  • Cycles of generational poverty are hard to break. Many low-income youth in Grand Rapids, Michigan, grow up without their parents present-not because parents have left the family but because the long hours they work to provide for their children keeps them away from home. These youth are more likely to struggle in school and even drop out.
That’s why the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation (GRCCT) has designed a suite of programs to serve youth ages 14-18, providing a holistic approach to career development. Here, youth can earn their GED and learn skills in construction or customer service in a highly supportive, collaborative environment.
“We see youth as future leaders in the community,” says Crystal Houston, GRCCT’s director. “When you change the trajectory of a youth’s life, you can change the trajectory of their family. That’s really the goal of the Center-economic mobility for this community. We want to see a thriving city for all.”
