Superb. I am on a binge of Butlin's nostalgia. This is one of the best! Thank you!
I was a nursey nurse 1970/1972 Bognor then 1973 Minehead.
Butlins...my childhood...for 10 years... Loved it so much ❤❤❤❤😀🏴
Best holidays I ever had
Over here, in the Netherlands we are not familiar with this kind of holiday parks. The BBC sitcom "Hi-De-Hi" was broadcasted on tv in the early eighties. We thought the setting was pure fictional with the yellow coats, the bad comedian and the dance instructors. About twenty years ago I've learned that this kind of holiday parks really existed and my wife who is a few years younger only yesterday discovered, while I was watching this documentary, that "Hi-De-Hi" wasn't pure fiction. Especially the quote "A week's wages for a week holiday" wil stick to my memory. Only from 1968 on, in our country "Sporthuis Centrum Vakantieparken" started but nearly without entertainment and certainly without an animation team. This parks were mainly about enjoying the nature and the woods where they were situated and all kinds of swimming-fun like large water-slides, swinging-pools with artificial waves, whirlpools and the famous "knuffelmuur", a tiled and heated wall (up to 37 ºC) This concept, this formula, renamed "Centre Parcs" is since the late eighties also based in the UK, Sherwood Forest and Elveden Forest, owned by the share-holders of brewery Scottish and Newcastle. Parcs like Butlin's we stil don't have overhere.
I've Been To Butlins Resort In Bognor Regis In West Sussex In England Back In May 2017 And It Was Super Awesome Holiday Resort Theme Park In The World. Thanks Mate. X
Great Doco, was at Skegness in the late 60's as an 8 yr old. Fond memories indeed. Thanks
thanks very much for uploading
I live a twenty minute car drive from filey and knew Butlins very well and helped to remove the fruit machines when it was winding down .I did manage to buy an office desk for £8 when they started to sell things of and I still use it every day so sad went it all ended Happy days
I've read many tales of the Filey camp. Unfortunately I never visited it .
A fascinating documentary, and very much a period piece. That style of doco was ruthlessly parodied by Victoria Wood with Duncan Preston as the journalist.
The early adverts from the 50s are hilarious, with their cut-glass accents. The two slightly fey young men discussing whether to go to St Tropez or Skegness found its way into a Julian & Sandy sketch.
I spent many happy holidays at Butlins, when very young with my parents. Then when older, with friends that I made there. Then with my own family for several years running at Warners, Puckpool IoW. The children were entertained by the Green Coats and they made friends and wandered to camp to their hearts content. Now, the poor children often go on holiday with their parents to faraway places, or even close to home, but rarely get the opportunity to socialise with other children.
I had a holiday in Minehead with my family in 1966 when I was 12. The chalets were very basic and had rough stone walls and there was a cubbyhole with a curtain for the wardrobe. We used to get woken up by a radio jingle every morning at 7.00. There was an open cable car that went over all the chalets and the swimming pools had glass walls so if you were in a café underneath you saw all the swimmers' legs go by. I don't remember much about the meals other than long tables and bread and butter but I had a great time spending all day on my own going around all the amusements.
Happy times! I was 9 in 1966 and was at Minehead. I loved it, especially the freedom to explore and spend hours at the funfair and pools, with the occasional check in with mum & dad!! I remember the smell of the dining room and loved the soup! The plate holders the waiters carried to the tables, always bread and butter and a pot of tea!! I have photos of the open, wooden slatted chair lift - a bit scary!! I remember feeling sorry for friends who spent their holidays at a hotel or guest house - how boring!!
I remember the radio jingle and “ziperdy doo dah zipperdy ay “ over the tannoy 😎- minehead about 1964/5
My mum worked at Butlins, Minehead as a cook before I was born in the 80s.
Hi Sally does she have many memories to share ?
Many thanks for this - just great!
11:21 GREAT SCOTLAND YARD. It's Jimmy Perry From DAD'S ARMY The Original Series. Happy New Year Mate. X
Amazing to see how to see how life's changed over the years. Interesting to see how people have lived and gone but the world keeps turning. Love Butlins but it's changed along over the decades. Although the fair ride looked better in the past. Without Butlins there would be no British holiday. I go 5-6 times a year lovely to see how it was bk in the day
Remember Butlins Mosney in Ireland so well
The family rooms were very spartan in the 1960's and almost like an Army Barracks but people were in fact much fitter and harder than the wimps of today !
My nanna won the Most Glamorous Grandmother competition in Pwhelli camp.
My Grampa won the most well hung at Skagness. The ladies adored him.
Pip Pip Cheerio Bob’s your uncle
My wife spent her childhood years going to butlins bognor for her summer holidays. She then went on to work there as a waitress for many years until meeting me. Where do we live now? Bognor🎉😂
Thank god my parents never took us there....looks like hell 😯
I was a redcoat!!!!!!!!!
I was a redcoat at Butlins 1982 and 1983 .... anyone remember me?
Yes, I lent you £10 and never got it back.
Yes, you owe me a load of back payments in child support.
Is it true that they used to give them a loud alarm call every morning?
It was a running joke that they used to say 'Hello campers', but I don't know if it actually happened.
'So what were the Redcoat duties?' Roy Hudd '... dancing with the ugly birds ..' Jeez, double take moment, did he just actually say that on tv? Times sure have changed.
There's a more recent documentary, from 2011 called The Butlins Story and one of the Redcoats, when explaining his job, says the same thing. So they haven't changed that much. I think he says 'less attractive girls' or something slightly more PC but the job was the same: dance with the ugly birds.
I'm American and wonder if Butlins is still around?
yes its is
It is but changed beyond recognition. They focus on child centred holidays now.
