    ... Awesomeness .... "I think that is one of your children" .. priceless .... doing the refit yourselves you will learn all the ins and outs and what is backwards and forwards .. the bilge pump was definitely not a fail, it was an exploratory plan do review, plan do review and a good choice doing it on the dock rather than installing and then finding out ... as you can tell "fail" is not one of my favorite words .... exciting to be starting out on a new adventure, your adventure. Looking forward to hear more about you two .... you were suggested by YT and have done the suby, belly, likey, clicky, thingy .... thx for the share .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

      @@rws210 Only one problem with your request for Rum Punch to stay as they are. People change over time, especially as they get older and more experienced. I dropped Sailing Doodles a couple of years ago, but was because of his endless changing crews of Bimbos. SV Delos has changed, but that's wasn't unexpected after 14 years and a new Permanent Crew member. 'The Nugget' is now developing into a right little character and I'm waiting for the day that she does her first 'Piece-to Camera', telling us what they've all been doing.

    Looks like a few to many wraps on the furler, you may jam with the sail deployed. Shoot for about five wraps when the sail is furled and adjust as required.

    • @martyspargur5281
      @martyspargur5281 Год назад +2

      Please consider replacing this furler asap. The foils come apart at the joints (and snag the luff tape), and there is no way to guess the condition of the headstay inside them. The new style Hood furlers are practically flawless, this one is obsolete.
      If you are replacing manual pumps consider a Whale (Henderson) MkV. Like the one that was adjacent to your holding tank. They are superior to every manual pump I know of.
      Your Contest 38 is simply a better boat than 90% of what's out there. Excellent sea boat. Designed and built by people who know the difference.

    Fresh water could be from your tanks, shower/sink drains or rain leaks etc etc.
    The way i went with my bilge pumps was a small pump at the lowest point (all pumps leave a little water behind) being a small pump it leaves less water once off, also draws less current and makes less noise. About an inch up i have a fairly large pump and a 3rd, largest i can get above that.. the 2nd pump is easy enough to hear and if you can hear it somethings leaking a descent amount but all 3 running (and 3 lights) yells me i have a significant problem. Finally a float switch ontop of the stringer that is conected to a car alarm siren. All pumps have a switch setup with manual/auto switch and a light to say their active).
    The siren is if something drastic goes wrong in the night that sucker will wake the dead.
    Most of the system is for just in case, the small pump goes of once a month or so (i leace the cutless on a slow drip mostly cause im too lasy to tighten it up and i cnat forget to loosen it when i cast of lol
    I have a jarkan 105, 35 ft sloop built in 1980 in nowra nsw australia. She competed in the sydeny to hobart and several other well known races down here in the early 80s then spent most her life heading to the great barrier reif each year, and while maintained didnt see any upgrades at all so only had the manula bilge pump and a compas when i got her.
    Ive been a live aboard just over 3 years and the last 12 month had my 4yr old son aboard. I love thos life and will fight like hell to avoid going back to land based

    Perhaps the first thing you should know about boats is that when you work with tools near water the water inexplicably sucks tools and fasteners toward it. The tool or the fastener is ALWAYS the ONE that the project cannot be completed without and that you have no more of. (You already owe the water a couple of tools and fasteners so you are due.)

As you've already discovered, every boat needs a Naval 'Tiffy' like Tom, to keep it ship-shape. I would suggest you find yourself an Engineering Evening Class, to get some in-depth knowledge about your Diesel engine, before you start sailing seriously, even if only to learn how to service it correctly. It might be worth having it overhauled, whilst you are doing the rest of your refurb. Fair Winds. Russ. Pompey.

    Bilge pumps , the one you installed are weak , they clog easy , when you have the money install a pump above the waterline and just have the hose and float switch on the bilge , more room easier to clean out , and the pumps not permanently in dirty water , more room . Just a view
