Our high school glee club performed this in the 70’s. One of my all time favorites. Our choral director from then share this today. Most excellent! Bravo!
I sang this great spiritual in the Columbia College Glee Club (Columbia University, in New York City) in the 1960s - I was a baritone, except for when they needed a tenor.😉 This wonderful recording took me back 60 years, a different world in a different century.
The differing tempos reflect the angst and sadness of the plight of the slave. Slow or fast, the music highlights the word and projects the feeling of the individual who originally sang this. Also, it’s part of the Negro Spiritual style. Up, down, fast, slow, sorrow and joy. Enjoy.
it’s not usually performed at this fast of a tempo. it’s not an unreasonable question to ask why it’s being performed with a quicker tempo than is typical
This song was a Bass's dream
Nooooooo moooore waiiillliiiing!
My high school choir of over 100 singers performed this almost 40 years ago. Great to hear it again.

You don’t need the books and you know it! So pedestrian. Weird that any professional choirs have them.
Not everyone can memorize every song Jennifer smh 😒
orchestra, symphony, and even band use them notes bruh. double standards smh 🤦♀️
Es todo lo que se le ocurre comentar escuchando esta belleza? Lástima 🤦
