- A while back, I posted a shorter compilation similar to this one called Eat It Or Yeet It: Shayne Topp vs. Malic Acid. My goal with that video was to include all the times Shayne specifically had malic acid, but a lot of the comments on that video rightfully pointed out that there were some other "missing" moments where Shayne's grave mouth came into play on Eat It Or Yeet It and other Smosh Pit shows. Taste buds don't heal, if you lose a taste bud they are gonna forever basically.
@@NoOneImportant777 that is flat out about as far from the truth as can be. Taste buds are one of the fastest things in the body to regenerate.
Other misconceptions include different areas of the tongue containing taste buds for different flavors, like a sweet section and a sour section. Every taste bud can taste all 5 flavors of sweet sour salty bitter and umami.

People have suggested he might have Hypogeusia, and if he does, it could be linked to the fact that he drowned as a kid and it might’ve messed with a specific part of his brain, but because it happened at such a young age, it’s probably nothing out of the ordinary for him.
Somehow I misread this as he drowned a kid instead of he drowned as a kid. I panicked for a few seconds.

@@CorvusCorone68 idk much about the body and biology, but don't your taste buds replace every day? Sure they get worse as you get older which is why we can drink coffee when we get older. But I always thought that had to do with getting older, like how our skin wrinkles when we get older despite those cells changing a lol

The only thing that Shayne spit out was the fish paste and that was enough for Kevin to throw up. And Kevin tried the Surstomming Shake and said it was tasty.

It was chocolate peanut butter cups but the peanut butter was replaced with the fish paste.
What was in the fish paste? I grew up on pickled herring and fish egg paste, so throwing up from fish paste seems a bit unnecessary.

4:05 this was even more insane when watching the rest of the episode, the chef ate everything before that, especially the punishments, he swallowed everything without making a face (my favorite was *chew chew swallow* "oh yeah that's not good") but this was the ONE he spat out
That part always got me! It's so much better with the context of the prior yeetable encounters that he ate and barely reacted, yet this abysmally sour burger that Shane handled with relative ease was the thing that gave him a visceral reaction.
Josh didn’t even get one chew in, he just took a bite and let it fall out of his mouth

Okay, the malic acid thing just screams ageusia to me. Like, it's one thing to be used to something being extremely sour and handling it well, but a whole other to not even notice that something is sour until it curdles your stomach contents. Shayne might literally be physiologically or neurologically incapable of tasting sour properly and might have been since childhood.
agreed but i dont think itd be ageusia, it would be hypogeusia. augesia is a complete loss of taste whereas hypogeusia is a loss/diminished sensitivity to one specific taste. for him it might be sour foods. theres like no way he Doesnt have hypogeusia
@@carseatheadrestt Possible, but again, he seemingly does not even notice that it is supposed to be sour presumably until it attacks his mucous membranes in the back of the throat and oesophagus. And it's a lot of malic acid, so even if he only had a diminished taste of sour, he should still notice I would think.

I kinda envy him, i have it completelly oppositestuff tastes and smells expired a day or 2 before everyone else. And like 60-70% of conventional food is off limits for me because my body immediatelly tries to vomit it out even before i swallow. I can place a toothpick dipped in raw beet juice on my tongue and have such a reaction that i feel like my throat is twisted. But at least i can apreciate the stufd that i can eat
That's interesting. I am autistic and my sense of taste and texture is amplified. I can tell the difference in milk between different brands, by taste. I dislike many popular foods, but enjoy bland things. Like a slice of bread with nothing on it. I find spicy and bitter things incredibly hard to eat and can't stand most fluid textures. So drinking enough every day is a challenge. I'm very interested in conditions that have to do with taste and texture, cuz I've been confusing my entire family with my taste for years.

There’s also one that does the opposite. I can’t drink coffee or eat dark chocolate. It’s too bitter. I even tested it with a test strip in biochemistry.

As a kid I enjoyed sour candy so much I kept getting more and more sour candy to the point I just started enjoying straight citric acid from the tin. I officially reached the limit of what acid I can safely put on my tongue

Yeah I just remembered I had a friend with similar grave mouth, except his was because of getting 2nd-degree chemical burns on his tongue after eating a quarter-kilo (half pound) of malic acid-coated hard candies _all in one go._ He only realised his taste buds were shot when - 10 years later - we finally convinced him to try hot soup (this man had been eating every meal cold out of the refridgerator for AN ENTIRE DECADE) and lo and behold apparently the Food Which Should Be Hot actually tastes nicer when hot
After a certain amount of consuming sour things, it seems like you get used to it, like with spice. Various candies and "sour" drinks just aren't sour for me anymore. I eat lemons like oranges occasionally cause they are kinda the rare sour thing and they taste good. (Sparingly, as too much lemon juice can damage your teeth)
Malic acid is chemically pure sour. It’s not cause he ate sour stuff often
Lemons are bad for your teeth because it's acidic. Anything with a pH below 7 will be bad for your teeth.
Even just carbonated water can give acid burns on your teeth.

Shaynes condition is called Hypogeusia. It's a condition where you have an a decreased taste for sour, sweet, bitter or salty things.

I have grave mouth sometimes, too. my second cousin walked up to me once and gave me a ghost pepper season piece of popcorn (I thought it was normal popcorn, it was supposed to be a prank). it took me 5 minutes after walking around to process that my mouth was on fire.
Naw, that's just how ghost pepper works. Unless you eat just a straight up pepper, the spice slowly builds in your mouth

With the lemon juice his face did get a little red, so his body does get affected by it but he just doesnt know why, the same with the big amount of malic acid that was on the burger.

I get it when he barely reacts to sour stuff because things arent as sour to me as they are others because of something with my tongue that I can taste no issue (in fact I can usually pick tastes out super easy) but the receptors that pick up sourness are lacking or almost non-existent... I used to just straight drink Lemon Juice lol
