@@XDantevsVergilX I completely agree, I'll be honest I generally find dragonquest combat way too simple in general. I like my turn based rpgs with some kind of twist to keep things interesting. So dull animation and combat, sorry but this year has so many better RPGs.
They probably wanted to but didn't because we all know that todays culture is to complain it's not exactly like the o.g game even if you weren't planning to play it in the first place.
So they added character Sprites off your Party into the combat... Without them having an actual function. No battle Animation for it. But no smooth transition to the classic attack screen either. Instead we get a short black screen. Everytime. I personaly find that very offsetting. Very weird Design choice.
Especially that there isn't alot of character classes so designing their combat animation shouldn't be much of a budget or time consuming to being with lol
I couldn't agree more, for a Square Enix title you would have thought they would easily have the budget for that. I honestly couldn't justify buying this at full price. I imagine it'll be on sale early next year.

This was a great review. Actually told me what was new about the game and ya didn’t get upset about not being able to purchase a chain sickle at the start. I am just all Dragon Quest 3 outed by now over the years. It does look beautiful maybe on a sale in the distant future I'll try it.
Final Fantasy, Mana, Live A Live, SaGa, & Dragon Quest. All the series got a remake in these 4 years alone because of Square Enix. They have my eternal praise for this! A certain other company should learn from them when it comes to pleasing older fans. That aside, another solid remake from Square.
I just hope they don't have exceedingly high sales expectations since they've already stated FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth didn't really sell to expectations.

That depends even the current Switch collection of DQ1 to 3 can still have the 3rd game take 80+ hours despite that version NOT having a IN game timer.

Romancing Saga 2 is a great, more modern (QoL specifically) remake. RS2 remake will appeal to many more people than the original does. This sounds like a great remake for existing DQ fans looking for a faithful version with a new coat of paint, poor QoL and all. I for one loved RS2 remake but will also love re-living this game with that orchestral soundtrack :)

The old Random Encounter catch-22. If they reduced the encounter rate, you'd be crying about the game being too difficult and about how you were "forced" to grind all the time. If the encounter rate is set where it is, you instead cry about how it's "way too high" a minimum of 8 times in your review.

I don't understand the intended audience here. For new players, this game seems archaic. For hardcore fans, it's literally the same game with improved graphics. Who is going to spend $60 for this?
I might be crazy here - I'm definitely assuming I'm in the minority - but I just do not like Squeenix's "HD-2D" graphical style. The overabundance of visual effects is so garish to me and the way it just casually throws perspective out of the window with the way it uses some sprites takes me out of the experience way too much. I much prefer the flatter, more cohesive look of actual 2D to this.
I wish square were smarter about their pricing. I really think selling this for even ten dollars cheaper would bring in way more people and result in overall more profit. Full price for this kind of remake is just harsh
I was very much looking forward to getting this, but sadly, once word of the censorship got out, and after the interview with Yuji Horii, I can't in good conscious support this. I'm currently playing through Romancing SaGa 2 and the game is fantastic, and the art is completely uncompromised. I don't understand how Square let that game be released with it's art design intact, but DQ needs to be censored.
To me, this game transcends most of the criticisms I have seen levied at it. I don't want more hand holdy quality of life features, I don't want a fleshed out story, I don't want character battle animations, I don't want it to have most of the things that 'modern' gamers want cause modern gamers drive game design into the ground.
My only issue is that Im not very imaginative person 😅, i hate it on earth bound and smt games despite how good those games are i enjoyed played them .still i hate first person pov. Its not 1980s , i can see if its an indie dev but big Boy like square enix don't have any reason not to include the 3rd person pov to me its just lazy.
The music in Dragon Quest gets on my nerves tbh, too Caviar for me. I couldn't finish DQ11 because of it. Also the story in these games are just way too cookie cutter, they lack depth in a lot of areas. That being said, the random encounters for this was not the best choice since in DQ11 roaming around has no limits and you can fight any monsters at your own will. That should have been added to this game 100%

The turn base starts to drag after a while esp if the game is large. The stop/start nature and switching in/out of battles becomes annoying. They should have made it more real-time like they did in FF7 Remake.
Maybe to you. Turn based can be incredibly fun the entire length of a game. See metaphor refantazio. The issue is when the gameplay is very simple like this game.

But common… it’s 2024 and you are going through the effort to make this remake why not just add battle animations it would have been pretty obvious most modern gamers would appreciate it. I'm especially disturbed that they changed designs that the late legend Akira toriyama designed for "western tastes". I assure you, you'll lose more sales this way than you'll gain.

May not be for every1 but def for me. The og was tied for my fav rpg witb ff6. My 1st 2 rpgs. None have quite match my enjoyment of those 2 games.
