredible character, but she has some character flaws and they are in full display here. She is a woman of action who solves most of her problems with her fists. She is however unable to handle the volatile nature of her mentally ill sister. During Jinx's hallucination, Vi was unintentionally overloading Jinx despite Jinx telling her to stop. Like Silco (ironically) she's also unable to let go of the past. She wants Powder back, but is unable to accept the young woman in front of her named Jinx. This is what Jinx ment when she said how she hoped Vi could lover her like she use to even though she was different. Say what you want about Silco, but he was mostly correct when he said that Vi would last a day before realizing that Jinx was no longer Powder.
This was a beautiful tragity where every one was right, while being wrong and EVERYONE loses in the end.

I legit don't understand how people act so surprised that Silco legit cared for Jinx thinking all he said was bullshit, their conversations as father to daughter, Silco shown his weak side to Jinx and even how stressed he was when she was not around, take the needle in the eye scene, when Jinx was not around he been so used to have her around him to help him with it, when she was not there it he got stressed like a moment where he did not want to do it at all. he defended Jinx again and again. and the biggest part of how Loyalty was so damn important, he took Jinx under his wing since he knew how it felt to be betrayed and left behind. and Vi was hurting Jinx, Vi amplified Jinx PTSD so damn much, look how there old past family pops up, for Vi it's meaning for remember good but for Jinx dose names show up as monsters that haunts her, and VI keeps calling their names wanting Jinx to be powder so she could be happy sisters again, when it was only hurting Jinx. ++++ that bullshit about Silco = jinx violent did any of you watch the first episodes, theft, fights, death was a everyday when they where kids Powder even made bombs set for killing that in the end almost killed everyone in the building, and she legit happy until she saw that it had also killed her family. and + again she did abandon Jinx, she called her A jinx and hit her, and choose to run away. it was sett she had a choice and ran away, regretting it later dose not mater she took a choice and that sett everything in motion.
and that "peace" was for them getting Jinx life so screw that.

"Vi never abandoned her" - that's something I always think about from Silco's perspective. Yes, we know Vi tried to get back to her. But Silco never saw that. He thought she was dead for years, only to learn she was alive while Jinx was left to his care.
For all we know, he totally believed* Vi abandoned Jinx like Vander did to Silco.
So technically speaking, it's very possible he wasnt trying to manipulate Jinx with that, and was instead speaking from what they both believe. He saw himself in her because she was left alone and defenseless after someone she cared about turned against her.
Silco genuinely cared for Jinx. While on one hand, yeah, he didn't help her much at all with her mental health, he did treasure her over his own dream.
In the scene where he talks to Vander's statue, he says "It all makes sense now brother. Is there anything so undoing as a daughter?"
This moment is crucial, because it's showing us that he understands why Vandor fought for Vi and Powder. He now knew the struggles of being a father and being willing to give up everything for Jinx.

Silco was the one who sent Marcus to kill Vi. he though Vi was dead because he was the one who sent Marcus to kill her. its not that he didn't see Vi go back after Jinx. Rather he did what he could to ensure that Vander's entire family was gone, in fact, scene where Jinx hugs him very much suggests that he was going to kill Powder as well, he just changes his mind because he realizes he could use someone who is capable of creating the kind of bombs that Powder made even as young as she was - and who immediately attached herself to him. he could build up her loyalty to him and use her as his weapon. that he ends up growing genuinely attached in return even WHILE doing all of the manipulating - is an outcome that he didn't expect. but he didn't adopt Powder out of the goodness of his heart or any sort of relating to her situation and he absolutely did NOT care for her back then.

One of the best parts of the show is that Jinx literally "jinxs" everything. Like she is THE problem, that's what everyone around Silco have been telling him. But he loved her too much and just ignored it (in his own twisted way, but he did love her).
Jinx literally killed both of her "fathers". And when Silco told her she was perfect even though she killed him? Yeah, that was it.
    1) Jinx has gave up and just accepted the fact she brings chaos and trouble
    2) She did realise that Silco truly loved her

  • @SilverGallowglass
    @SilverGallowglass Год назад +9

Two lines that aren't fully included that are super important to this scene:
"I never would have given you to them. Not for anything. Don't cry. You're perfect."
I know you don't understand or like Silco, but these lines are his final words and importantly, his last words to Jinx after she shot him.
You could see it as a double-down on whatever and an assurance of his innocence in betraying her.
But these are his last words, what happens next, he'll never live to see. He has no ability to gain anything, because anything gained will not serve him in any way. And what do these lines actually do?
They clarify that he wasn't gonna betray her and chose her over his life-long dream for the nation of Zaun. They reassure her. They tell her she's perfect. They show that despite the fact that she shot and killed him, he isn't mad or resentful. They are in fact some of the most outwardly focused lines he has.
And can I just say for someone as plagued with crippling self-doubt, anxiety and negative self-image as Jinx; for someone whose entire identity is based around the idea that she is a jinx on her loved ones, to have someone tell you that you are perfect is huge. She just shot him and he responds by telling her not to cry and that there is nothing wrong with her.
Now perfection is another thing that can be damaging, don't get me wrong, but it is an absolute (which keeps it in line with the rest of his statement).
"I NEVER would have given you to them. NOT for ANYTHING. DON'T cry. You're PERFECT."
These are all absolutes, things that are meant to leave no room for doubt in her mind (absolutes to combate the constant doubts that manifest in her mind) . He was going to give up his dream for her, because he wouldn't have given her up for anything they could have offered, she doesn't need to cry, there is nothing wrong with her (she is worth giving up his dream).
Looked at objectively, these last two are lies. There is reason to cry and she isn't perfect. But who does this lie benefit? Jinx.
"I thought maybe you could love me like you used to, even though I'm...different"
I have a lot of feelings about this line because of that space. In that space there are a lot of words that could have come next.
This sentiment is very common, especially for mentally ill people, neurodivergent people, queer, and other people who can find themselves othered in their families. The hope that when you reveal yourself in your most authentic state you will still be loved.
I heard the "even though I'm a killer", "even though I've hurt you", "even though I'm crazy", "even though I'm broken" before she settled on different and understood it. Because those others might feel more accurate, but they are hard to say. Different is factual, neutral and it covers everything.
Vi isn't to blame, she is woman who was locked in a box as a child and desperately wants everything to just go back to how things used to be. It is unrealistic, but understandable.
Jinx isn't to blame, she is a damaged woman who is tired of hoping for love and acceptance, tired of hoping for people to not leave her. Even if Vi said everything right, Jinx's mind would just twist it to seeing the worst. Jinx wants love, but would never be able to accept that someone loves her without having doubts.
This moment is when she loses hope that Vi could ever love her, not a past version of her, not "Powder", love her, the version living right now.

If you want to know our pain, when this finished we didn't know whether we were going to have a second season or not. They in fact revealed that S2 was going into production 3 days or so after the finale.
As a League player, I loved this ending because this is more or less where the game lore is currently. I though that it was masterfully done.
What a great show. I have never been more surprised. I was going to watch whatever Riot produced with Fortiche, because they always make great things, so I was expecting something cool. But we got this masterpiece of animation and story telling and since the very first scene I was completely immerse.
I love that people who know about LoL and people who do not have very different experience: Those who know knew that Powder was going to become Jinx, that Viktor was going to mess with the Hexcore, etc. So for us it was like watching a famous play, you know the end, but you are enthralled by the process to arrive there. I was surprised at every turn. And for people who do not know, this is like a a Greek tragedy, with characters sucumbing to their fatal flaws, meeting their destiny on the path to avoid it.
For me, one of the best series (not animated series, but series in general) ever.

Id like to point out that Silco never once lies to Jinx. In his eyes (or eye) Vi DID abandon her because POWDER told him that. He also says she’s dead because Marcus TOLD him. He never manipulated her, if anything all he did was encourage her to embrace herself. Was it self serving? Yes. Was it projecting? Absolutely, but he honestly put all of his care on her. The problem is it encouraged negatives traits in “Jinx,” to manifest. Vi’s mistake was believing Jinx isn’t Powder. When in reality this is who Powder is now. She’s Jinx, but instead of embracing her for what jinx was, Vi had the idea she can have “powder,” back.
Same with in the scene that Vi tells her to remember her family it negatively impacts her. Hell her mental breakdown is what motivates Silco to try and shoot Vi. He sees Jinx in distress and tries to do something.
The sad part about all of this is both Silco and Vi are being genuine, but from each other’s perspectives both are trying to manipulate her. Vi see’s Silco as someone whose taken Powder hostage when he embraced her and felt her pain. And Silco sees Vi as a traitor who wants her sister back but believes she wont be accepted by her.
Thats why when Silco says, “Youre perfect,” he literally had no regrets about taking her in no matter how much trouble she caused. He loved her for who she was not what she could do for him.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Silco may not be the best father there is, but there's no denying that he unconditionally loved Jinx. I can't say the same for Vi as she can't accept the fact that her sister isn't a little girl anymore but her own person with her own thoughts...

    • @TheCarbonCreed
      @TheCarbonCreed 10 месяцев назад

I think the biggest thing Silco gets wrong is believing, unconditionally, what Powder said to him when she was a scared, vulnerable, traumatized 11 year old whose entire family had just died/intentionally hurt her and then left. Because he immediately makes the connection to his experience with Vander, where he felt at his most scared, vulnerable, and traumatized, yet he was an adult who managed to craft an ideological justification for those feelings and then incorporate that into his character, he feels empowered to project that ideology and character onto Powder. He essentially thinks that the reason he found himself in a situation where he was feeling such intense fear and betrayal was because he hadn't learned the lessons he tries to give Jinx early enough.
Now, this is not a benign misunderstanding, and Silco is essentially encouraging Jinx to trap herself in the worldview of a traumatized child and repeatedly re-traumatize herself because he is so myopic about the actual circumstances of her trauma... but it is such a human misunderstanding that it's hard to hate him for it. While there is some merit to Jinx's statement that Silco didn't make Jinx, Vi did (as in, Jinx was a coping mechanism for the only concrete trauma Powder experienced that night, which was at the hands of Vi), really, Jinx could never have existed had there not been a guiding hand who had both an emotional and a material interest in creating her. Silco's entire ideology is about using people, and while his use of Powder manifests as a supportive, loving, father-daughter relationship, he is, at a very basic level, using her as an emotional crutch and a justification for his actions.
He's an insanely good villain, and it is frustrating when people don't give his character the nuanced interpretation it deserves and boil his actions down to manipulating Powder for material ends. But at the end of the day, that is, on a subconscious level at least, what he is doing; he honed his own person through his ideology into a weapon to beat Piltover, and by projecting that ideology onto Powder he is hoping that he accomplishes the same thing, because what father wouldn't want their daughter to feel empowered in the same way they have been. So while he does love her for who she is, he has been actively shaping that. Jinx was not an inevitability, she was the result of an essentially toxic worldview being instilled into a traumatized child, so that love is ultimately tainted. If what you love can only exist because of suffering, yes it's still love, but it's not the kind of unreproachable goodness some people try to characterize his love of Jinx as.

In another perspective, Silco is the one that made independence talks, and the council agree to it posible, in a way the show tells you he was right whit all his bullshit and you need to "become what they fear" and "stop at nothing"
The complexity of his character doesnt stop at being a father figure, but he is, in paralelism, also "the monster you created" in the same way Jinx is, and that is hinted in episode 3, the light and falling from him un the river in the same way the light hits Powder when she was falling, showing those two as villain origin critic momments.
Now, he is an asshole, a terrible person that hurt a lot of people, but he is totally shown as the natural result of the kind of abandonment and abuse the powerfull give to the powerless, and that is seen clearly in real life, i think that is why people say he is if not the best, tied for best character, even when he deserves all the lead comming for him.

Anyone else notice how Vi and Jinx have polar opposite dynamics when it comes to relationships? I feel Vi has a presence that very much causes people around her to want to reach out to her, to help/follow her lead, and/or to get close to her; with her instead then putting up walls and pushing people away, preferring to carry the burden alone. Meanwhile, Jinx constantly feels people are using her and/or abandoning her but fears being alone; with her instead then trying desperately to cling onto those same people (who she thinks are using/abandoning her, btw) by whatever means necessary.
