    Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
    Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

    There's like a doggy door that can be programmed to open either for a specific microchip or an RFID tag on the dog's collar. So no unwanted animals can trespass willingly. :)

    I know that they have electronic dog doors that are activated by a collar the dog wears. I'm not sure how you would install that on the fence or if it would work in this situation, but it's an idea.

  • @serrinahuntercarducci3057

    We have a doggie door for a large dog that has a sensor on its collar that the door senses and it doesn’t allow anything else to come in and out but the dog. It works rather well. We got it from Amazon. I know Kevin can build a craft through the gate or the fence line with the doggie door just take simple framing. That way Salem can run back-and-forth.

  • @BeekeepingWithTheBirds

    You could possible make a seesaw where she runs out into the pasture and then runs back into the fenced area with out making anything where the goats and chickens can access it? If that makes sense😆

    I will say that in the horse world we have a saying, “A good stallion will make a great gelding.” I’ve always found that to be true. More people regret the time taken to leave one as a stallion in hopes he will mature out the way they want rather than going ahead and gelding (in your case wethering) them and selling them to a good home. While goats don’t require as much cost to feed or time to raise as a horse with the small area you have to keep bucks in I would definitely factor that in when you decide what you will do with jasper.

    I enjoyed the discussion about conformation, especially how you explained why certain traits are desirable from a functional aspect. That's interesting stuff to someone nerdy like me!

    Regarding letting Salem go in and out of the pasture without letting the goats/chickens leave, I know it exists a doggy door that works via a chip. The dog/cat has a chip on their collar and when they get close to the door, it unlocks and locks back when at a certain distance! That could be a good solution :)

    Coyotes again? Oh my the yote got that rooster so quick. The roo was defending his girls maybe, no match for a yote though. Tough to go through that but that’s hey why you got Salem eh. Molly our Old English Sheepdog would most likely chase it down but luckily she has never countered any predators yet. She does have protective instincts though as I’m sure Salem does too. Love the video guys. Keep us updated on the coyotes as I’m curious to see how Salem handles things. Cheers, Chad.

    • @jenniferp5916
      @jenniferp5916 2 года назад +4

      If the stuffed coyote isn't ripped apart, you may try repeating the lesson with actual coyote yips, etc. .. recorded from the internet, so she can recognize the sounds as an enemy, when they wander the corridors/alleys between streets. (Kevin sounded like a dog, and I wouldn't want her to be confused) Hopefully she'll learn to be on high alert if she hears them. The use of the urine was good, as that too can be recognized and associated with them. Although they're generally quiet when attacking, the pack will call out to each other as they wander and search for prey. At least that is what they do in our rural community of Edgewood, NM. Good luck with the training!

  • @vwvw4
    @vwvw4 2 года назад +3

    The dog door with a sensor for the collar is the best suggestion. But in the meantime, you should not have her using the bridge as jumping from even a 3 ft height prior to 2 yrs of age can cause damage to the joints of a large breed dog.

    How tall is the fence? Perhaps you could teach her to jump it? I have a friend who's dog jumps 3ft fences regularly 😂

      That fence is at least 4 foot by the looks of it. Salem's breed really isn't built for jumping.

      @@_.-._.-. 😩 Most unfortunate, I'm not familiar with the breed so I wasn't sure! Maybe a doggy door that's microchip activated built into the fence is a better option?

    Ooo! Maybe you guys can teach Salem a button for the pasture that she can press when she wants or needs to?
