- The British Ambassador to Estonia has warned that the deployment of 800 British troops to the country as part of a NATO force is as crucial to the security of Berlin, London and Paris as it is to the security of the Baltics. Soldiers from 5 RIFLES, along with tanks and armoured vehicles, will be based just 80 miles from the Russian border when they head to the region next month.

People that say "They will flee like the Ukrainians".. You should do research on Estonia. During the first World War we had schoolboys volunteer to fight against russia, and actually pushed them back behind their border. The nation has its flaws, but the people that want to protect it, will.

It is actually quite misleading that every report say "Estonia has only 6000 troops"
This is peacetime, after mobilisation there will be 70000 soldiers, who have trained in independent Estonia, add at least ~10000 Defence League members (some people obviously joined Defence League after their conscription)

We have had it since we regained our independence. Or well, maybe even a bit earlier. It was established during Estonian War of Independence, when it acted like an armed home defence organization against the public disorder accompanying the Russian Revolution.
Provocative when Russian police invaded our border and arrested an Estonian police man inside Estonian Borders and kept and tortured him for 2 YEARS ! ! !

Estonians are by far one of the most reliable people in terms on military. They aren't the biggest but they're definitely the most headfast
The Soviets were peculiar in that they couldn't conceive of people being united for a common purpose on their own volition. Everything had to be done by force, by a boot kick to the head. No wonder Estonians are so adamant about their independence from the goons that were the Supreme Soviet.

The reporter should have done more research. There may be 6k active servicemen and conscripts, but the majority of EDF lies in reserves: the men that have already been through conscription. There are tens of thousands in reserves. During our war for independence there were close to 100k fighters in the front lines (including allies and volunteers).
Also Narva doesn't have a population of 6 thousand but around 60 thousand.

As a British citizen I feel horrible that all my country's politicians want to do is decrease our army when there is such a big threat and we wee the 5th powerful country in the world but we were taken over by France and are know 6th we are no longer the the military ruler of Europe and it's annoying we should be growing it like everyone else but no we aren't

John Bennett but our defence budget is 54 billion US dollars not 30 something but we need to increase a lot more we have a better economy then Russia which means we can make a much bigger army faster plus we spend billions of our budget on foreign aid

+Matsimus Gaming, I could not agree more. If it comes to war with Russia, our expeditionary force could easily get stuck on the front while Nato/Baltic inexperienced forces retreat/surrender around them. Last thing we need is Challenger 2 Dorchester armour being captured and reverse engineered
They didn't drop their arms in 1918 and they won their first independence with some help.
They were ordered by the gov't to drop their arms in 1940 and were relatively bloodlessly occupied.

Some of us have served. I recall similar times in Bosnia etc. If one wants to train and use weapons you can do. Some of us have had very good training. As you have had yourself, you point out. We in tge UK are not defenceless. I don't see why you would go on the internet and say we are. Even without serving in tgeforces one can shoot and can engage in training. Just choose wisely where, with whom and how.

NATO thinks it can fight russia because of how many countries are involved. Poland France, and the UK fought germany and look how that ended. If russia wanted the Baltic states. They could take them.

Dylan Valenti yeah, Hitler started it, after some initial success, he bit off more than he could chew and lost. If Putin did the same, it would end the same... putting the mutual nuclear destruction to one side of course. Either way, he’s not pulling off what he did in Ukraine, in the Baltic’s. But he knows what he’s doing, he’s as good as anyone in history at taking calculated risks.
We held the Soviets and pushed them back with the assistance of the British Fleet during our War of Independence, we shall do it again!
But seriously, we can hold the Russians alone for a lengthy period of time, our natural borders in the North of our country are perfect, the Southern defense, not so much. During WW2, when the Germans retreated out of Estonia, our forces stayed and held the North with tremendous success ( Battle of Tannenberg Line). Our only threat would be nukes, if they'd actually use them. Keep in mind, every male after the age of 18 has to go and serve, meaning we could conscript every male ( until the age of 40-50, I think?). I hope they won't remove that like our Southern neighbour Latvia ( they made it voluntary).

@@realramas Finland was forced to move their border, USSR did achieve the ultimate goal, so "kicking ass" does not exactly apply.
Now that the old cold war is over, we should not be fighting with Russia. There are mutual enemies to be dealt with and Russia could be a great help. They could, in the perfect world. become another cornerstone of NATO alliance. Take a few seconds to think about that, with respect to all the countries that border Russia.

Estonian has its own camo pattern, ESTDCU, a digital pattern not flecktarn. Reservists and militia use the AK4, Swedish variant of the G3, and regulars use the IMI Galil. They've also just purchased a ton of CV90s, Swedish also. Not German at all.
Neeh, as an EDL member I can assure you that we don't have anything german made here, if to disregard some cheap crap from Mil-Tec that breaks asap :D (and some MG3's, though EDL uses mostly swedish KSP-58).
Few fighters who don't have our own estonian camo yet for any reason, are using flecktarn and I personally bought a german (G3) cleaning kit for my swedish made service rifle- AK4.
Plus, as one commenter pointed out, good percentage of our people are running around with israeli-made weapons :)
