@Saul Mayo The KTM is much more fun to ride. It has a lot more power, better suspension, better brakes, 21" front and 18" rear. It rides much more like a full size dirt bike than the Surron Light Bee. I love the Surron for what it is but if I have the option, I'm riding the Freeride E-XC.
As of 2019, KTM is not currently leasing batteries in the US. The balance feels really good on the bike, you don't feel the same inertia that an internal combustion motor producers. The throttle was really easy for me to get used to, it has a very smooth linear feel. Thanks for watching!
I can't help but imagine 2 stroke exhaust sounds as he rides. It's so unnatural sounding, just the whine and wind noise. Looks like a lot of fun thought! It's exciting to think of where this technology will go in my lifetime.
I've been a huge fan of e bikes since I heard about them but the limits really are huge for anything besides supercross style stuff. Not to mention the disposable nature of batteries. Still far from worth it to most people at this point
They are super fun bikes to ride and their current limitations are clearly with battery range. The 2nd generation of this bike is much more improved and I will be testing that bike soon. They're great bikes for backyard tracks! Thanks for watching.
Straight ripping! Nicely done! This video made me want one despite the poor range and ride time. I can't wait for technology to catch up a bit and these things will be incredible!
Man... the new battery is supposed to have 50% more life, but even that would be 16-17 miles or about 50-60 minutes, based off of your numbers. That seems very low. I'd be interested to see the test with the new battery... I hope this technology continues to improve. Great video, new subscriber.
Haven't ridden the full size bikes myself but personally really enjoy the surron - its small but that has its advantages - its light, and even in my average sized back yard I can build a small tight track with a couple of small jumps and have fun every day after work. A larger bike would be too cumbersome, and any ICE bike would be too loud in suburbia. power wise it could do with a little more umph but then the motor is massively underutilised - I've got a new controller (not installed yet) that should put out ~3x the torque and ~4x the peak power (though getting 4x the power needs a new battery). On small tight stuff and smaller jumps I'd say the surron could keep up, even be faster with a higher end controller and battery, but if you want to go big it'll probably start to struggle given its still using bicycle level components.
@@dax0474 its called a 'nuclear' controller from russia. endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=75494 you can also get a 'asi' controller (BAC4000) that works well from what I've read. both can be bought with a surron harness to make fititng them easier.
Hare scrambles here in VA are usually around 28 - 45 miles (getting in 4-5 laps, on courses 7-9 miles in length). So at best, not even half a race, and at worst, 1/4 of a race. I guess someone loaded with money could have 4 or 5 batteries and swap them out every lap.
Good overall assessment...kudos! Other variables that would affect range to think about. Hills, wet muddy conditions, water crossings, rider weight, heat, cold, speed. Where I ride it's usually wet, most everything is either up or down we get the occasional heavy rains with deep water crossings. I don't think I'd 5 miles out of a charge. They solve the battery issue and it's a game-changer.
Wow! That sucks. I don't know if I have ever done that short of ride. By the time I get all my gear on, I want to get AT LEAST 20 miles out of even a week day evening ride. BTW, my Surron is getting 20-30 miles with over 4,000' of climbing.
@Thomas Reid KTM improved the battery and motor to have more range. I made it 1 hour and 15 miles on the Surron before the battery died in race conditions: ruclips.net/video/u6DzZK7UpNE/видео.html
@Mats H I I currently have the 2020 Freeride and really love it. I do have multiple gas bikes though. It would be hard to only have an electric dirt bike at this point due to the limited range. I still want both at the moment.
@Chan Burrell 451 That is actually the rear brake lever. There is no clutch on the bike and no controls at the foot pegs. Braking is controlled front and rear on the handlebars.
It's amazing though that we have got a dirt bike with an electric motor. That fact still is amazing to me. If they could make the battery last.... 6 hours with yz suspension (my personal preference) that would be SOO much fun. I'm hoping that the market makes development possible because once we have an electric sports car, electric truck, and electric dirt bike that will work for the average consumer we WILL be living in the future and I will be glad to be a part of it. electric doesn't have to be boring
Thanks for the awesome videos. What do you think of the ebikes you have tested with regards to extreme Enduro? I'm thinking about sur Ron in particular. I find I am defeated more by the size and weight of my bike than anything else, and feel like I could do better on something between a mountain bike and 300 dirt bike. Any thoughts on that? I'm not sure they would even allow such a bike, but the courses are getting pretty ridiculous, and clearly fill size Enduro bikes are more than most average Joe's can handle.
@Holden2090 Thanks for your support and note. Great question regarding e bikes for extreme enduro. Awesome to hear you're out riding some rough enduro. I also own a KTM 250 XC-W (2T) and ride enduro so I can compare the pros and cons of these specific bikes. I'm an advocate for electric technology and I know I am here to review and promote electric dirt bikes. I can argue that electric excels in a lot of environments but there are also plenty of environments that ICE bikes are still better than electric. As much as I wish I could say that electric is better for enduro, the bikes are just not quite there yet. I would not recommend replacing your 300 with a Surron for extreme enduro riding. Here is why: The benefits of the Surron is that it is lightweight and won't wear you out like the weight of your 300 might. On the flip side, the suspension package is not as stout as your 300 so when the trail gets rough and choppy, that is translated from the bike to your body. The 300 is better at soaking up a rough trail. Ground Clearance: The Surron is a small bike and does not have as much ground clearance as your 300. If you're maneuvering over rock and log obstacles, it is going to get hung up quicker and high-center easier than your 300 will. Power & Power Delivery: The power of the Surron is not nearly what your 300 has. The 300 will destroy the Surron on hill climbs, hands down. As for power delivery, the 1 speed clutch-less transmission gives superior acceleration most of the time. It is when the going gets real tough and real slow that the linear throttle on the e-bikes become difficult to ride. With an ICE bike and normal clutch, you can feather the clutch and rev the bike to get over obstacles. Battery range aside, the KTM Freeride E-XC is going to be a superior enduro bike than the Surron. It has a lower seat height than your 300 and has more power and better suspension than the Surron. All of this being said, I would still pick a 300 for extreme enduro! I'd recommend buying a Surron or Freeride as a home training/turn track/pump track/buff single track bike and keep the 300 for extreme enduro. Have you considered running the KTM Low Seat, lowering the suspension 1" and maybe trying a Rekluse clutch?
@@ElectricCycleRider Thanks so much for the insight! Your points about ground clearance, suspension and power are all things I've considered and think are worth compromising to some degree... Just not sure to the degree a surron would. The point about slow speed technical throttle control is excellent... And definitely a no-compromise factor in my opinion. To clarify, the type of events I am talking about are the likes of Tennessee Knockout, Rev Limiter and Red Bull Override, all of which I have attended recently. These are races where B and even A riders may not finish a single lap due to the severity of the course. I am not strong enough to physically lift a 250lbs machine over my head time after time, but maybe one weighing a 100lbs less, which is essentially what is required in these races unless you have the trials skills of Cody Webb. Like I said, I would be more than willing to lose power, ground clearance and suspension to lose that kind of weight. It does sounds like electric bikes arent quite there yet though. Your suggestions to modify my KTM are very good ones and may prove to help quite a bit. It still will be far too heavy though for this kind of stuff. At my age, I'm not going to get stronger, nor will I become a trials champ! Thanks again for your thoughts. I am planning on adding an electric conversion to one of my mountain bikes, knowing that I will probably have to ride alone if I do it!
@Douglas Thompson I luckily haven't tested it in a crash yet but so far it's been a very durable bike. Same consistent build quality you can expect from other KTM bikes. Which moto do you normally ride?
@@ElectricCycleRider I dont ride dirtbikes anymore so I am completely out of the game. Ive been looking at e-bikes for transportation reasons but nothing more. I ride bmx currently so I get broke off enough as it is but these new electric dirtbikes are pretty cool.
@@DouglasThompson Right on. Yea the electric dirt bikes are really fun. Some are more robust than others but the KTM and Alta are built as solid as any ICE dirt bike on the market. Hope you get to ride one soon.
I have an Oset 24 electric trials bike and I will do one hour riding sessions in my backyard and get three sessions out of one charge or three hours. Trials riding is not continuous riding but ride and rest and much more physical that enduro riding. I think I can compete on a 3 hour short course trials event on one charge. KTM owner Stephan Pierer stated recently after buying Gas Gas that battery range is not an issue in trials and I believe he is right and look forward to seeing the new electric trials bikes. Maybe the 2020 Freeride is more suited for hard enduro and endurocross where your body will run out of energy before the battery does.
The Osets are cool bikes! The Freeride is not a full trials bike but KTM positions it in between an enduro and trials style bike. It's really not intended to do long range at this point.
Can't wait till you get your hands on a Zero FX, that one seems to have more power, bigger battery, but I assume all that must come with the extra weight.
Onroad I ride an Energica, it's big fun. Offroad I'm still waiting for something suitable. No hardenduro, no challenges just riding down the fields. I use a CRF250L now but badly want something really silent :-) Thx a lot for this testing.
Man, I like the idea of electric, but i just dont think we are quite there yet. 11 miles, and only 40 min, maybe 50 min on a new battery and maybe 60 min on a 2020. When we get to 3 hours, I'm in. Its gotta make a normal riding day with your buddies, and thats always around 2-4 hours.
@@ElectricCycleRider I agree, it seems we arent too far off, and hopefully we can figure it out. Imagine ripping through a dense forest on a goat trail and the only noticible noise is tire grip. I'm looking forward to it, personally. Don't get me wrong, I dig the 2 stroke sound too, but this is another level of peace in my head. LOL
Thank you for the video! Really looking forward to see the updated battery, with the extended range the bike would be suitable also for city riding (supermotard setup)
This bike is soooo good it will always work ive word at something called electrocross in amsterdam and riding on these things was a blast! The have like 14 of them!
@Philip Emanuele I would definitely like more ride time out of this bike. It would be good for a backyard track but 40 minutes at the trail is not long enough. It will be interesting to test the updated 2020 KTM Freeride and see what type of ride time it produces.
Thanks for your note! It's really hard to compare to a 300 because they deliver power in a much different manner. The power curve on the Freeride is very linear and has good acceleration. I wasn't quite wide open in the straights but close. It's no doubt a super fun bike to ride!
Where is this? Dust and rocks make me think Norcal but the vegetation is a bit wrong. And you rode that thing well, nobody can say it wasn't a decent test!
i just miss my 92 ktm540dxc.it was amazing. an e bike with power like that would be cool but imagine the battery.the 540 was a 2stroke.it used 11 litres an hour in a hare scramble tho. 100mph stock gearing.
@MATT22RIO Prices tend to fluctuate and I don't want to speak out of line before they release the bike. It's best to contact your KTM dealer to see what the MSRP is. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for test info! The first upgrade wil be....? 2nd battery? ...Beefier brakes?... A handful of KTM dealers are taking deposits on 2020 e-rides, I'v done my homework, this is the one for me. Swappable battery and the fact that KTM has 30 plus years of moto manufacturing experience to count on has me all in. (..unless ALTA starts up again.. or at least starts making new batterys..)
Thanks Dan! Yes, I would definitely suggest extra batteries and bigger brakes. Awesome to hear you're going for the 2020. It will have 50% more battery life, more efficient motor and better suspension. Looking forward to riding that bike soon!
I just test it in mode 3 on road during 1 hour 6°C, quite often at max power and I make 31 Km 30% Left, so I am not sure that you battery was full KTM-E-XC 2018 for me with 3.9KW
So that's why electric dirt bikes aren't really a thing. I kept wondering why they weren't totally replacing piston power. New battery technology to the rescue. I can't wait.

@Scott Mac Thanks man! 👍👍
Is KTM still leasing batteries?
How does the balance feel?
How long did it take you to adjust to the throttle?
As of 2019, KTM is not currently leasing batteries in the US. The balance feels really good on the bike, you don't feel the same inertia that an internal combustion motor producers. The throttle was really easy for me to get used to, it has a very smooth linear feel. Thanks for watching!
@D man This model in Mode 2 does not have engine braking like a 4T so it feels more like a 2T.
I can't help but imagine 2 stroke exhaust sounds as he rides. It's so unnatural sounding, just the whine and wind noise. Looks like a lot of fun thought! It's exciting to think of where this technology will go in my lifetime.
It's super fun! I'm excited to see these bikes evolve too. Hope you get to try one sometime.
@@ElectricCycleRider I just grabbed my brain bucket, boots and gloves. I'll be there in 15 minutes. See you soon, lol!!🏍️
What do you think a 17 mode is worth now in 2020? 120 miles
@Erik Kunkel Thanks man! They are such fun bikes. Looking forward to riding the 2020 to see the improvements.
Interesting be worth know how and what improvement the new battery brings
For sure! I'll have that test soon. Thanks for watching.
Man... the new battery is supposed to have 50% more life, but even that would be 16-17 miles or about 50-60 minutes, based off of your numbers. That seems very low. I'd be interested to see the test with the new battery... I hope this technology continues to improve. Great video, new subscriber.
@Electric Cycle Rider whis is more fun? KTM or Sur Ron?
Haven't ridden the full size bikes myself but personally really enjoy the surron - its small but that has its advantages - its light, and even in my average sized back yard I can build a small tight track with a couple of small jumps and have fun every day after work. A larger bike would be too cumbersome, and any ICE bike would be too loud in suburbia. power wise it could do with a little more umph but then the motor is massively underutilised - I've got a new controller (not installed yet) that should put out ~3x the torque and
~4x the peak power (though getting 4x the power needs a new battery). On small tight stuff and smaller jumps I'd say the surron could keep up, even be faster with a higher end controller and battery, but if you want to go big it'll probably start to struggle given its still using bicycle level components.
sn0wchyld where did you get the new controller from? Looking for something like that myself
@@dax0474 its called a 'nuclear' controller from russia. endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=75494
you can also get a 'asi' controller (BAC4000) that works well from what I've read.
both can be bought with a surron harness to make fititng them easier.
@NC PT If range isn't a concern, I'm riding the KTM every time.
and my yz250 with a big bore and a lectron gets about 50 miles of similar riding to what you were doing
Thanks Dave! I agree, it will be a game changer when the battery range is better.
Does it have regenerative braking or intact any sort of engine/motor braking
The 2nd generation KTM Freeride being offered now has regen.
Great vid.tks alot.big pity they re not really available yet in south africa
Wow!
Is this in COLORADO? What is this trail called?
Good test, good vid, good info - thanks!
Thanks for the note Andrew!
What is the value in showing a 3 year old bike with old lower capacity battery then the current model?
Would you buy the bike again or go for the petrol enduros?
@Mats H I I currently have the 2020 Freeride and really love it. I do have multiple gas bikes though. It would be hard to only have an electric dirt bike at this point due to the limited range. I still want both at the moment.
How does it compare with the Surron?
@Johan Saxe The KTM has better suspension, better brakes and more power. It feels much more like a dirt bike than the Sur-Ron.
Wow. Thanks for the heads up
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for Actually riding the bike hard.
What is the clutch lever for, is it just so it feels like it has one
@Chan Burrell 451 That is actually the rear brake lever. There is no clutch on the bike and no controls at the foot pegs. Braking is controlled front and rear on the handlebars.
Electric Cycle Rider yeah that’s what i figured when I got to thinking about, thank you 👍🏻
Dude! That thing is awesome!!!
Hell yea! Love this thing!
@Spencer S. Young I agree! I think it's pretty amazing too.
Spot on,keep it up.I'd like to see how it compares to the Kalk.
@ElectricityMX Thanks for the support! I'll be trying out the Kalk soon.
I feel like i lost 20% power .wat could be the problem ?
Were do you buy the freeride exc in the us I can't find one anywere
You can buy a 2020 in limited quantities this coming winter/spring. The 2017s can only be found on the used market at this point.
@@ElectricCycleRider but is it available in us this year
@@ultimatebs9474 The 2020 KTM Freeride E-XC will be available in the US at a limited amount of dealerships during the 2020 Winter/Spring.
@@ElectricCycleRider shame they dont do a more open production like with the rest of the ktm 250 class
@@ElectricCycleRider Where did you get that info? I can't find that anywhere.
Here is why:
The benefits of the Surron is that it is lightweight and won't wear you out like the weight of your 300 might.
That bike looks fragile. Can it take some damage in a crash?
How many hours when it needs a new top end?
@supermath 360 Haha, unlimited hours.
@@ElectricCycleRider magic!
is there any way to lower the power deliver for my wife?
yes. 3 maps
Would be nice, if electric bikes had adjustable drag brake like RC cars. And regenerative braking.
The Zero bikes have regenerative braking.
Sur Ron does too
The 2nd generation of the KTM Freeride has regen.
How long does it take to charge?
Where is this trail? Looks like a blast
Is that a clutch I see? Whats up with that? Thought it would be a single gear
@Jesse Kozazcki The rear brake is on the handlebar where the clutch would be.
Great video pal 🤘🏻👍🏻
Thanks Dale! Appreciate the support!
🤘🏻👍🏻👌🏻
Can one ride this on the street? Mountain bike trails?
Where was this ride at? Beautiful country, looks like great riding!
@M Stack It is indeed! I'm located in Colorado 👍
but is it waterproof ! drive it through a waist deep stream !
Great question. I’ve crossed streams with it but not personally tested it in deep water.
I wonder how the torque is handled. Is there a setting for 100% at 0 mph?
There are 3 settings for power delivery. 3 being fastest and 1 being slowest. I rode it in power mode 2 for this test.
Can battery be swapped? Would be great to be able use one battery while the other one is changing
Yes 4 bolts, but id get the new more powerful battery
Yes, as @Riku Perry said, you can swap the battery with 4 bolts.
Can't wait till you get your hands on a Zero FX, that one seems to have more power, bigger battery, but I assume all that must come with the extra weight.
Why does it have radiator shrouds?
It's got radiators!
Onroad I ride an Energica, it's big fun.
Offroad I'm still waiting for something suitable. No hardenduro, no challenges just riding down the fields. I use a CRF250L now but badly want something really silent :-)
Thx a lot for this testing.
Thanks for watching!
Totally. The battery tech needs to improve but we're not too far off from those goals.
LOL
How did you get this in the United States ? Pls help!
KTM did a pilot program in the United States in 2017 and I was able to get one of the bikes. Are you interested in purchasing one?
It would be interesting to do this every year to see how badly the battery degrades over time. I think these are really cool though.
@elobiretv That's a really interesting idea! Maybe I'll give that a try. Thanks for the comment.
Can you ride it through water?
I see the three stroke legend is true
Are these available in UK?
@Para_Playz Yes, the 2020 models should be available in the UK.
Thank you for the video! Really looking forward to see the updated battery, with the extended range the bike would be suitable also for city riding (supermotard setup)
@MonsterIsOutOfCtrl I appreciate the comment! I'll be doing a test with the updated bike and battery soon so keep a look out!
They’re making a supermoto one right now. E-sm or something.
@@maxarey4658 they are not. First Gen was available in enduro and supermotard setup, the second gen just in enduro setup...
This bike is soooo good it will always work ive word at something called electrocross in amsterdam and riding on these things was a blast! The have like 14 of them!
@Wheelivery Annan Awesome!
Do you feel like you got enough riding in or do you feel cut short?
@Philip Emanuele I would definitely like more ride time out of this bike. It would be good for a backyard track but 40 minutes at the trail is not long enough. It will be interesting to test the updated 2020 KTM Freeride and see what type of ride time it produces.
The sound that bike makes is as bad as the range
Yeah, I really liked the idea of electric dirt bikes until I heard this thing running. It's like nails on a chalkboard, I could never get used to it.
I wanna know how far you can travel until it drains.
Is that bike street legal? I noticed it had turn signals.
Yes, but if you use them the range cuts in half
Haha
It has turn signals and all the street legal equipment added but I haven't tried to plate it at the DMV yet.
Interesting results, was you ever wide open on the straights . Does the torque feel like a 300 exc good real time review thanks for posting up👍
Thanks for your note!
Thanks Neil! I live in Colorado.
It's like an RC bike! My average ride is 50 miles or more. I guess if I made my yard in to a track it would be fun:)
It's a great bike for backyard tracks and playing around! At this point, the bike isn't designed to go long distances.
i just miss my 92 ktm540dxc.it was amazing. an e bike with power like that would be cool but imagine the battery.the 540 was a 2stroke.it used 11 litres an hour in a hare scramble tho. 100mph stock gearing.
Gtfo sisy. Electric is the future
Where can I buy one of these
KTM is supplying these to select dealers.
What’s retail on these bikes?
@MATT22RIO Prices tend to fluctuate and I don't want to speak out of line before they release the bike. It's best to contact your KTM dealer to see what the MSRP is. Thanks for watching.
They need to make the smaller electric vehicles with quik change batteries. Like the power tools. Then the short range will be less of burden
Sick vid!
Thanks Raphael!
Pretty cool... the way things work - I wonder how much the weight of the rider might effect the battery drain (?).
I haven't done a test with heavier riders but for what it's worth, I weigh approximately 160 pounds with gear in this video.
I just test it in mode 3 on road during 1 hour 6°C, quite often at max power and I make 31 Km 30% Left, so I am not sure that you battery was full
KTM-E-XC 2018 for me with 3.9KW
Your 2018 is the new model with the updated battery so it will have more range than my 2017.
What do these cost?
The new 2020 KTM Freeride E-XC is approximately $10k MSRP as I'm writing this in Nov 2019.
Proof that electric doesn't have to be boring.
My old Yamaha only got 2 hours per tank... and it had a 8.5L tank 93 octane only lol
They need to get battery to have more range than that, I think they will eventually, the tech is there - just not quite.
@Rockit For sure. They're working on it and they will get there.
Really amazing
I was actually thinking of getting one ... maybe for my track at home that's it.
@davetileguy They are perfect for home-track riding. Great way to get some riding in and not annoy the neighbors!
He who invents a better battery (energy storage device) will be richer than Ritchy Rich.
Shhhhh I'm working on it 🤣
So that's why electric dirt bikes aren't really a thing. I kept wondering why they weren't totally replacing piston power. New battery technology to the rescue. I can't wait.
Man that thing is sweet! What's one cost?
@Jerry Nix They're super sweet for sure! The new 2020 has an MSRP of $10,499
