Oh, I absolutely adore this! This is certainly one of the coolest things I've ever seen! My inner child is screaming haha 🥺💗 I was thinking about making my own vortex manipulator for a while now, but I've never done anything technical 🙈 Tho I do love arts and crafts in general ✨ Can I ask you for help, please? Any tips.. or perhaps resources on what to look for, because I have no idea of it's doable and where to start 🙈 I have old Xiaomi mi band 3 and my wish is to make it a part of the vm, so I can measure my heart rate with it (I have POTS and other chronic conditions, so measuring bpm daily is very important, but unfortunately I also have medical C-PTSD so incorporating it into a replica from my favourite show would be very fun, low key a dream come true project 🙈 I also want to add a led light (RGB?), and two buttons, one that would turn the light on and off and the other one could change its colour? Maybe adding NFC too, so it cean interact with my phone? But again, I have no experience with that either 🙈 Anything that would make it functional or like a figet toy of sort would be lovely, because it's already something that would make a needed health thing more comforting, so I'd like to play into the idea of a comfort item more?? (The more it'd look like the one in DW with all its buttons, the happier I'd be 🙈) Please, is that a something you have an experience with or is it a completely a different area of crafting? I'm not sure who else to ask haha Have a fantastic day and thank you for the video! ☀️

Thanks for the nice comment. I'm glad you liked my VM.
You've lots of ideas for your own version, I see, so I hope you pursue it. It took me three tries to get this far, ie there were two earlier versions I threw away. So do persevere. I put lots of info on how I built this one here www.madurasoftware.com/electronics/vortex-manipulator including links to the code, 3D model, and overall construction. That should get you started. Also note this uses bluetooth to connect to my phone (not NFC).
It does monitor my heart rate, and that works well, but for everyday I use a xaiomi mi band 6 which is cheap and easy, and a bit more comfortable to wear. The earlier mi bands didn't do heart rate as well as 6.
Buttons and LEDs are lots of fun. You should try out an Arduino board or, even better, take a look at adafruit.com where there are lots of starter projects, good tutorials and they even sell the parts. Good luck with your VM.

@@RogerParkinson You're welcome and thank you so much, I'll check everything out! 💗 I was just gathering info about Arduino boards today, I think I'll give it a go 🙈 I have a Samsung galaxy watch 5 as well as the mi band (for measuring ECG), but would rather use it only when I really need it and have something more comforting as well, so I thought I'd use the mi band 3 I already have 🤔 Thinking about it though, maybe it'd be possible to use the watch and build it in -so it'd be fully removable- instead 🤔 I'll see, thank you for everything! 🙈

Maybe you can add some SDR functionality? Shouldn’t be hard to integrate a RTL-SDR, and radio scanning would be so damn cool.
With something like a HackRF one you could also use it for replay attacks, like copying garage door opener signals.

SDR had not occurred to me. Might take a look.

Your Vortex Manipulator is light years better than the actual prop. I have some cell phones that I want to repurpose and build into props for display screens and such. Have you ever tried that?

Thanks! I haven't tried repurposing a phone. It would depend on what you wanted to do and what kind of phone. If you want a display screen you have two general approaches to choose from: start with the phone and just write an app that does the sort of display you want. I've written some apps for Android and it's a bit tricky but not too hard. I have an app that runs on my phone and talks to the bluetooth interface in the Vortex Manipulator. The other approach is to just get a display of the size you want, connect it to a processor and program it to do what you want, which is basically what I did with the Vortex Manipulator. The second approach needs more electronics but you can pick your own display size, which might be very different from a phone, and you don't have to worry about the phone operating system getting in your way. Bear in mind that a phone is designed to do a lot of things that you might not need in your project and getting around those can make it more complicated.

@@RogerParkinson I was probably just going to have the phone playing a video loaded onto it. I have the Ghostbusters PKE meter that I was going to replace it's 4 green LED display that it has now. I found several really cool tactical displays that can be downloaded. The cellphone were all free that I accumulated from friends after they upgraded cellphones.

@@4thdoctor284 Sounds pretty cool. Scavenging old phones is a good approach. There's lots of good tech lying around for free. I'll be interested to see the result.
