In 2012, an 85 year old woman named Marilyn Hagerty would write a seemingly innocuous food review for the Olive Garden restaurant located in her home town. After being published online, the review would get attention from high brow food critics and redditors. Many felt Marilyn’s review to be comically detailed to be written for a chain restaurant. She would face a wave of online mockery for some time. Today I tell you all the story of Marilyn’s Olive Garden Review, and how she turned the tables on her detractors.

Older people have such a rigid idea of what's proper and when. Like drinking lemonade on a cold day, calling after 8pm, watching a movie on a weekday etc. It's like any deviation from what's normal causes a short circuit. It's kinda hilarious.

When you stoop to making fun of an 85 year old woman who obviously loves and takes her job seriously, because a certain restaurant chain is beneath you, then you're nothing but a snob. I grew up in poverty and find pretentious attitudes such as this to be revolting.
I *so* agree. If you're going to choose to make fun of a person, choose to make fun of someone who wakes up each day, and opts to be a waste of space, with no redemptive qualities.
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
💯
Was in and out of homelessness as a teen/early 20s. Soup kitchens were where I ate most of my meals back then. I gotta say Olive Garden looks pretty good and fancier than Swiss Chalet. There's no Olive Garden around me, so I've never been. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable in an actual fancy, expensive restaurant. I was brought to one once. I was appalled at the prices and just wanted a poutine; which ofc such a place is above (fries, gravy, cheese curds.) The closest they had were pommes des frites; super skinny long French fries that were limp and tasted like disappointment. Perhaps they weren't properly made, idk, I just know they were overpriced and ruined fries by trying to fancify them. The fries weren't the worst of the experience, but certainly the most memorable 😅
Those people can be pretentious if they want. The rest of us keep it real and have a better time spending less money.
I'm also tired of 'big city' people constantly shit-talking small towns

She essentially took the classy way of saying "I don't have time for Redditors because I have a job and shit to do." Which is the most accurate and scathing retort she could have picked.
The flipside is that, if you're still having a job and too busy to interact with people online at 85...
I mean, you gotta stop the hustle at some point. Plus, most people have jobs and are busy. It's not like the trolls are spending hours of their lives hunting her down and tormenting her. They're probably going "Haha, look at this dumb review, I'm gonna take 2 minutes to tell her that it's dumb on my break."
Honestly, people who think "Wow, this person posted a mean comment. They obviously have no job and don't contribute to society at all because they could have used that one precious minute at work," is somehow even more sad. It's like confessing that you don't have any free time to yourself, and taking the time to respond like that shows the trolls that they won and makes their victory even sweeter because the "Lol, you suck," comments got to you because you didn't ignore them, you actively told them that despite your busy schedule and things to do you took time to tell them "Fuck off. I'm much better than you, and better than these comments. I'm above replying to you.... Wait..."

As someone who works as a server at the OG, it makes me teary-eyed that someone can be so delighted with such basic server etiquette, like going as far as to mention the delight of her server being ready with the cheese grater. It really is the little things, isn't it?
Yes. Thats why we like to give extra money to server in my country if they do good job and dont want the cooks and owner to have it. Tips are for service. The cooks get well paid anyway otherwise I wouldnt even eat there If I didnt expect good food. And the owner is a dick in most cases who makes the most in any way

When you live in a safe, rural Midwestern town, you best believe an Olive Garden opening is major positive news. Anthony was right - this is how America eats. All the best memories I have of eating out with friends and family are at places like Applebee’s, Souplantation (RIP), Denny’s and Texas Road House, not the fancy places. Birthdays, graduations, road trips, late night high school hangouts. Casual dining is where you go regularly because it is both affordable and a fun place to hang out, with atmosphere as homey as the company you keep. Dennys has crap service and mediocre food, but we still visit again and again on road trips because that is tradition. The beautiful thing about chain restaurants is consistency - you always know what kind of food and service you are going to get.
I’m also from the Midwest. Olive Garden isn’t gourmet, or authentic Italian, but it’s delicious and consistent. I love it!

Like picking out all the good places you gotta go
As someone from a small town, I can really attest to new restaurants and changes being a big deal, my town has 1,900 people, there are 2 bars, one coffee shop, one ice cream shop, one McDonald’s 1 Taco Bell, 2 diners (recently only one now) and one Italian restaurant, my town is fortunate enough to had a decent sized road running through it, it gets about the same traffic as an average suburban road, which can’t be said about most other small towns in the area. the Italian restaurant is actually pretty fancy, and does extremely well, as the main road in town is the best way from the Chicago suburbs to lake Geneva Wisconsin, there are many rich and middle class people alike that travel up to their lake houses or just for a day on the beach, which brings lots of traffic through town and to the local businesses, especially since we are directly on the border and the last good place to stop before about 20 miles of nothing. With all that probably unnecessary context,
I guess what I’m trying to say is changes in small towns are always big to the residents, when one of the diners closed recently, everyone was talking about it for weeks, whether that be by word of mouth or the town Facebook page. nothing goes unnoticed in a small town, and seemingly Mundine things in cities or suburbs can be a big deal.
I doubt anyone’s gonna actually read my comment because it’s way too long and far past the upload date of the video but there’s my two cents, thanks for reading.
I read it and you are absolutely right!
I never thought I’d run into someone from the same podunk town on a random RUclips comment thread haha.
On a related note, I will say that when the Olive Garden opened some years ago in the larger town nearby, it was quite the experience.
I like your comment very much and agree.
Only I'd like to mention that while Olive Garden claims to serve Italian cuisine they actually don't. It's American food, you won't find most of their dishes in Italy.
1,900 people...wow.
Ebro, Florida has less than 300 people! There's legit nothing except a poker room, a Subway, one motel (for the poker room), and a gas station. That's it.
I plan on living in a hamlet that doesn’t even have anything more than a gas station with basic food items, and a post office, The next closest town is only a 20 minute drive however it’s a town of 1600 people, one grocery store, a bar, a post office, a liquor store , a few gas stations cause it’s in the high way and some local restaurants but that’s it, no brand restaurants lol, for that u have to drive to Prince George or jasper

I think they resent Olive Garden because they do what these fancy overpriced restaurants do only they charge half the price and give you double the portion. They basically make a mockery of the defining status that strokes the egos of these snarky people. I don't care if I'm sitting in an alleyway or a palace if the food is good it don't matter.
I hate reddit so much.
@TheDodicat hate to break it to you but after 15 years in the food industry unless your going to a 5 star restaurant the food is going to be microwaved or flash cooked. It's a sad but true reality. Even small family restaurants that I've worked for have primarily used microwaves. I had to fight to make fresh dishes at my last place of employment. I literally had to show everyone (owner, other cooks, and management) that it was fast, easy and totally worth having the customer be happy with their food. It takes an extra few minutes to make something fresh vs frozen and microwaved as long as its prepped ahead of shift, but the restaurant industry is more interested in fast because people get upset when they have to wait 15 minutes for their food.
At one point you gotta argue do you give a bad review to a McDonalds that gives you good service, hot food, and quick? I mean expectation of some people is kinda crazy.
I’d say McDonald’s deserves a good review unless the people working are being shitty people or being rude of course
@@Suddsy4L Yeah I'd say that's fair for a general review. I think stuff like "Report of the week" work because he reviews individual food items but I still think that's different then what Marilyn does. Like- its fast/chain food. Its going to taste like fast/chain food.
@Lex Baker Yep. I live in Russia and here poor people do not go to McDonald's anymore.
Even in india McDonald's is pretty expensive but that is because of specific tax laws on foreign companies makes McDonald's food much more expensive compared to local restaurants. At least for the kind of food they are serving.

I grew up in a sh*t-hole small town and I was genuinely excited every time I got to go to Olive Garden, Red Lobster or Applebee's. It were all good and all we had really.
I loved the local restaurants more, but they weren't nice sit-down places with wine and stuff, that you could enjoy with the whole family.
And good for her for figuring out how to politely tell everyone to shove off. :)

Yep! We had to drive an hour and a half to get to the nearest town of more than 10,000. It was there that you’d find those chain places. And yes, eating out at Olive Garden was and still is, a treat!
I will forever be grateful for my small town upbringing. Going to one of those "fancy" restaurants you will see on tv commercials like red lobster were huge deals, you really appreciated it even if they are mid level at best. I feel bad for the snobs but good for me in what it takes to appreciate something and to get more out of it. I can go to one of these places and be a happy camper and enjoy the whole experience. These snobs have to go somewhere that costs at least twice as much and (imo) are way less comfortable due to being in an upper class establishment. They have less appreciation, probably enjoyed it less and it cost them more, I am perfectly happy letting those snobs keep those places to themselves and I will go to an olive garden and have a great time.

Her column makes all the sense in the world. I'm happy she handled all the hate with grace. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since she's no doubt tougher than any one of those redditers.

I don't think this lady is lonely
She probably knows everyone at this small town
Her review was friggin' adorable and wholesome The "humble grandma" vibe leaps right off the page.
Anyone that mocked this woman ought to educate themselves and learn some humility. Marilyn is a columnist for the Grand Forks Herald. Grand Forks suffered a huge flood of the Red River about 20 years ago. Most of the city was flooded. Most of the staff was flooded out of their homes. To make matters worse, the Herald's building caught on fire and efforts to save it came from fire fighting barges floating on downtown streets. Despite this hellish situation, people flooded from their homes and burned out of their offices, the Grand Forks Herald managed to publish their newspaper, using remote offices and presses, every single day throughout the flood which lasted several weeks. The staff was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Community Service for their efforts. I don't know if Marilyn was considered staff or not, but she was part of the effort.
So, if you are one that mocked her over a simple review, be aware that she earned a Pulitzer prize for her service to the community. Who are you to criticize her? Get away from your keyboard and do something positive.
I live in a nearby town. I remember all of this. Small town people are resilient.
Used to live on the air force base around when that happened. Freaked me the hell out.

Wow. I'm in Aotearoa so had no idea. Kudos to everyone involved. After the quakes that practically leveled my city in 2010 and 2011 we were so grateful for the extraordinary efforts some businesses made so l can imagine how much that newspaper managing to publish actually meant to the inhabitants of GF. Also, reviews are supposed to be your own opinion, fancy bullying someone because their genuine review doesn't match your food snobbery. Shame on them.
When my small town got a McDonalds, everyone lost their minds. The line was out the door. I had a $75 a week McDonalds habit for the first 6 months! You would have thought Gordon Ramsey had opened a restaurant there.
McDonald's rolled into my grandparent's backwoods alabama town and LOST to Hardee's. McDonalds moved out 3 months later. Now that's some deep south shit!
@Roger Dodger Exactly. I'll even throw one a bit further and suggest Hardee's is better than Carl's Jr. No, I don't not believe they are completely the same thing.
Students skipped school when McDonald's opened in my small town. Although we had other better places to eat from it was just good to have something different. Same thing happened when we finally got a Olive Garden.

I’m an Aussie who went to the Olive Garden in Ann Arbor Michigan and I had an awesome experience the staff were amazing, food was good and as a tourist I was glad of the affordable prices so I’ve always wondered why everyone pays out on Olive Garden
I'm another Aussie who also loved going to those places in the US! Probably because we really don't have anything like that over here, so it is a bit of a novelty, I guess ... But I also had a really good experience there. It is what it is, and why can't we just enjoy it for that? It is stupid to compare an establishment like that to a Michelin starred restaurant or whatever. (And even dumber for those online trolls to criticize this lady for knowing that her job entails not doing that!)
Wild that you named one of only two Olive Garden locations I have ever dined at in my life 😂😂
Man, most people that shit on Olive Garden haven't even been, they just let memes & Family Guy jokes tell them it's bad. Olive Garden is a perfectly nice place to have a family meal. They're usually very professional, & they even give you unlimited breadsticks. Honestly, it's just the masses trying to be cool by shitting on what's popular to shit on.
Carol: Well, to be fair, it was a mediocre (at best) Italian place re the food, and they tried to play it up like it was a big deal. So that was kind of silly, but it's what marketers DO. But for me, I MUCH preferred various hole in the wall Italian eateries with good food and far less decor at similar prices. Kind of like how I love good hole in the wall chinese places over fancy chains, etc.
But yeah, aside from the marketing it was just "meh", not nearly bad enough to hate on.
This is like the equivalent of our own la porchetta ay lol. Love these places
Just found this video and, as a Grand Forks resident, I appreciate the way you covered the story.
Marilyn is still goin strong. She writes these reviews so visitors to GF will have an idea of what to expect. You'll never see Marilyn say a bad word about a restaurant, but you can tell if she doesn't like the food - she'll compliment the napkins or the parking lot.
(We actually do have one 4-star restaurant here. I've eaten there only once, when someone else was picking up the tab.)
Are you referring to Sky’s? If so, yeah. Sky’s is really nice.
Hot damn the level of sass: "compliments the napkins", like this lady is amazing. I love her.
Lol. Classy lady. Clearly grew up in an era when it was poor form to bad mouth someone and gets around it by not mentioning the faults. The absence of compliments actually speaks volumes.
I noticed the compliments included in this video had nothing to do with how she thought the food tasted. I'm not saying she did or did not include that in her original review, bit would be interesting to know.
Also from grand forks!
I...love...her!
She's basically everyone's encouraging and positive grandma.

The town I grew up in was so small that we had a parade when they opened a Walgreens. I can’t imagine what we would have done if they had opened an Olive Garden.
We don’t even have a Walgreens in my town
A parade???
I grew up in a small town (1,450 people) with a spinach festival. We didn’t have anything fancy since we were a “thru town”, which meant truckers and travelers just drove through it. Our Walmart even closed on Sundays. We had two small grocery stores and outside of fast food there was a motel restaurant. That’s it. All the good restaurants were about an hour away, so if we got a good restaurant we’d have had a parade, too. 😂
My dads town had a parade for the Walmart they were opening up and it wasn’t even a super center 😂 it is seriously small but a big deal for the small town. They only have 2,500 people in the town(they had a population boom due to oil) but there’s so many smaller towns around they got a Walmart.
Hahahah I thought my small town was like that. That’s awesome. We created a “festival” to honor David Cricket’s wife just to have something to do that also honored small restaurant businesses

I can only agree with you. Growing up in a not-so-well-off household here in Europe, simply eating outside our home has always been considered a treat in our family. I mean yeah, the review is mildly humorous, but mostly adorable. Let's be honest, though, we make fun of people from small towns who enjoy chain restaurants to make ourselves feel better. We want to believe living in a large "cultured metropolis" makes us superior, which is just really pathetic at the end of the day.
I live in a small town, it's like a hillbilly version of Gilmore Girls and I an sure metro people would make fun of me...but I actually moved to this town to get the heck away from metro areas in general. I am from Phoenix and honestly don't miss it one bit.
Nope. Getting excited about the Olive Garden is wrong and stupid. I consider it a complete indictment of one's character. Not because Olive Garden has low status compared to 5 star establishments you might find in big cities. I lived in a small town in East Texas for awhile, and I got excited about this little taqueria I found in the back of a mexican restaurant that sold $1.50 tacos, because they were incredible. The tortillas were hand made from scratch, and everything was fresh, and it wasn't a carbon copy of something I can get in 10,000 places across North America. I have no preoccupation with the prestige of high cuisine.
Call me elitist. Call me pretentious. I'm comfortable with that. At least I don't get excited to sit down inside some tacky strip mall franchise purgatatory liminal hellscape to eat food designed in a laboratory by a corporation.
@@AMurderOfLobs Everything you said makes complete sense. The question is...why do you care if someone else does? How is your life negatively affected in any way, shape, or form?
Putting people down for something like this reveals a lot more about you than it does about them. You want to feel superior to her, but anyone who makes such an extreme judgement about someone else for liking Olive Garden has some insecurities to work out. She seems like a happier individual than you.
@@jasonshaneyfelt1039 It affects me because it supports the further proliferation of the disguisting franchise business model that has made every community in this country look the exact same. From the suburbs of San Bernardino,CA in the southwest, to the suburbs of Portland, Maine in the northeast, it's just strip malls upon strip malls of the same soulless, cookie cutter, uninspired bullshit. The attitude supports the eradicaition of any semblance of charm that small towns used to have, when mom and pop shops offered cherished family recipes that nobody else knew and are now extinct. Olive Garden's fake decor is trying to imitate the character of Italy. Meanwhile America has lost it's character, because of Olive Garden (and Subway, and Macaroni Grill, and Panda Express, etc, etc).

Extra crazy part is, even if you did not know anything about the town, the history of her work (chain restaurant reviews), or her age. (If a fancy new restaurant received a review like this in intense market they would probably right it off as a bad review because it is so mellow.)
This story brought tears to my eyes.
They weren’t for Marilyn, I admire her and feel that she’s just fine.
It’s because I feel terribly sorry for those who feel they must disparage others
simply to feel better about themselves.
This is the wholesome review for Olive Garden
"After a lengthy wait for Olive Garden to open in Grand Forks, the lines were long in February. The novelty is slowly wearing off, but the steady following attests the warm welcome.
My first visit to Olive Garden was during midafternoon, so I could be sure to get in. After a late breakfast, I figured a late lunch would be fashionable.
The place is impressive. It's fashioned in Tuscan farmhouse style with a welcoming entryway. There is seating for those who are waiting.
My booth was near the kitchen, and I watched the waiters in white shirts, ties, black trousers and aprons adorned with gold-colored towels. They were busy at midday, punching in orders and carrying out bread and pasta.
It had been a few years since I ate at the older Olive Garden in Fargo, so I studied the two manageable menus offering appetizers, soups and salads, grilled sandwiches, pizza, classic dishes, chicken and seafood and filled pastas.
At length, I asked my server what she would recommend. She suggested chicken Alfredo, and I went with that. Instead of the raspberry lemonade she suggested, I drank water.
She first brought me the familiar Olive Garden salad bowl with crisp greens, peppers, onion rings and yes -- several black olives. Along with it came a plate with two long, warm breadsticks.
The chicken Alfredo ($10.95) was warm and comforting on a cold day. The portion was generous. My server was ready with Parmesan cheese.
As I ate, I noticed the vases and planters with permanent flower displays on the ledges. There are several dining areas with arched doorways. And there is a fireplace that adds warmth to the decor.
Olive Garden has an attractive bar area to the right of the entryway. The restaurant has a full liquor license and a wine list offering a wide selection to complement Italian meals. Nonalcoholic beverages include coolers, specialty coffees and hot teas.
On a hot summer day, I will try the raspberry lemonade that was recommended.
There's a homemade soup, salad and breadstick lunch available until 4 p.m. daily for $6.95.
An olive branch on menu items signified low-fat entrees. There is a Garden Fare Nutrition Guide available for customers seeking gluten-free food. And for those with food allergies, Olive Garden has an Allergen Information Guide.
All in all, it is the largest and most beautiful restaurant now operating in Grand Forks. It attracts visitors from out of town as well as people who live here.
Olive Garden is part of the Darden chain of restaurants that also operates Red Lobster. There are about 700 restaurants, including four Olive Gardens in North Dakota's major cities.
Olive Garden has gained a following since 1982 with its ample portions and relaxed ambience. It's known for its classic lasagna, fettuccine Alfredo and chicken Parmigiana."
That's... Not even that positive of a review. "Yes, this place exists, they did a nice job with the interior decor, the food was decent".
Thanks for the transcript. That's a well written review. Informative, balanced and something l would hope to read if l was going somewhere I didn't know.
Good for her and shame on the food snobs.
Honestly, that sounds good lol. And that is cheap. You can't even get McDonald's for those prices now, it's horrible how expensive fast food has gotten. Maybe I should get my ass to an Olive Garden.
@@pixelghostclyde8717 Yeah, but no Ill intent was meant from it, so it’s still pretty positive, plus it’s her job to talk in detail about not only the food but of the restaurant in general, which is the case for most if not all reviews regarding food, like ReviewBrah for example.
Wow, no comment about the taste. I guess she had nothing good to say about the food, so she said nothing about it at all.
This really is one of the sweetest tales you've ever covered... I really hope those people are ashamed of themselves..... I mean trolling is o e thing, and ya haha , but to launch an all out attack on an 85 year old woman in a tiny town living her best life is just inexcusable.... I cam guarantee if they had ever lived in a tiny town that has two restaurants and everything closes at 8pm (never lived in a place like that, but I've stayed in em traveling)... They'd be just as excited and enthusiastic as this woman was. And good on that chef dude for stepping up and doin all he did for her. Even if he was kinda trying to benefit himself... He's famous enough that he didn't need to. And good on you wavy I really love the way you approach your videos, I've been a subscriber for some time now. You and justin whang are my favorite creators of this type of content.
Probably a bit unfair to say that the late Anthony Bourdain was "trying to benefit himself" in some way.
I'd imagine that probably stepped up for no reason other than he wanted to show some support to this wonderful lady.
As you've said yourself, "he didn't need to".
As a celebrity chef he had it all before this even began, so any benefits would have been minimal, if there at all.
Anyway, I agree with everything else you've stated, so I'm not criticising your comment - just disagreeing with that small aspect. ✌️
The fact that they thought attacking old people is a thing anyone should do is terrible and sometimes i wonder when did common sense leave this nation
Jessica Francis work in The Villages, Fl for any extended period of time and that opinion will change very quickly lmao
@@ianmacfarlane1241 I didn't really mean he was trying to, I just meant that even if it wasn't purely unselfish... like no matter what his endgame was it was still awesome he did it
@Darth Revan its all good, not how I meant it, but I ain't sweatin it
that is wholesome as hell. i don’t get the internet sometimes.
hi joseph joestar
Wow. You’re cool.

Marilyn, you rock!!!! I live in a town in western WA, where all the fast food is awful. Even IHOP is terrible. But...we have a wonderful Olive Garden! Don't let the haters get you down, I loved your review!
Yeh, can she review a Waffle House next?
She's so unbothered it's inspiring
The way you went after the Reddit neckbeards brought a tear of joy to my eye. Subbed.
I KNOW ! The gif of the man dancing sums it up. Imagine getting an ego boost from picking on random internet strangers. No thanks.
It makes me insanely depressed seeing an old sweet lady being harrassed
This generation has no respect for anyone.
The United states doesnt, other countries do. This is a capitalistic society and are worth what u bring in
Same. It makes me sad and I feel bad for her.
@@bm373 Wtf does capitalism have to do with attacking elderly women?
@@bm373 lmao
Their bottomless breadsticks and salad is still the bomb.. it’s crazy how no one figured out that Haggerty’s job was to make living in Grand Forks seem survivable, imagine having that job!!! and she seemed to take it seriously.. good for her
Let's also admit there's a huge amount of unconscious classism going on here: there's a good 10% of this country for which going to Olive Garden just once a month (and yes, forgoing the strawberry lemonade for water) would be a strain on their budget.
I don’t think she was paying for the meal. She was writing a column.
@@richardvinsen2385
What is it with y'all/the world these days & being so obtuse about the POINT of people's comments??
Regardless of whether she paid for that particular meal or her job paid for it, the OP's comment/point remains valid.
@@snippets981 Reviews are supposed to be unbiased. If the reviewer is being paid by Olive Garden or whoever to write the review, no one can trust that it’s unbiased.
@@richardvinsen2385
She wasn't paid by Olive Garden, she was being paid by the newspaper she works for -that's how reviews work. Almost all reviews are paid for.
@@snippets981 I never said otherwise.
Anthony was such a cool and compassionate person. Rip legend
Two years ago today. Can you believe it?
Good on you for mentioning how chain restaurants can really excite in a small town. My town of 35k lost it's shit when we got a chili's. Myself included.
Gatekeeping is so cringey and awful.
I don't understand comments like this. I come from a town smaller than that (20,000) and we have Chili's, OG and many more. the hell is this
@@MelancoliaI 25-30 years ago, chain restaurants were just starting to boom. That's the time period I was describing. Do you think that small, 200 year old towns just came pre-built with chain restaurants?
It isn't hard to understand comments like that. Town originally didn't have a thing -> town gets that thing -> it's a big deal in the town. I'm barely in my 30's, but I remember a time when my town's only "chain" sit-down restaurant was a sizzler. That was it.
@@colinmartin9797 Do you think it's a state/region thing? For example, I'm from southwest PA. Every mid-small town in my area is surrounded by chain restaurants, a couple downtown, most situated in the greater area.
EDIT: And it's been that way for years too
@@MelancoliaI Definetly a region thing. My childhood town (18,000) got a burger king a few years back and everyone i knew was super stoked about it. That was like the only non-local chain apart from one pizza place.
@@verqu3450 Mind if I ask what state you live in? IDK, in my part of PA it's not hard to find any chain you're looking for, except White Castle. I have no idea what White Castle has against the state of Pennsylvania.
