Once again DM Khan with the 🔥content. I'd love to see a tutorial specifically going over the processing of the base to get a modern tone like Stick Figure. Same for the pluck guitar. I am struggling to make mine stand out behind the bass.
@@DMKahn you’re being too humble. You’re videos are by far the best on this subject matter. I’ve learned lots from your content. Looking forward for your future videos 🤙🏾🔥
I bit the bullet on your advice and....thank you! I watched your video about what you can/can't get awy with VST-ing for reggae and picking up a live bass has so much more soul to it.
Sounds great, really wanna do this, trying to work out your notes by watching your fingers! I know you've said it starts with E Major to D Major, or the root and the 3rd or 5th then down a whole step, would be a big help if you could specify the exact notes or tab for what your playing if possible please? Sorry to ask such a basic question :-)
@@DMKahn nice one really awesome channel really useful videos you have looking forward to catching up! Not much content out there on reggae musicianship and production Blessed 🙏
what is the compressor you are using on logic pro? I searched through all the plug ins, Apple and legacy included and do not see that one. Is it an external plug in?
Have you ever tried recording nylon covered flat wound strings? I can really recommend them. I think they give an awesome sound for reggae, no foam needed, super nice for the slides too, smooth and no risk of the screeching sounds or clanking against the frets. A bit pricey but they will probably outlive you since you just wipe them off an they are good as new.
Curious to know what your bass controls are set at? If you don’t mind... I also have a Marcus Miller Jazz and right now I’ve got my knobs straight up the middle and I’m playing on the neck pickup mostly. Just trying to dial in some better tone .
I usually run it in active mode, starting from the butt, first black knob at 90%, second black knob barely on, first silver knob at like 40-50% and second silver knob anywhere from 30-60%. The key is muffling the strings behind the bridge pickup for that round and slightly muffled tone.
It is dependant on the bass guitar, but generally speaking, boost around 60hz, cut around 300-600hz,, and don’t have too much treble. A little treble is ok for string noise but nothing too crazy. Bless
This is a totally fine way of doing it! Jamaicans used to use their thumb a lot. You just need to be careful because it changes the tone a lot, so how you process the bass will change. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just something to note. In my experimentation, I have found I most of the time I prefer the sound of my middle finger to my index finger or my thumb. However there have been instances where I preferred my thumb. Depends on the song too. I think if it’s a rock steady type of song that sound the thumb makes could be preferable. Hope that helps!
Thank You so much Dub Master. I wish you everything good in this life. I have learnt a lot of things from you ever since I started following this channel. I wish I had the means to repay you.
Thank you for all of your support Chinkwenge, trust me, you always repay me by liking and commenting. It’s all I could ever hope for. No worries my brother, enjoy!!
No not always. But this EQ setting is one that I have been using for years. It “just works” on my bass guitar. I’ve played with a lot of different ideas. Lately I’ve been using the DI track as well as a copy of it running through an Ampeg amp simulator.
It’s likely the electronics. I would look into getting a new wiring harness along with pickups. I don’t know which bass pickups id recommend, there was some good sounding ones on Guns and Guitars RUclips channel.
@@DMKahn thanks for the reply. you are probably right about the electronics. i couldnt find the guns and guitars video you are talking about . but i did see that the band khruangbin , the bass player uses some noise cancelling jazz bass pickups made by dimarzio, i might try those.
They’re regular strings, not flat wounds. They’re old though, which is part of the “dead but deep” sound. The foam kind of gives it a little bit of a stand-up bass tone (not completely, just a nod in that direction)
this video felt like a goldmine, no joke!! exactly what i was looking for !! thankyou so much :))
Glad it helped! Big up
Aí sim melhor tutorial para aprender tocar bass no reggae 🙏🏻👍🏻👏👏👏
really nice video man...great audio and relevant lessons....great bass tone advice too....thank you for what you do!!!

Hey bro, I don’t really do modern so I can’t really help. Maybe more treble? I’m just an old reggae boomer 🤣

Awesome you won’t regret it as long as you stick with it and practice!!
You can also use flatwounds or semi flats and use your palm to mute. Great tutorial.
I like all you do, mate! Your channel has been a great discovery :) Love those bass lines and the sound of your mixes

Hi DM Kahn, could you makes a Vidéo about how to take a good reggae bass record ?
Good tutorial! A question: How are you setting the volume and tone controls on your bass?
Volume on both pickups are 50%. Bass knob is 75% and treble knob is 25% approx

Great tutorial, will you have to tell us which DI you use ? 🤔 And what is your bass setting? Good continuation
I use a simple DI, it’s from DIYRE, they’re cheapest one that’s made from a kit. A Radial would probably be even better. But hey, it works
Nice one brother super cool bass vibes nice to see you enjoying that groove one of the best things about Reggae!

Real Reggae Good Vibes 😎🎸🎼🎤 I always want to know how to play a base Guitar. For me the most important thing in Reggae is the Base line 🔊
No time like the present to get a bass and start learning!
Great job . Great bass. Great music
Thank you brother!! ❤️💛💚
what is the compressor you are using on logic pro? I searched through all the plug ins, Apple and legacy included and do not see that one. Is it an external plug in?
Yes it’s a 3rd party plug-in. I typically use waves Kramer pye on bass, among others
Fantastic tune!
Give thanks brother 👍
Good explanation and demonstration!
Thanks brother 🙏
@@DMKahn Just realized you made a dubmix for bobmarleytracks.com. Great job! I play bass on all tracks :-)

I never have, like elixirs? Interesting idea, I’m definitely intrigued
@@DMKahnI have got these: "La Bella Black Nylon 760N-B" on a Ibanez RD505 (active mics) and really like the sound and feel. Awesome videos btw!
I do play reggae with flats too, I'd say it's the best and easiest way to get that "fat" deep sound of reggae bass
same , la bella deep talking flat wounds over here perfect for that fat deep sound.
Labella low tension flats for me, and I’ve also got 2 jazzes with D’addario black tapes, nice sound and feel for reggae 🙂

good job! wicked drummin' too.
Do you always record your bass di signal with a graphic EQ and the Kramer pie?
No not always. But this EQ setting is one that I have been using for years. It “just works” on my bass guitar. I’ve played with a lot of different ideas. Lately I’ve been using the DI track as well as a copy of it running through an Ampeg amp simulator.

What’s a good plugin for reggae bass ?

Does not sound like flat wounds. I thought I heard some slide screech.

Pode colocar traducir para português???
Don’t know how to do that bro, sorry
I am confused. Did he really say “ Marcus Miller jazz bass” with Fender printed on it?
Lol actually my bass is a custom shop fender, it’s a Marcus Miller model... so yeah he was right haha
Nice video but if you use a 4 string just for us beginners please......
Hi bro, all you have to do is ignore the top string :)
Barely can hear the bass line you playing.
You listening with an iPhone?
@@DMKahn no. A Samsung.
Too many strings
