A Surprising Town - Winton, Queensland

- Winton is surprising.
Surprising because most people have never heard of it, yet it has a LOT of history.
It's where Waltzing Matilda (Australia's most famous song) was first performed at the North Gregory Hotel.
It's the centre of Australia's "Dinosaur Triangle" and home to extraordinary dinosaur fossil sites, like the Australian Age of Dinosaurs and Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede.
It's a "dark sky" sanctuary... one of only 10 in the whole world... where the clear skies and lack of light and humidity make the view of the night sky unbelievable.
It's a hot spot for finding opals - those uniquely Australian gemstones.
And it's one of the birthplaces of Qantas, Australia's "national" airline.

There are almost endless overnight stops. At Winton we stayed at Long Waterhole, but the best place to look up places to stay is on WikiCamps.
