  • Turning tools usually have a more complex shape than a chisel or plane blade, so sharpening them can require different techniques and tools. This video shows how I like to keep my turning tools sharp and ready to go.

I've never seen a scraper sharpened that way. I will be trying that method the next time I have to sharpen my scrapers. Thank you!

Great tips. Many thanks for your knowledge. Sharpening is my main failure but hopefully that will change. 👍👍👍

This was a fun video, I like to see how other people sharpen their turning tools. I personally will not use a bench grinder for anything, got my hand sucked into one when I was 23 almost lost my left middle and ring fingers, thankfully I still have them, just with a chunk missing from my ring finger that made my wedding band hard to size. Most people actually use a bench grinder or a shop fox for this task, I took some scrap maple and made 4 discs that I spray glue sandpaper to and attach to my lathes face plate for sharpening my turning tools, I figured if it can work as a disc sander it can sharpen my tools. Still loved the information and the presentation and I agree until you see it done or try to do it yourself reading about doesn’t necessarily do job of teaching

When using the vee arm guide there is a danger of pinching as the tool being ground gets jammed between the holder & the wheel. This could be extremely dangerous & cause catastrophic damage so would it not be better to have the grinder rotating the opposite way with a repelling action? Most grinders are easily turned around & the only negative aspect I can see would be that the grinding dust is thrown up instead of down but that is not really a problem. We are only grinding to sharpen so this would be a much safer way of doing it.

At 1:30 you state that CBN wheels wear out. To my understanding is that compared to regular wheels they don’t wear out, or at least have a very very long life by comparison.

Good information but I will disagree with the comment that CBN wheels wear out. I’ve been using a CBN wheel for over 10 years and it shows no sign of wear. It does need to be cleaned periodically but I don’t think it will ever wear our.

Good video but sound quality is poor. I have my computer volume on 100% and RUclips on max and still sound is not good.

I somewhat agree. Volume has to be at 100% to get what I normally consider 50-60% volume. But a great video still.

Everything I’ve heard about CBN wheels is they last forever. You made a comment saying they wear out. What do you guys approximate the working life of one of these wheels to be? I’ve been looking into getting one and the cost is high so I’ve been shy about pulling the trigger

They have the longest life out of all grinding wheels (when it comes to sharpening), but their lifespan really depends on various factors - how much you sharpen in a week, the type of steel you're sharpening, the bonding agent holding the cubic boron nitride to the wheel, the quality of CBN, etc. An average hobby turner, they will probably last a lifetime. For someone who spends an extravagant amount of time in their shop turning (like I do), I expect it to last a couple of years.

May as well unsubscribe because I'm not able to purchace a thousand dollars just to buy all the tools needed to sharpen with a bench grinder!!! Sorry but I'm a long time framer and I buy a lot of tools that I need or want but I am practical in my choices.
