For the 60s I have to go with the Ali (then Clay) 1st fight with Liston. With that fight Ali’s personality and skill not only allowed him to dominate the boxing world but all sports for that decade.
yes, i agree. this is the one glaring error in this otherwise excellent video. both Patterson and Johanssen are really just footnotes in the history of boxing. Ali's reign, which began with the incredible upset of Liston, was much longer, and his effect on boxing and his skill set were much greater.
Agreed. Bowe was a natural heavyweight, gifted boxer and talented athlete Holyfield was the epitome of what a man can do when he’s naturally undersized.
@@osamashatat -If Bowe had anything like the dedication of Evander Holyfield he would easily have been one of the top 5 heavyweight-champions in history. He was that talented.
That’s how I feel too, his argument for Patterson was a pretty good one.. but Ali’s “i shook up the world” is one of the most iconic moments in sporting history. It has to be number 1 over Patterson’s two time champ achievement, especially because it’s been replicated plenty of times now.
Hey Rummy. As a young boxing novice, I really appreciated the time you took over this video to bring to life the forgotten eras! Respect to you sir! Fascinating stuff
I could go either way and I understand why anyone would say either fights. Both are probably 2 of the 5 most important heavyweight title fights in history.
I always equate Tyson/Douglas with the 80’s, and thus am always surprised when it gets (correctly) placed in the 90’s. That said, this was easily the most significant fight of that decade.
and I always remember that it was dated as Feb 10 for a long time until it was changed to Feb 11, as the fight happened in Japan where the time zone was ahead of us in North America
the biggest upset in boxing history, my man nothing tops that. I don't know how old are you and that is why, because you have no idea idea the aura that Tyson had a that time, the whole world would cheer for him, the whole world thought he was unstoppable, he wasn't only famous in America, just like Ali who was a worldwide sensation so was Iron Mike.
I love this channel, but it's usually always classic boxers and heavyweights, there's a lot of talent out there and there are more weight divisions than just heavyweights and middleweights, i don't want people to get the idea boxing is dead when all people post is long reitred boxers. Thank you for the content Geoffrey❤️
I can name you a dozen channels who focus only on the present, new fighters, future fights. This channel is for people like who appreciate older stuff. I tell people all the time that Rummy is my favorite boxing because he talks a lot about heavyweights and fights from yesteryear
Wowsers, gentlemen Jim broke a few hearts with those shorts.. yikes! What a wonderful history lesson. The most educational channel out here for boxing. Bravo.
I thought the same. Maybe not historically significant as it was just another title defense for Holmes, but definitely the most socially significant fight of the decade.
In the 60's I got to give it to Liston-Ali 1, was the begining of the gold era of HW boxing, 70's goes to Ali-Spinks 2, the ending of the same era; in the 80's I got it to Tyson-Berbick, the start of another 'silver' era, ending in Lewis-Klitschko...
Great video and the thing that pushed it over the top was not just the choices, which were all good, but the digitally enhanced older fights. So great!!!! I don't think I've ever seen the Long Count or Johnson/Jeffries look so clear. Thanks for that.
Even in 1897, I'd have expected somebody to produce a heavyweight much bigger than these men. show's how hard it was to eat enough food for working men.
Right on the very next round. Another footnote with that fight. Tunney was offered like $970,000 for that rematch. He gave the promoter $30,000 so he could get 1 million dollars for that fight!!!
Disagree about the 60's. Patterson regaining the title is significant, but no way is that more significant than Ali beating Liston. One the most historically important wins in boxing history.
1st list i agree with in almost all points. In terms of significance and not quality. The only one where i am split is the 1960s. I recognize the achievement of Patterson, but Ali vs Liston 1 really made history. It made a legend in Ali, and destroyed an unstoppable beast like Liston. So the 1960s was Ali's decade in his prime. Nevertheless, great list.
Thanks for the video! For me the most significant fight of the 1990's is Foreman vs Moorer. Because this is so crazy to imagine. A man after 20 years (even most fighters dont have the career in this longevity) again became the HW champion and the oldest HW champion till this day.
The 1990's 3 Most significant title fights IMO; 1. George Foreman KO 10 Michael Moorer - becoming the oldest boxer at close 46 to win the world championship 20 years after he lost it (1974-1994). 2. James Buster Douglas KO 10 Mike Tyson - Great fight, the biggest underdog story in boxing history and defeating the badest man on the planet. 3. Lennox Lewis UD 12 Evander Holyfield II - First unified & undisputed champion in 7 years in a very competive era. The 2000's 3 most significant title fights: 1. Lennox Lewis KO 8 Mike Tyson - The epiloge of the great 90's era between 2 HOF champions duking it out finaly after many years waiting. Tyson been undefeated since 1997 and had for a long time been the WBC 1# contender but never wanting to fight Lewis at any point prior 2001. Lewis proved once and for all he was the best champion of there great era and Lewis also completed his house cleaning! 2. Lennox Lewis TKO 6 Vitali Klitschko - Lewis was close to 38 years old and cleaned house of his era. Originaly up to face the much non interesting Kirk Johnson, but since he was out due to injury, Lewis accepted with just very short notice Vitalli Klitschko who was on the undercard. Lewis was in career heavierst shape and had trained for a completely different oppopnent. Lewis found he was not the bigger guy here and took some early beating while figuring out he could not box this tough big man. So he goes for dog-fighting and taking the fight to his opponent and Lewis expearince and power proved to change the tide wave as Vitali was gutted and getting his eye damaged in a most nasty eye-cut that eventually stoped the fight in Lewis favour. Lewis proved that despite being old, despite being in bad shape and despite not having properly trained for such dominating opponent, he could still win and defeat a next generation dominating champion in his very prime. 3. Wladimir Klitschko RTD 9 Ruslan Chagaev - There are many Klitschko dominated championship bouts to pick from, but this had a lot of importance for the decade since Lewis retired in April 2004. This was for another step in unifying the crown and originaly all the marbles but the WBC title was to be on the line (WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO) + the vacant Lineal championship, but the WBA choosed to not sanction the fight as a WBA title was not to be Chagaevs anymore (?) due to political issues at the time with Chagev not having fought mandatory and been inactive despite having won the title from Valuev, who instead was again the WBA champion. Klitschko near cleaned the block with this one and only was next to aqquire the WBA title. The WBC title was his brother's property so to speak.
Ya know, the great author Jack London covered the fight between Johnson and Jeffries for some newspaper. I just reread it not long ago while sitting in a doctor's waiting room. Great vid. Thanks for it.
Sonny Liston didnt even get a mention also Holmes Tyson didnt get in, to me that was a passing of the guard and the last we saw of the float like a butterfly style in a heavy weight title fight great video, big fan of Rummys corner

damn, rummy. thank you so much. even though i approve of your reasoning behind each decade’s pic, i am a forever tyson fanboy and still in denial about the triumph of tokyo buster douglas... so i’m gonna just pretend you went with the holyfield/bowe bout and call it all good. and seriously, what a pleasure to go through the history of the division. we really just barely hit the tip of the iceberg! there are so many worthwhile major fights to delve into and stories to explore. boxing history is so rich. i always appreciate your passion for it, thanks so much brother rummy. a true legend. years and years from now, this video will be recognized as the greatest heavyweight boxing youtube video produced in the 2020s 😎
very good video rummy the only selection I disagree with is that I personally would have chosen Ali - Listen 1 for the decade of the sixties but with the evidence you provided for Patterson - Johansson 2, neither would be a bad pick
Patterson regaining the heavyweight title is significant for sure but Ali-Liston 1 is a historical phenomenon, a turning point, almost like the start of modern boxing, it took boxing to the mainstream, now everyday people knew who was the heavyweight champion of the world like they knew the president of the united states.

For the 60s I have to go with the Ali (then Clay) 1st fight with Liston. With that fight Ali’s personality and skill not only allowed him to dominate the boxing world but all sports for that decade.
Yeah, I was surprised it wasn't that.
I think the second fight is the one that should have been put up. Probably the most controversial fight in history and is debated to this day.

Ali's reign, which began with the incredible upset of Liston, was much longer, and his effect on boxing and his skill set were much greater.
I was just about to say that. It sent up the championship reign of the most famous man in the history of boxing and maybe sports
I think Bowe vs Holyfield 1 was the most significant heavyweight bout of the 90s, they were both in their absolute primes and in peak form.
Agreed.
Bowe was a natural heavyweight, gifted boxer and talented athlete
Holyfield was the epitome of what a man can do when he’s naturally undersized.
ok

I’d say you nailed every decade but the 60s. Gotta go with Clay vs Liston 1
Agreed!!
I’d also say the 2010’s fight for me would be Joshua losing to Ruiz
KO-ed in round 21. Wtf is the stamina and heart these guys fought with
1st HW world championship fight was a 75th round bareknuckle KO

No mentioned of Tyson vs Holyfield or Ali vs Liston?
Big step up in technique of fighters from the 1920s to 1930s. Joe Louis was tight and compact while the 20s and before was wild and sloppy.
You must've not known about Benny Leonard
ALways enjoyable, but I'd have Ali/Foreman there. Foreman was a wrecking machine. For me, that fight is why he's "the greatest".
I could go either way and I understand why anyone would say either fights. Both are probably 2 of the 5 most important heavyweight title fights in history.
The top 5 best hw fights in history have Ali. He really is the greatest
