Butlins Filey, Before And After Closure

  • I wanted to make a video to push my video editing skills, I have watched a lot of Butlins Filey videos and find the history of it very interesting. I'm too young to remember the camp but I did go to Primrose Valley as a child and have visited the Skegness Butlins so I can imagine what Filey would have been like in its prime. It's a shame more of it couldn't have been saved, I think it would have regained popularity if it was still there today.
I used Google earth Pro to look at historical satellite images of the site and see how its changed over the years, I'm surprised how long the land was empty, its only really over the last 10 years that it has been used.
If you have any memories of Butlins Filey feel free to leave a comment.

Great Video,Thanks. The Plaque on the Wall at the New Pub "John Paul Jones" At the Bay was Unveiled by Rocky Mason ex Redcoat at Filey(and several other Camp's) Who became entertainment's Manager and Freddy "Parrot Face" Davies who began working for Butlin's in 1957 and 1958 respectively To be fair "The Bay" is a great resort and still serving the Holiday industry. They were great times up at Filey in the late 50's and 60's and nothing, nothing compared to stepping of the Train at Filey as a Kid(Teenager) in those Day's.Both "Rocky" and Freddy became Master's of Masonic Lodges."Rocky" up at Filey.

A brilliant video. Well done and thanks for sharing. Its such a sad thing to see your childhood holiday centres disappear. Barry Island was my favourite and suffered the same fate as Filey and Clacton.

My dearest dad Rocky Mason was Leisure and Amenities Controller when we closed. He started his career at Butlins when Filey opened its gates to the public on its first season.
Trevor Guy was a charlatan and a scoundrel.
It was heartbreaking for so many, notwithstanding Filey and its economy.
    Such a ‘bloody’ shame. Literally.
    RIP Butlins Filey 🙏🏼

Went there in mid 50s. Hut J14. My mum entered a fancy dress competition and came 2nd. We met Charlie Drake. He was part of a duo as 'Mick & Montmorency'. Super week's holiday. Never to be forgotten. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

1966 arrived as England were winning the world cup
I think the only TV in the camp was being watched in small foom
Managed to get in to see the game
Only went so we could drink in the pig and whistle
    We were all 17
    But no one cared
    Fun Week but very basic

Went there in September '79 when they'd put in the indoor arcade machines; happy days!
Spent the morning birdwatching after they unlocked the gates to the beach, the afternoon's either in the arcade or in the pool and the evenings watching whatever show was on, it was a much simpler happy time

Outstanding video. I beleive since you uploaded this, the farmer who owns the land on the other side of the road has also demolished the old railway platforms. I saw a video done a few years ago where someone tried to get in the subway from the otherside where it wasnt yet filled in like on the primrose side, was full of old fairground parts i think.

Yeah I watched his and it was fascinating, then we went to Filey and I had a look at a few bits, the station has been flattened now though! I wanted to learn how to edit videos a bit better so I thought this would be a good subject to practice with

I was born in 1957. In 1964 (that is a guess) we stayed at Butlins in Bognor. Loved it. In 66 or 67 we stayed at Filey as some number of years earlier my dad had stayed there and thought it was brilliant. Frankly I thought it was a shithole compared to Bognor. Aged and wornout. Maybe that's a reflection of my age/awareness between the two (to be honest).
