  • We found 8 pair of denim jeans from the 1800s in an abandoned mine in Arizona at Castle Dome Mine. In an old shaft unexplored since the 1800s. The jeans were kept by the mine owner. They are supposed to be put on display at the museum. 3 pair were Levis Strauss the rest were Stonghold, Triumph and Pacifico. There are estimated to be about 100 pair of 1800 Levis in the world. They are prized by collectors especially in Japan. This was a tough explore roping down a steep and narrow shaft. The jeans were buried in many years of mine waste. The jeans would have been owned by the mine. The miners would put them over their street cloths while working underground much like coveralls.
We've explored hundreds of abandoned mines in Canada the United States and Mexico, going places nobody else would dare to go! A New video is produced every Friday, check us out here:
    • Newest To Oldest Videos
We do this for two main reasons:
    1) Documenting the mines for future generations.
    2) Collecting artifacts for our museum.
Mines are being filled in, demolished, and/or collapsing at an alarming rate, so it is crucial to document them and save these artifacts while it is still possible.
Join us for our weekly adventures as we go deep underground into historic abandoned hard rock Gold, Silver and Copper mines. We relive the Prospecting, Gold Rush days, going back in history with every expedition. Visiting abandoned and forgotten places, climbing down mine shafts into dangerous mines, finding treasures, seeing antique heavy equipment such as ore carts, crushers, milling machines, ball mills, explosives and other mining equipment.
This isn't Minecraft but the real deal!
Come visit our Exploring Abandoned Mines Museum in Grand Forks, B.C. Canada. The museum is open to the public, free of charge, donations gratefully accepted. We have a huge assortment of mining artifacts accumulated from abandoned mines, donations, and other collections. We also have operating mining equipment on display.
Museum is located at 5615 Kenmore Rd Grand Forks BC Canada V0H-1H4. Best to phone first 250-444-0183. Come for a visit! www.google.com/maps/place/Exp...

Lots of people commented that I should have kept some of the jeans for myself. I was a cattle rancher and the way we always did things is that when you gave your word you followed through that is what I have always done. We didn't get to keep anything but I am not complaining we got to explore some awesome mines!

The man invited Frank there and all these people comment that he should have STOLE the jeans. A man's word is his most honorable attribute .....far more important than the insatiable and unquenchable desire for money. We need more Franks in this world.

This man wouldn't have made it down there for the rest of his life. It's sad to think about honestly.

  • @DM-ic9ty

Surprised no one has pointed out WHY all those jeans would be down there. The jeans were very expensive even then and typically belonged to the mine/mine owners themselves. So as miners went to and from work they would have regular clothes on, once they got into the mine (near naked) they would exchange jeans with the workers at the end of their shift. They would simply leave the jeans for the next shift. Often times, as mines played out or shut down, absolutely EVERYTHING would be left where it lay, under assumption that conditions or prices would improve and they could simply go back to work, grab their jeans and start digging.

Levi's Fact: Levi Strauss & Co. Started out using metal rivets to attach metal straps to horse blankets.Jacob Davis Nevada tailor wrote in 1872 to successful merchant Strauss the secret of those pins is the rivets I put in them pockets"I cannot make them up fast enough...My neighbors are getting jealous of the success and unless I secure it by patent papers everyone will make them. The duo quickly patented the durable pants in 1873.The oldest Levi's jeans then were called "waist overalls" which are 136 years old and were produced in 1879.They are kept in a fireproof safe and only 2 people know the combination in San Francisco. The marketing slogan for the pants then was "For men who toil".There are no belt loops on the XX 'just a few buttons around the waist to attach suspenders, the preferred method to keep pants up in the 19th century and a cinch in the back for adjustable size.Hey Frank the pair with the leg missing was for patching purposes and came that way from Levi's.Another pair nicknamed Calico for the California Silver Mine- Date 1890 discovered in the 40's.the inside pocket features the 2 horse trademark. Which was introduced in 1886 and was to signify "the durability of a pant that customers would wear for decades and couldn't be pulled apart with two horses ".

I really appreciate your work and the braveness you proved when entering such a deep and narrow, unsafe hole which easely could be a grave. I remember one sign next to such a hole: "Don`t enter, stay alive." I think you guys should deserve a finders reward. So Mr. pit owner who definitely does not put his life in danger to go down there is going to sell one of these garments and whatever the auction brings belongs to you. This would be fair! And I see it from the owners side when thinking of it because I would have stomach ache whenever I see these jeans and know I just took it for free.
On the other side hanging it on a wall in this makeshift museum gradually destroys all clothes as they are exposed to uv light. Especially in this location. Actually they belong into a dark locker of a climatized museum. So poeple in 300 years can still see a blue jeans from 1880. After several years on a wall you will see how the cloth color is fading.
And one more time: I admire your work! Greetings from Berlin !

I worked for years in a small worn out sawmill that was at about 7,000 ft. elev. We used torches to thaw frozen air lines and conveyors. Denim was the best fabric for a wick. Wrap a 2x2 with it, wire it tight and soak it in a bucket of diesel and it was good to go. Maybe they used it for light or to burn out scorpions and snakes and such
