Aretha was such an amazing lady, and make no mistake, I mean she shattered so many glass ceilings. I feel so blessed to have been alive when she put out so much epic music. To say what she did about Kelly is beyond kind. Aretha is an American Icon for sure.
And Aretha was not known for just handing out compliments to other women singers! This is genuine.
I remember this era of Aretha and the album "So Damn Happy" . i immediately went out and bought the album when released. I also remember watching American Idol during the season when Kelly Clarkson was on and won. Great memories...times sure flies...Aretha has transcended to another place now and Kelly Clarkson is considered a veteran performer and television personality now. May Aretha Rest in Peace. Her job was well done.
BUT SHE DOES COMPLEMENT OTHER ARTIST, ONE THING ABOUT HER SHE CALLED IT LIKE SHE SAW IT, WAS NOT A FAKE PERSON, KELLY LOVED HER TO, SHE WAS VERY DOWN TO EARTH. REST QUEEN YOU DID YOUR JOB.

I think Aretha did this because she wasn't threatened by Kelly's talent like she was with other female singers she wasn't ever that complimentary towards. Think about it. When it came to Aretha's opinion about Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack or Anita Baker she only gave them at best slight compliments. She praised Whitney Houston after she died but during hey heyday Aretha only gave her mild props.
She actually praised Whitney before she died. I’ve seen a few interviews.

joeb267382 the difference is this was more than 20 years later & Kelly was up and coming. You also notice Kelly tend to put celebrities and legends at ease because her personality is down to earth and humble.
