Antique Hand Made Hatchet Restoration

  • Amateur restoration of an old hatchet, axe magnet fished in the Canal du Midi (south of France)
It was hand forged and probably dates back to the time of the Canal's manufacture in the 17th century.
It was extremely rusty when it was found and its condition does not allow it to be made like new. We have tried to reproduce the manufacturing techniques of the time for the handle.
If you have any advice on how to improve our restoration work, leave us a comment!

We have dated the hatchet by its manufacturing technique, common in the 17th century. These axes, called "trade axes" were massively traded by the French in the United States and Canada from the 1650s.

You're full of crap. If it is that old, it belongs in a museum and it can't be as steel wasn't used in Europe till 1859 for axes.

    • @WesW3187
      @WesW3187 3 года назад +11

@@0827Woody That’s incorrect. Steel production on mass wasn’t around until the mid 19th century, but steel production on a lesser scale was around since the 16th century. That aside, the kind way you commented leaves a bit to be desired.

Try white vinegar sometimes for rust. Submerge the item and let it soak over night. Works surprisingly well. Cheap and non toxic. This was such an extreme case I would be curious to see how it works on something like this. But it has worked very well for me on several items that weren't quite as extreme as this.

    •  2 года назад +3

Thanks a lot for this comment ! You are true, vinegar is frequently the solution for less extreme cases, we used it for the restauration of the pieces of a 1874 rifle

    • @robertmyers8409

Must be careful with the vinegar. You allow it to sit too long and it will soften the metal and find its way through it and cause internal veins. It will cause the metal to break.

When making the handle it helps to make a template of the hole in the axe head or stick a pencil thru and trace the outline of the inside of the hole onto the end of the roughed handle. Then it will be an exact fit.

These hatchets or trade axes started out as an iron strap which was then folded around a form to create the reverse eye, after which the strap was hammer-welded together to form the blade. Early trade axes made prior to about 1750 for the American fur trade fell out of favor with the Indians because they were made totally of iron and dulled very easily. In order to maintain their desirability as a trade item, in the latter half of the 18th century a steel insert was sandwiched into the cutting edge of the blade. Quite often a guild mark or some punch mark or series of marks was set into the blade to identify the maker.

When you are putting in the wedge, fold a piece of the paper from the outside of a birch tree over the edge of the wedge that is going in. This stuff is full of friction and the wedge will not work its way out of they will often do. You can use birch bark also to pull a needle through when having a tough time sewing.

Personal opinion, I would have taken a heavy duty wire wheel to it versus the sanding disk to preserve more of the material. Or perhaps use a sandblaster. Then do the electricity technique (or personally preferred "Rust-oleum"). But, you're gonna do what you can afford at the time just to simply make the content. Cool axe and all but, it would be more satisfying if you invested in more prominent tooling and machining. Over all, not terrible work. Keep going in on your ambitions man

Wow thats crazy you an definitely tell it was forged by hand thats for sure 300 years old I dont know about that one but hey who know well done tho

    •  3 года назад +1

Thanks a lot! We estimated the 300 years with the forging technique, regarding the time in water we will never really know but the thickness of the rust gives an idea,
If you want to know more about this type of axe, here are some explanatory links about their history and the forging technique scavengeology.com/french-trade-axes/

Nice work. One of the few restoration videos I've seen where the electrolysis was done after the grinding. To me that makes much more sense. Just used as a final step to remove rust from within the pitting. Really well done.

Thank you so much, it's nice to see someone with the same opinion as me about electrolysis !

Sure enough thought it was going to break. The way you were whacking it with the metal bar. Glad it didn't. Keep up the good work and restorations. You may want to add a couple chain saw files and hacksaw to your tool Arsenal.

    •  Год назад +1
