    • @TerrariumDesigns
      @TerrariumDesigns  9 месяцев назад +7

      I use springtails in pretty much all my terrariums, but you can still make a healthy terrarium without them. Springtails are great because they eat things like mold & decaying plant leaves. If you choose not to use them you will have to be more on top of maintenance (removing dead leaves & mold etc…). Its still totally possible to make a healthy terrarium without so give it a go:)

Only potential probelm I can foresee is that other plants (from seeds, spores etc) may spring up after ive done the terranium. But that might just make it more interesting.

I did my second terrarium about 4 months ago, with coffee plants, fittonia and moss - now the fittonia leaves look a bit pale and some have fallen, may it be too little light or water? When you say the substrate looks damp, do you mean the whole surface of the substrate? The parts you can see against the glass? Or the like five drops you did in the video. Should I stick the pipette into the dirt and spray!!

    • @TerrariumDesigns
      @TerrariumDesigns  9 месяцев назад +2

      I look at the side of the glass, it’s gets really hard to see the surface when moss & plants grow in. The moisture level of the substrate would be more or less the same on the top as on the sides. You don’t need to stick it in the dirt & you can put the water anywhere & it will find its way to the substrate:)

    • @awildpersonappeared
      @awildpersonappeared 9 месяцев назад +4

      If the plants are healthy, it may not be you! Some species of moss are not suited to living in a terrarium. Check the species of the moss you use and look it up. Common mosses that work well in terrariums include cushion moss, fern moss, tamarisk moss, java moss, sphagnum moss and sheet moss. You can probably find at least one of these species in a forest near you, or you can buy them. Hope this helps, and good luck!

    • @awildpersonappeared

      As long as the plants stay healthy, don't change anything! It sounds like you watered it the right amount, as the substrate should always stay damp!

    Please help 😥😥

    • @awildpersonappeared
      @awildpersonappeared 8 месяцев назад +2

      The issue could be:
      1. The lid is not closed properly/airtight. You could either get a new lid, or you will have to spray the terrarium with water every few days.
      2. You did not water it enough to begin with. Spray the substrate until it is completely damp - not wet!
      3. You did not press down the moss. To fix, gently press the moss into the substrate. This will allow it to wick up the water.
      Good luck!

      Don’t worry too much as mold is very common in the first few weeks of a terrariums life. That begin said mold can also occur when the terrarium has too much water. You can get rid of the mold my manually removing it, with time the ecosystem will balance & the mold will clear up. Springtails are also a huge help as they love to eat mold:)
