This serie was wonderful, you made very complex things seem very easy with a bit of practice by incorporating your thinking process into it and it helped a lot
Oh man, I remember Lights Out being my first redstone project! I made many revisions over the years and eventually my best design was a 3x3x11 tileable design with the adjacent light-toggling function, but also a reset, randomiser and win detection wire (so you can open something like a door if you beat the puzzle). It made use of the observable property that leaves have when connected to a log.

Hey Matt, love your vids.
As you said earlier in the video, this series is a great help to get into computer science projects in general.
Im doing similar games in rust with the electrical system.
One thing i feel most people tend to do is give up too quickly/ dont start at all.
You will run into problems and not everything will work either first try or at all, but you will feel incredible once you get your project running :D.
The connect 4 section of the video was my favorite part of the video. It shows off the planning process behind the logic so well.
I had a whole rant about a "possible movement matrix" for the game checkers typed out, but nobody wants to read that xD

Thanks to you I got into logical redstone, all because I wanted to make a screen do something in game and now I'm making a very simple PONG game.

You could also use copper bulbs as a t flip flop, and that would be easier, along with an observer or whatever to toggle each neighboring cell, -lights out

I've made my first game few days before this video, it was xoxo. And it so similar to connect 4, the only thing that changes is that there isn't a gravity circuit. And i have added automatically which player turn is and a win detection. This video would be so helpful if i've seen it before i started to create my game.

this is my first time watching anything like this, only here due to minecraft and me wanting to improve in redstone but you made it easy to understand

Neat fact / tiny correction: lights-out doesn't care about order, so you don't even have to follow a sequence in reverse to undo the sequence, you just have to do the sequence again, in *any* order
Plus, no solution ever requires a cell to be tapped twice.

Hey Matt, I just wanted to leave a comment saying thank you. I am now in university and I have this class called "Architecture of computer systems". The coolest part is, that I already know most of this and funnily enough, it's because of your lrr series and you explaining things in your videos in general. It's so cool that I got to know all of this through Minecraft long before taking the class. So yeah, I just found it really cool that I'm thinking in redstone implementations and it allows me to understand it more easily. Once again, thanks!

I made Connect 4 last summer, was fun to see you solve it too. You definitly took a more "logical" way.
I made the input for every column at the bottom. Then each cell will receive the input, and there is a global wire that indicates whether to display X or O. When a cell is turned on, it will "close" itsself and open the way to the cell above. I think this can be way faster then your implementation, as it doesn't have to travel down from the top. The downside of course is that you don't have the falling animation.

It's amazing that with all this weird piston and observer stuff you still use oldschool 2-torch latches that were in the game since the second redstone update ever
for lights out you can also use pressure plates to activate it, this way you can have chickens or other mobs run around that will automatically scramble the puzzle

I've been building unnecessarily complex redstone projects for as long as I can remember - I built a 4-bit calculator with all 4 main functions when I was 13 which was an immense struggle because I pretty much had to do it entirely with non-minecraft learning tools (not helped by the fact I built it in vanilla on an xbox 360); I've never found a more useful tool for learning how to do that than this channel, I can't believe I only found it today. If anyone is wondering whether or not to give it a go, this is definitely the best playlist to start with.

I've been really into Form and Function for a while now. Getting the simplest aspects and getting the form to follow in a fun way is what drives me in Minecraft
HE'S BACK!
for connect 4 you don´t even need massive redstone computing.
start with a 3 layers thick frame (sides and bottom closed but top open with a slot) of blue concrete blocks and close the front and back layer with any kind of block where you can see through.
extend the top by 2 blocks above each see-through-wall and one block high on the outline of the created rectangular platform.
Than pistons with the back against theese upper walls, pointing towards the gap in the middle.
Buttons under the platform, where the pistons are.
Optional raise the upper walls by one more block and cover the pistons from top.
Now the actual chips to drop insaide: use normal sand and red sand or yellow and red concrete-powder (because theese are gravity affected blocks).
Build them up on the edges of the starting frame in front of the pistons for each color a wall of the size and shape of the see-through area.
The players have to stand on both sides of the build and press the buttond above their head to drop falling blocks into the frame.
after the game one or both have to go inside from top, remove the dropped blocks and stack them back up infront of the pistons
i shuold have watched this because a month ago i just started to try speedrunning making games i made lights out pong and ddr this would have been helpful. thank you for making this for future games i might make and for other ppl

I decided I'm gonna build lights out without watching you build it. Now I have a circuit the size of New Mexico and I'm still working on it.

Now that I have seen it, will you continue to show interesting or efficient circuits for various electronic tasks? Or design something that uses a microcoded computer to run instead of hardcoded logic? That would be cool... :D

@mattbatwings, do you want to make a spectrum redstone computer with 64kb memory and a z80 processor that is programmable in assambler (you can use command blocks for the display if you want)?

Hey I have a question about lights-out game, can a set (with a solution) always have more than 1 solution or can u have a board with only one solution and if yes what would be the conditions to have more than 1 solutions (I couldn’t find a way to answer it)
What do you mean by only one solution? If it just means that your tap things differntly, of course all configurations are either impossible or can be solved in infinitely many ways, since if there is a solution, another one can be easily made by tapping a cell twice.
@@nathansong5926 oh yeah didn’t thought of that but I thought of it as if you have an array of cells to tap and adjacent item in the array cannot have the same cell (if that’s clear)
10:00 I made the exact same 3x3 game ~1 month ago and I used a completely different principle, I didn't use pressure plates or note blocks, I use skalk-sensor and my mechanism is bigger than yours, the distance between sections is two blocks, also my principle uses a fitch of maximum length of redstone signal, I reduced it with a barrel and comparator, i.e. the signal only reaches the nearest section, tff is also present, but only it is made of dispensers
I havent actually made any redstone contraptions that im actually proud off, but i have made 8-bit computers in this one specific game and i gotta say this vid actually taught me a couple of things that i found to be pretty useful :) i also thought the jokes were funny lol

2:00 for people that doesnt know how to program i recommend scratch this is Basic block programing laguage but can be pushed to the limits (powerful 3d engine, 3d Minecraft)
I made my entire computer that I want to make in scrapmechanic inside of a simulator and editor I made in the browser. Then I made a script that turned into a file that could be loaded in the game. That's what's I call planing ahead.
the problem I always have when I make anything with logic is that I instinctively try to make it as compact as possible and it just makes it so much harder. I also set all these random rules I have to follow for no reason, like the input and output have to align with each other

hey matt, gotta say u did a great job, but i wanna challenge u to make auto mine generation. i made minesweeper myself in python and mine generation was one of the harder things, because i had to make sure that the first cell u open always a 0 is, so there are no mines around it. i think its pretty hard to make it with redstone, but im sure u can do it!
i miss making games and other logical redstone stuff in minecraft, but i guess now im actually making games; hopefully one day ill be motivated to go back to mc

I think what could be slightly more useful for the lights out game would be a board generator, which essentially could take a string of numbers (a seed) and apply it as a set lf moves to create a board 10:37
2:50 Liskov substitution would be a problem. There is no magic to turn to the side when you want. Turning ability depends on speed and wheel slipping.

Can you do a mod review on the mod Redstone controllers 2 and show how old the blocks work because I cannot figure it out and I wanna know how to build with it
a mod i would recommend is axiom, not because of its in game editor but its super fast easy and holographic hand tools like move, clone, stack, ect and it would speed things up a ton if you need to copy and paste a bunch. none if it is in chat btw
