Sonny E. vs Tony R. Jr Thanks for watching don't forget to like, subscribe and comment on who was your favirate. #rovie kizola #sonny emory #tony royster jr
I just started watching drummers on RUclips about 3 years ago. There are so many Amazing Drummers.!!! From what I've seen, just my opinion. Sonny is the Smoothest, Coolest, Most Incredible Drummer.!!!
So, both are monster drummers - so much respect for what they do and what it must have taken to get there. For my taste, I’d give Sonny the nod only from the perspective of his musicality while soloing - maintaining the rhythm, flow and feel of the song throughout his solo is so impressive and pleasing to the ears. That takes nothing away from Tony though...just a style issue.
Watching these guys with their incredible speed, and very little sign of Moeller technique etc, blows open the whole myth that anyone can play that fast if they just master the technique. To all drummers out there that have been trying for years and years to increase their speed, sorry to tell you, but each person has a speed limit. Some people run like Usain Bolt and others waddle like a duck, its the same with drumming. Oh, and I think both drummers are amazing!
Check Tommy Igoe's DVD Great hands for a lifetime, it shows the proper way to use the fingers, bouncing the sticks, and staying relaxed all the time, unbelievable progress can be made by using this simple technique, people can play way faster than 200 bpm after a while
Both great drummers. But, I definitely like Sonny better on drums and not pads. Much of his subtle touches get lost on the pads I think. Regardless, I could sit back a listen to these guys and this band all night.
One with blistering singles using arm strengh, other uses pure finesse and skill. Both are so very awsome. These are those guys you show friends who think average drummers are so great! Theyll shut up and fast. ast
Boy wonder against musical master? Both are fantastic. And for pure listening pleasure Mr. Emory is my favorite. If you like a bombastic style check out Eugene McBride. Gene sounds like a Fourth-of-July finale.
Based on the content you presented its clearly Sonny's musicality that wins out but Tony is quite capable. I wish I could be mentioned in the same conversation with either one of these fella's.
Sonny has incredible rhythm and I really love his playing and style. But, I’ve been a long time fan of Tony and his playing as well. Kinda hard to truly decide who’s better.
MAN.........you can’t choose “best” here. This channel needs to grow UP with videos like this. This was Tony AND Sonny blowing like mofos. There’s no competition here.
As you said...theres no " Best " especially at this level, only style .... i know my preferred style but thats not for everyone.. i am in awe of both of these guys
Respect to both. Monster skills with Tony, jusy feel as hes always smashing the drums though. Sonny on the other hand i feel hes more creative, dynamic with amazing feel. I've favor sonny in this duo.
Tough 2 compare u jus gotta put your self in the 80s different era mane music is always evolving tony prolly my skilled but I actually prefer the groove over speed both r extremely good
Sonny wins, by far! Tony is fast, but no controlled dynamics. I don't think he has ever heard the terms Crescendo, decrescendo, metso Forte, or pianissimo. Only FORTE!!!
No man, that's what public does, JUDGE! That's what entertainers do: show something and receive opinions. That's what the show is about. You can say whatever you want! You can express your preferences. There's nothing wrong on that!
@@jamiefoster1998 I've been playing drums for over 20 years and I'm a huge fan of drumming, but it doesn't matter at all. I can be a guitar player, a lawyer, a baker. Whatever you want. The point is not who I am or what I do. The point is that this video is about giving opinions on Sonny Emory and Tony Royster Jr. Who do you like the best, which one you prefer. That's it. Nobody is evaluating your criteria to have your opinion, nobody is asking you to justify it, and you don't have to be a super pro to say if you prefer something over other thing. You don't have to have the level they have as musicians to express who you like the most. This is just giving you the chance to compare them both, not getting you compared to them. But if that's what you want to do, that's cool too.
GZ all I asked was are you a performer.. I never said one word about validating your opinion in that question. It was a question of interest in what your background was. You gave a great response to my opinion. I had my opinion. Do I totally hear you and what you’re saying? Yes! Do I back down from my opinion, no. Does that mean, I’m not going to have interest in other opinions? Absolutely not! You want to know why I watched your video? For that reason right there. And guess what? I read through opinions and decided to give my own. That’s a lot of time on your channel. And hey, There’s gonna be people like me and each of us are a visit to your channel. Which means more money so you can keep making videos. Now, on that note, If anyone were to try to eliminate your right to make videos like these, I would be the first to speak up and defend your right to continue. You felt the need to speak out on me because my opinion came off as arrogant. And you made clear that this is a friendly exercise in compare And contrast. These conversations are going to happen. And guess what if people are reading them, they’re spending more time with you. “ I may disagree with what you’re saying but I will defend to the death your right to say it. “ it doesn’t matter who you are. “ I simply asked if you were a performer.. If I offended you, whoops! But still loved what you had to say in response. And it’s because of your response a that I dropped a “ like “ on the video. Not to “ make nice “ but because I respected your response. Respect and agreeing can be two different things. Yes I can say what I want. And it was conversational. You state the right to judge.. Well, I passed a judgement as well..but my question was out of respect. Maybe I should have said, Hey, great response! That was fucking brilliant! ! What’s your story?” But that sounds kiss ass and that’s not my style.
all respect to Mr Royster for his abilities. He is a selfish player. and he steps all over the musicians he plays with. Where as Mr. Emory is incredibly musical and supportive when he plays. and he has a much wider vocabulary than Tony. Drummer vs Musician. Sonny is the clear choice. I mean... Mette MIddler, Earth Wind and Fire, Steely Dan, Bruce Hornsby, and on. Tony can't do those gigs. Sonny Emory is the man for all seasons.
Sonny's drumming seems more musical to me . Where Tonys drumming seems remarkably fast and technically phenomenal it just doesn't have the "groove" Sonny's has . Just an observation. Both off the charts drummers
I don't agree with the comparison. Weckl has similar vocabulary/ technical ability/speed to both emory and Royster where Gadd, The king of session drumming and one of the all time icons of drum-set just does not have the same breadth of vocabulary. Gadd vs Porcaro? Yes. Emory is the clear choice.
@@Martin_Bernard yeah Royster is more like Williams on Steroids. Not a lotta dynamics there. Weckl has other worldly chops tho + extreme dynamics. I was being nice.
So i think royster got some sick and twisted chops and his timing is metronomical. I just think sonny is more tasteful. Not better. Both are Fucking amazing drummers. It was royster that i first noticed about 8 years ago that got me into gospel chops and the awsome drummers that collaborate with it. Thank fuck for RUclips, i'm a better player because of it.
Tony royster sonny old he was a great recording/Tour drummer back then but drumming has evolved over the years you have to do it when you young cause philly c.o.g.i.c style drumming is high intensity especially jazz chops in gospel chops

I think I know what you're saying, but at this level, it's simply a stylistic preference. I personally am amazed by both players, but my preference is with Sonny. Cheers!!!
@@wphh7272 That is a ridiculous comment. Sonny is still working a lot. With a litany of artists. Groove never goes out of style and Sonny has it for days and days. Tony is just the first kid on the "Gospel Chops" team. It was a unique voice for a minute. SONNY!
Sonny has that rhythm. I favor his technique although Tony is very good.
Sonny has the best pocket in the game and so intricate and interesting and funky.
One makes noise robotically, the other has mastered drumming
Both have their own unique qualities!
