Lucky shot
this is the plane that is most likely to be mistakenly identified as a UFO back in the days given it's unusual diamond like shape.
And weird flying patterns. It would at times suddenly swoop to its side due to the lack of aerodynamics.
@@urawesome4670 mlm
For sure. If ya seen some of the old concept models and testing prototypes then you’d be even more convinced it was alien back then. Some of their earlier models that made it to testing looked even more bizarre during that time than this final product.
UFOs usually don't make any noise which means they are silent, while this stealth aircraft sounds loud like AF due to its mechanical engine, there is a big difference between UFOs and this stealth aircraft.
One of the coolest looking planes ever
The only user of this plane besides the USA is Serbia, since March '99. is part of the Aviation Museum in Belgrade.
No , the baby of Kelly Johson at Skunk Work was used previously in the Gulf war. And fortunately Dale Zelko and Zoltan Dani became friends like broders in 2012.

Politics got that plane shot down. Our president made the mistake of giving Russia our flight paths for "safety". The Serbs new where and when it was going to be there.

Despite some shortcomings, I love the angular design, and not having any curved surfaces adds to the cool futuristic look. Still looks outta this world.
probably would benefit production processes and maintenance too
@@nunyabusiness8538 Can the nighthawk shoot bullets or no
@@onm2050 No guns or cannons on the nighthawk. It's bomb bays do not allow firing of missiles, nor does it have a radar to allow it to fire at anything anyway. Even if it had cannons or heat seeking missiles, it would be hard pressed to use them as it operates at night and has no radar (so it can't see anything) and it's speed an handling makes it almost impossible to dog fight anything close (even if it could see them). It's FIR system looks down.
The angular design wins

Not thrue , No, by official NATO reports. The planes that were shot down were F-16, F-117 and around 45 UAV-s, 45 cruise missiles, some AH-64 Apache.

Serbia decommissioned these so called stealth airplanes. I guess US never had never came across such small yet powerful country.
Since they predicted where the nighthawks were going at the same path and only the nighthawks were being used at night. But only after the nighthawks had been bombing Serbia a good while. Now that everyone is copying Serbia to have low frequency to detect stealth planes, it would pick up anything that uses low frequency which is about anything from a stealth plane to a literal microwave
I got to see one of these fly overhead on the day my enlistment ended as I was leaving Edwards AFB, Ca. It always felt special because they were pretty new at the time (1992) and I pretended it was a sendoff salute for me :) Sure was cool looking flying over the desert.
Badass, which lays now in Belgrade Airforce Museum. Parts of it actualy 😂
That's right, they didn't mention a Nighthawk being shot down in the European conflict in the 1990's in this video
Yep. It was hit on sight and not by radar guided missile. It's ok, we got your guy. 🤣🤣🤣
@Varangian Guard What in the world are you talking about ?
I said the F117 is still a very capable low observable aircraft compared to the more advanced F22 and F35.
If you're laughing because ONE F117 was shot down, that had nothing to do with stealth during that track.
@Varangian Guard Baghdad 1991 was one of the most heavily defended cities on the planet and every F117 completed it's mission and returned.

Hello from 2023. I cannot believe this craft is 40 years old! I have watched a few vids explaining why it was supplanted, but it's still a looker and can still do a job.
Worked on her 85-89 at Area51. Her first flight was June 1981.

Sure you did
I remember hearing the designers labeled it as a Fighter as opposed to the proper title as a light bomber so they could get the best pilots interested. I had a friend flying the refueling boom over Iraq at the beginning of the war. There were guys in suits on the refueling plane which was very odd. At some point they approached my fried and all of a sudden there was the F 117 that nobody had seen.. the suits were guys from skunkworks and directed my friend how to refuel it.
I don’t see them “practicing” or “instruction” on how to refuel a F-117 during an active combat sortie.
Tanker crew as well as f-117 crew both need to pass quals (air-air rf) BEFORE going into a combat sortie situation.
I do see maybe them offering assist in the 80’s during testing BEFORE Air Force went operational, then air force just took over all training.
F-17 first flight was ‘83 desert storm was in ‘91. Air Force learned how to refuel long before the 90’s! They actually learned when the prototype YF-117 was being tested.
@@richardstoffel6585 my friend out of Plattsburgh NY. Who was operating the boom never had any training with the F-117. Fact!
@@micjam1986 interesting. How things are now I know, is every boom operator is suppose to be qualified to refuel the type of aircraft they connect too. And typical military standards, you are not allowed to qualify during a mission. Especially a high stake one like that. So that is a very rare thing, must of got a reward for! Curious as to why they did it that way. I know for a fact they had boom operators qualified to refuel f-117’s at that time. Maybe they couldn’t get them relocated fast enough? But why send Lockheed guys out vs an instructor ? I’m puzzled and want more info on this lol you don’t hear too many stories like this that go against standards
@@richardstoffel6585if it’s top secret at that point it’s likely they didn’t want any training manuals getting around so they put two guys in the refuel plane.
I remember when testor came out with the first model and how the government wanted to know who leaked the stats on the plane to build such an accurate model but testor had used the hand out photo and asked about the pad size the plane sat on at the briefing which wasn't classified and reverse engineered the model from that.
The 4 aircraft that challenged aircraft design and look absolutely amazing doing it. The SR-71 family, F-117, B-2 and YF-23.
Very proud to have been selected for this program in my career back in the 80’s. Also some are still flying today around our old stomping grounds in NV. Good to see them again.

I read about this plane in The Skunk Works a book about secret airplane design and Lockheed Martin
I wonder what WWI pilots would have made of this plain, when they ask why it looks the way it does, we would have to explain to them that Radar is invented to detect aircraft and this plain is designed to minimize it's Radar cross section.
lmao..you're right..The Brit obviously had radar. The Germans had it too but deemed it unnecessary.
Funny enough, it was “officially retired” but they didn’t deconstruct them like they said they would, and we still actually use the f-117 a lot these days for air to ground.
Yep the F 117 looks like something from the future! It looks like it should be a star fighter. My fav design! Id love to see an F 117 modernized and have a retractable cannon! Thatd be so cool!!!

The F-117 Nighthawk is a American single-seat, twin-engine stealth aircraft that was developed by Lockheed's secretive Skunk Works division and operated by the USAF. It was the first operational aircraft to be designed around stealth technology. Another oddity around the same time was the half-black, half-metallic 79-10784, another one of the FSD [full-scale development] jets, which was trialed under the SENIOR SPUD program in July 1993. Over the course of four test flights, these metallic areas were apparently used to evaluate ways of reducing infrared signature, Paul F. Crickmore records, with the jet flying together with the NKC-135A Flying Infrared Signature Technology Aircraft (FISTA). It’s not clear how successful that was, but, in terms of visual signature, the metallic panels made the jet highly conspicuous in the daytime, at least. Similar testing continues to this very day, including using other surrogate aircraft.
Looks amazing.

Such a beautiful aircraft. I saw 2 F117 in formation with a B2 when I was 6, taking off from WPAB. or maybe I didn't...
At 3:17 it talked about the difficulty to arrange for air refueling the 117. If air refueling is required, it is always included in the flight plan, and has already been coordinated with the designated tanker unit. I was an air force air refueler for 20 years, and refueled the 117 multiple times, both day and night.
thats so awesome
I love its design.
Still has that COOL FACTOR!
I'm sure our adversaries we're crapping their pants when this jet in the 80's! USA USA
I always like this plane, so futuristic for its time. are they in museums or still in cold storage in case its needed again?
FYI the beginning scene in this video looks like the Fresno ANG base where 2 F-117s was recorded taking off and landing along with 2 F-15s a few months ago. Presumably they were providing training to the F-15s to help then detect, track, and fight against stealth/low observable aircraft. There are multiple RUclips videos of this event so obviously some are still able to fly. While some are in cold storage at Tonapah since "retirement" I do believe they are scheduled to be demilitarised in the near future. Just not all have been for now.
Also according to Wikipedia there are several F-117s on static display and at the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio.
Hill AFB Museum in Utah is getting one.
I saw one in cold storage
Some are still flying domestically but I’m not sure what for.
To this day this is still the icon drawing of a stealth fighter. Much like a dial phone is still an icon of a phone in 2022

Such a sexy plane. Still looks futuristic
I was assigned to this program from 1986-1989 at Tonopah Test Range, NV. Upon my retirement in 1989, I was presented with a flag that had been flown aboard the first daylight flight by Col A.Tolin. Not my favorite assignment by any means, but probably, the most important.
Magnificent aircraft. Any plane, even stealthy ones on occasion are shot down!
By the way it's not visible on radio because the paint will basically eat the radio waves so it can't go back to show where it is at the radio
decreased visibility actually, but not enough not to be shot down
I remember the first time I saw one landing at my hometown (and now closed) Myrtle Beach AFB. It flew directly in front of me as I was driving down US Hwy 17, our main street. What a thrill!

The F-117 Nighthawk is first stealth bomber who shot down by Serbian Air Defense in 1999.
Looks like something out of halo like a prelude to the long sword
I remember seeing one of these at an air show in the mid 90s. I still remember as a kid how insane it looked. Still have the poster!
The Convair Kingfish and Boeing's Model 853 Quiet Bird, long preceded "the original stealth plane". The F-117 was just the first to use a supercomputer to calculate the rcs from every angle. Still, the sr-71 and U-2 are considered 1st generation stealth jets. The U-2 ruled the skies over Russia for almost half a decade.
It may be retired now, but it's still my favorite aircraft!!!

Sorry,we didnt know it was invisible
It was also retired because one was shot down in Serbia.
@Massimo Hack yes, right
@Massimo Hack F117 was shot down in 1999 by the Serbian Army during the Aggression against Yugoslavia (Serbia an Montenegro)
@Massimo Hack luck had nothing to do with it...it was an exceptionally trained and highly skilled unit that used its equipment to the maximum of its potential......and it wasnt just ONE hit....one plane was shot down and fell on Yugoslav territory, another one made it back to the base badly damaged and was written off after, with accounts from people involved (from US side)stating now(after 20 years) of another (third) plane being hit and slightly damaged.......as for your claim "serbs asked for it"-that is another can of worms i don't want to open here
@Massimo Hack ofc they knew the plane was coming...they were coming every day.....with the equipment they were using the plane had to come to under 20 km from them to lock on and fire on it and to give the pilot minimum time to evade......and this particular unit fired on targets only 7 times during whole conflict that lasted 77 days and in return they were engaged 16 times by anti radar missiles with no hits(in fact they were the only unit with operational radar by the end, rest were taken out).....they shot down F 117 and F-16( both fell on Yugoslav territory and parts of both planes can be seen in museum, seen them myself),there were claims of more possible hits but no proof(no wrecks)....so yes they were good....the were trained enough to lock on targets(which was done manually) fast, they were smart enough to avoid being detected...in fact F-16 they shot down was a part or radar hunting group that was looking for them, since NATO did figure out in what area were they operating from and that they pose danger to air operations

Stealth technology was invented by a Russian Soviet scientist - Ufimtsev Peter Yakovlevich in 1962 "The method of edge waves in the physical theory of diffraction".
@@kuckoo9036 The reason for this is that Americans often forget to indicate the author of their developments, whose ideas they used. A striking example is the periodic table of chemical elements, which was created by the great Russian scientist Mendeleev. It is studied in all schools and universities in the United States, but nowhere is it mentioned who its author is. Concealment of authorship subsequently leads to its erasure in history and the appropriation of other people's developments to other people and countries. Why do Americans do this if the US also has copyright. Or does it exist only within the country and does not apply to the whole world?
exactly! Kelly Johnson people of Skunk Works had read the translation of russian publications .
