      I first saw him in the original TV series "V" back in the 80s. In addition to his badass roles in movies and TV, Michael Ironside is also a terrific voice-over actor. His over the top performance Heavy Metal 2000 is one of my favorites.

      Hes always good, and sometimes his best friend Mickey Jones (Died in 2018) is in same project, Total Recall he is man on train on Mars, got spoken lines, that extra pay.
      Seen them together first in 1984 in V tv series. Space themed this would had fit in his TY and movie roles, but he was 9 year older than Ironside and heavier build.
      Mickey Jones may be more famous from playin drums with Trini Lopez, Bob Dylan and Kenny Rogers.

    Fun film fact: The bug biology teacher was played by Rue McClanahan aka Blanche from the Golden Girls.
    -the head military trainer was played by Clancy Brown, best known for playing The KURGAN and voicing Mr Krabs.
    -The cast refused to do the nude shower scene unless the director got naked, in hopes of getting it cancelled... He got naked and it got filmed.

    This is the last of Paul Verhoeven's Sci Fi Trifecta movies - (RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers). All of them have Dark Satire, Campy Dialogue, Over-The-Top Violence, and some Deeper Social Commentary underneath it all.

    • @AnarchyShogun
      @AnarchyShogun 2 месяца назад +8

      "We're the bad guys" is definitely what Verhoeven was TRYING to say. The problem is from everything he actually shows in the film the Humans are objectively justified as they are fighting for literal survival. The Mormon colonists at the beginning are implied to have provoked the bugs by settling on their planet, but they did that against the express instructions of the government, and that doesn't justify a xenocidal war. There's also the fan theory that the strike on Buenos Ares is Carmen's fault, as running her ship into the asteroid could have diverted it into hitting the earth, but that's basically just speculation. Outside of those two things we are objectively shown that the bugs initiated a first strike against earth and attacks on several other human occupied planets.

    • @vorthothecarpathian
      @vorthothecarpathian 2 месяца назад

      Nah, we're the good guys. What the bugs did would basically be like if the American government nuked Mexico City because of illegal immigration from Mexico.

    • @GeryonM
      @GeryonM 2 месяца назад +5

      @@AnarchyShogun to hit anywhere on planet earth is Astronomically insane. Klandathu is shown to be on the other side of the galaxy. With all the moving parts i.e. 🌎 rotation, orbit around the sun, the sun's orbit around galactic center, and its wobble through the galactic plane vs all that on Klandathu happening. To be able to hit our marble from 100 million light years away it is more believable that her hitting that asteroid or the earth goverment did it than the bugs.
      Then let's think about how long it would have taken for it to travel to us. If the bugs did do it they started this attack shortly after the planets formed.

    You were almost right about this movie being a parody, Dawn. It's based on a very famous science fiction novel of the same name, written by Robert Heinlein and published in late 1959. The novel is a serious presentation of some of the author's political and military ideas at that time and was a huge hit for him. Director Paul Verhoeven recast the story as a satire of such beliefs, which may be why you found the dialog to be over the top. Loved your reaction!

    Fun reaction, as usual! I agree with you about the wonderful design and effects work -- a visual treat! So far as the film's message, yes, you largely missed it, so I hope you'll find this explanation helpful: The part of this film that younger reactors miss (the tonal stuff that confused you) is Verhoeven's satire of a fascistic future society (very prescient). The dialogue isn't "cheesy" or "cringe," necessarily, but satirical, at least in its intent. That's why the officers in this film look so much like Gestapo/SS officers, why corporal punishment is commonly applied to "Citizens" and "Civilians" alike, and it's also why the society's news/information spots are characterized by violence and propaganda. This society is so martial, you're not even considered a full "Citizen" unless you serve in the military (the military that invades other planets and attempts to wipe out the inhabitants, who are sentient, feel pain and fear, etc.).
    Westerners who came of age in the post-9/11 era have the disadvantage of being raised during a time when the West was increasingly embracing fascism, so this stuff looks more normal to them. That's why younger viewers don't always get the satire in this film. But to your credit, Dawn, on more than one occasion while reacting to this film, you demonstrated that you are capable of empathizing with the Other. In another generation or so, that kind of sensitivity will be even rarer in Western societies... if WW3 doesn't do us all in first.

    9:54 - "Is this other humans they're shooting, or is that aliens?" - It's just a training exercise using human-shaped figures as enemies. It was very likely created before humans encountered the bugs, so naturally, they'd use human figures as the enemy. Besides, it doesn't really matter what the enemies look like, the point is to shoot the enemy, and avoid being shot. The figures could be square blocks and would serve the same purpose.
    11:33 - "Well I hope that wasn't important." - Every reactor says that. :)
    26:23 - "Imagine being able to shoot a meteor out your butt." - The bugs don't shoot meteors out of their buts. They shoot blue plasma, and that knocks meteors out of the asteroid belt. The rocks are already in space, the bugs just give them a push.
    30:06 - "I feel bad for it. Why?" - Because humans are the aggressors. Human colonists encroached on the bugs' territory, and the bugs wiped out the invaders. This lead to war, and humans thinking that they have the right to commit genocide simply because they consider themselves superior to the bugs.
    30:13 - "It's like a computer game I'm watching." - Actually, there are a couple games based on this. One is a real time strategy game with an isometric view, and then there's a first person shooter, where you can play one of the soldiers on the ground, facing off against hoards of bugs.
    30:25 - "OK, so I just checked when the credits were rolling, that Michael Ironside is the guy that looks like Jack Nicholson." - This is one of the rare times when he doesn't play a bad guy. Probably 90% of his movie roles have been bad guys.
    There are a couple live action sequels to this. Casper Van Dien returns in the third movie to reprise his role as Rico.

      A very off the mark satire. I mean even within the world of the movie we see a lot of societal features that are not fascist at all. Such as amazingly transparent media (going so far as to show gory bodies on the battlefield) and Rico’s antiwar parents living in such a lavish home instead of going to political prison

      @@ProtossWannabe1984 »The characters of Starship Troopers, he [Verhoeven] said, were "fascists who aren't aware of their fascism". He said: "If I tell the world that a right-wing, fascist way of doing things doesn't work, no one will listen to me. So I'm going to make a perfect fascist world: everyone is beautiful, everything is shiny, everything has big guns and fancy ships but it's only good for killing fucking Bugs!"»
      The media supposedly was inspired by the nazi propaganda film Triumph des Willens. There's a lot of nazi/fascism symbolism in the movie, and the movie is meant to be opposed to fascism.
      Heinlein and his novel (long time since I read it) I think is more leaning towards a sort of libertarianism, and Heinlein espoused responsibility as the basis of citizenship in many of his novels..

The typical Hollywood left is pretty hard left, and they like to call the right "fascist" because the right is more nationalistic; But fascism is authoritarian nationalism (if I'm somewhat oversimplifying), and the hard left is arguably more authoritarian. No, neither of these groups are really fascist, people just fanatically want to paint their opposition as monsters. This was an amazing film to see for the first time at the cinema in 1997. So over the top yet it takes you with it and you're flung around like a rag doll on a fairground ride from start to finish. Every "why" you asked about the film was intentional including the cheesy dialogue and the incredibly beautiful looking "stars". We also got "Fifth Element" in 1997 - another incredibly beautiful sci-fi film on the big screen - oh and we also got "Batman & Robin" that year 😕
    "Starship Troopers" did cause some controversy at the time as it was rated a 15 by the BBFC. The amount of gore, beheadings and limb removing was deemed as you said as cartoon like and not gratuitous enough to warrant concern. The subsequent outrage meant the BBFC re-classified it as 18 for home video releases.
