Ive only gotten about 3 stable terrariums setup after my first big bioactive vivarium i made for some day geckos- but! Something i found is that a little cling wrap and a rubber band around the mouth of the terrarium vessel works just as well as the acrylic discs you mentioned:)
In other of your videos you said that for a closed terrarium we would need springtails. Do we or not? I would be pleased to hear no, because I don’t want anything escaping and crawling through my home…
I use springtails in pretty much all my terrariums, but you can still make a healthy terrarium without them. Springtails are great because they eat things like mold & decaying plant leaves. If you choose not to use them you will have to be more on top of maintenance (removing dead leaves & mold etc…). Its still totally possible to make a healthy terrarium without so give it a go:)
Amazing video as usual, i've binge watch a lot of your videos and videos like these and i venture out into doing a couple of terrariums in jars and i'm facing a problem that is the glass stays on a permanent fog unless i leave the jar open whats the most likely scenario ? too much water ? or too much light ?
Normal LEDs work great:) I’ve used a desk lamp before & the plants loved it! For most of my ecosystems I have the lights on for 12 hours & off for 12 hours
I absolutely love your channel and moss vivariums/terrarium or any mossarium. I wanted to ask you something as you're a professional at this. Can I use any substrate for this?? I mean soil for an example from where I collect the moss? Or like flower soil which is rich is many things from the shops works too??
As a very new beginner and recommendations on getting some of the glass containers on a low budget please and thank you if it matter's I live in England
i live in a very wooded area in north wales. lots of mosses, ferns etc in my garden. will it be ok to use plants, soil etc directly from my garden? Only potential probelm I can foresee is that other plants (from seeds, spores etc) may spring up after ive done the terranium. But that might just make it more interesting.
I always like the tutorial. Just want to know what is the main difference between coconut fibre and coconut coir? I purchased locally from store, what I received looks more like fibre strand even though the supplier package called that coir.
I want to setup a small 30x30 cube to maybe keep a jumping spider or anything that is extremely beginerfriendly. my problem is to KEEP the humidity stable and keeping plants alive.. i dont really know what to do
Thank you, a lot of great tips! I did my second terrarium about 4 months ago, with coffee plants, fittonia and moss - now the fittonia leaves look a bit pale and some have fallen, may it be too little light or water? There are little new leaves so I hope I can save the plants, I really like them 😅 the coffee and the moss instead are green and happy, so at least something is doing good 😅
When you say the substrate looks damp, do you mean the whole surface of the substrate? The parts you can see against the glass? Or the like five drops you did in the video. Should I stick the pipette into the dirt and spray!!
I look at the side of the glass, it’s gets really hard to see the surface when moss & plants grow in. The moisture level of the substrate would be more or less the same on the top as on the sides. You don’t need to stick it in the dirt & you can put the water anywhere & it will find its way to the substrate:)
I made a fake bottom terrarium but I accidentally over-watered it on the first day, but even now the moss and the spider plants love it the fake bottom is almost full and the soil is always damp so should I let the water evaporate or should I leave it be?
I’ve built some terrariums and the plants always do well but the moss always seems to struggle. It always either dies out or loses its color. Do you have advice on how to keep moss alive and vibrant?
If the plants are healthy, it may not be you! Some species of moss are not suited to living in a terrarium. Check the species of the moss you use and look it up. Common mosses that work well in terrariums include cushion moss, fern moss, tamarisk moss, java moss, sphagnum moss and sheet moss. You can probably find at least one of these species in a forest near you, or you can buy them. Hope this helps, and good luck!
I made a mini terrarium out of a tic tac container I put some pebbles from the park cleaned them and put in with soil from my backyard lol and I found some moss growing up some bricks in my yard would that work? Also I taped around the lid to “help” keep moisture in… is that just a stupid idea or does it do something
Hiii!!! My terrarium has been there for 6 months and some ficus and moss leaves are yellow. The substrate has worms casting, but I don't know if it is a lack of nutrients. ):
Seen you video clip saying not in direct sunlight. Had mine in kitchen window for 2 months and is looking really well is it because it has no lid that's it's doing ok
My first terrarium is 2 week old and it started too much mold on the surface of the soil. .i added fittonia, turtle vine, artillery plant and dried pine leaves. Pls help.
Don’t worry too much as mold is very common in the first few weeks of a terrariums life. That begin said mold can also occur when the terrarium has too much water. You can get rid of the mold my manually removing it, with time the ecosystem will balance & the mold will clear up. Springtails are also a huge help as they love to eat mold:)
The issue could be: 1. The lid is not closed properly/airtight. You could either get a new lid, or you will have to spray the terrarium with water every few days. 2. You did not water it enough to begin with. Spray the substrate until it is completely damp - not wet! 3. You did not press down the moss. To fix, gently press the moss into the substrate. This will allow it to wick up the water. Good luck!
Ive built a terrarium and the inside keeps misting up...is this due to the temp difference from inside and outside the terrarium? If so how do i stop this... Thank you
In my terrariums, the plants are growing nicely after 130 days. But the moss has gotten moldy. I added springtails, but the moss mold is still present. What am I doing wrong?
you know my problem with keeping terrariums is rolly-polly's they just keep eating the leaves of the plants and when i try to remove them they already laid eggs in the soil and i guess some mites entered the terrariums and have made the plants weaker how should i do it?
I've had my terrarium for about a year, and it has consistently been slowly dying ever since, I maintain water, indirect sunlight, and it is still dying. Is it something with the climate where I live, Colorado, being too dry? There are some bits that are still alive, but 70-80% is brown.

As long as the plants stay healthy, don't change anything! It sounds like you watered it the right amount, as the substrate should always stay damp!
