    • @SKBottom
      @SKBottom 10 месяцев назад +1

      Not when people faithfully making payments for years end up owing even more than they did than when they first started making the payments, due to the predatory terms.
      You signed it, pay it back, is what I keep hearing from the Boomers.
      However, the courts throw out contracts all the time, due to illegal and predatory terms.
      The only reason it's okay in this instance, is because it's the government doing it.
      I don't have a dog in the fight, but even I can see that this is a rigged game.
      Especially since prior to 1986, you could discharge student loans in bankruptcy. Now, it's nearly impossible.
      Why are these loans and only these loans sacred?
      But, it is ultimately self-correcting. A few more years and a few more Boomers dying off, and the millennials and the zoomers will take care of this through the ballot box.
      Oh no! Who will pay for it?
      Maybe if we quit getting in wars that last over 20 years, and end in failure, that wouldn't be such an important question.

What Dave isn't telling you is why so many people in the PSLF program were denied. It isnt because the politicians are "lying" as Dave seems to think. It is because the people being denied didn't follow the rules. In order to qualify for forgiveness, you need to certify your employment, make 120 qualifying payments, AND you must be in a qualifying repayment plan with qualifying loan types. Most people didn't realize that their FFELP loans and Parent Plus Loans dont count. They must be federal direct loans.

    Well I received forgiveness of $109,000 in student loans in March of 2023. I qualified for PSLF because I work a government job and made the 120 qualifying payments. I thank President Bush for signing off for this program in 2007 for those willing to go into public service.

      Genuinely curious, how much was the initial balance/principal and how much did you pay in total for all your payments over those 10 years?

    • @sidwhiting665
      @sidwhiting665 10 месяцев назад +3

      I'm curious how much of a lower salary you took during those 10 years to qualify for loan forgiveness. If your salary was $11,000 or lower than what a private employer would have paid, then you lost more income than you received in loan forgiveness. In addition to losing chances for things like stock options, career advancement, annual bonuses, etc.

      @sidwhiting665 but 11,000 would not be actual 11,000 in money he gets. It be more like 6k to 7k hitting his account. Since he would get taxes, healthcare ,retirement, and other things deducted.

    • @EvangelismforGod

      @@sidwhiting665 this is why Bush and Congress enacted this program. Because there was a shortage of those willing to sacrifice and go into public service. Sometimes isn’t not about the money or status. But for those of us who go into public service it’s about giving back and trying to make a difference for your community and country.

    if you have discipline, the income based repayment plan isn't a bad idea (same idea as getting a 30 year mortgage and paying it off in less than 15, but paying the smaller payments if times get tough). Our student loan payment was always $0 and our interest was deferred over and over again. We used that to our advantage and PAID IT OFF. Total was $27k, and only $700 of that was interest. Graduated in 2010, but attacked it for real in 2016 and killed it dead. (Bought our house in 2012, loan on a 30 year, paid it off in 2019.) Just gotta be smart and disciplined and you'll win with money.

      Mine was similar I graduated 2009 and finally paid off in 2015. I had IBR plan also and the high balance was about $21k but whats crazy is i would make these $500 payments and my minimum was $90 and they would just apply them as if I made 5 months of minimum payments. I had to literally call on a seemingly weekly basis and wait on hold for hours to get the payments applied properly. Also had a 6.75% interest that I couldn't get refinanced because the amount was too small and they were all federal when the real rate upon graduation was about 2.75%. Multiple friends of mine were able to refinance sub 3%.
      I have paid off two cars and the payment process is far easier and straight forward. I have 60 months of paying X amount each month and its done. Student loans were a nightmare.

    Why not do these 2 things;
    1) mandate student loans to be better explained and not offered for stupid degrees. Loan seakers should not be permitted to take a loan for a bad investment.
    2) force colleges to tell people how much in demand each degree is. And should a graduate not be able to get a job within a certain number of years, then they can get a refund for it but are not permitted to ever claim having that degree.

    Watching from across the pond in U.K. and just gobsmacked that these rebates were greenlit and given on federal backed loans. I also can see that being able to mix and match federal and private loans (and not even be legally compelled to put them toward educational tuition or needs) once federal funding is exhausted due to the eye-watering cost of some degrees stateside is a recipe for long term disaster. And it’s coming home to roost and I know Dave you’ve been bemoaning this for a long time.
